Now we all know that the Houston Astros will be heading over to the American. The first team to switch leagues this side of the millennium. The Milwaukee Brewers did it in 1998 when the Tampa Bay Rays & Arizona Diamondbacks joined the MLB. Despite the new designs being leaked, owner Jim Crane, still went on with the unveiling of the new uniforms this Friday night at Minute Maid Park. With a stage near the base path, guard rails lined to and surrounding the pitchers mound and tunneling towards the dugout. The 5000 fans anxiously waited, Crane, GM Jeff Luhnow and new manager Bo Porter spoke to the crowd and then played a short teaser video on the center field screen. Justin Maxwell OF and All Star Jose Altuve 2B climbed out of the dugout sporting the new white home jerseys with orange lettering. After posing at the mound and doing a little handshake, they took to the stage as Lucas Harrell SP and prospect Jared Cosart wearing the alternate orange jersey with blue lettering gave the Japanese bow at the mound. #1 2012 overall draft pick Carlos Correa & first round draft pick George Springer strolled up to the mound, without skipping a beat gave each other a pound and straight to the stage in the traditional grey uniforms with blue lettering. Now what everyone has been waiting for as P Jordan Lyles and C Johnathan Singleton gave the old body building pose wearing the batting practice jersey that will be worn on select home games and Sundays. And then a special news story broke inside Minute Park about NASA retrieving something that crashes and was on its way to the stadium. The video was followed up by the return of the Astros mascot Orbit!

To be honest when I first saw pics of the jerseys, I didn’t think too much of them. So I jumped on Bing to search articles on the unveiling and for every search that’s earning me Microsoft points and other things email me about it. Anyways, I was shocked to discover that even though I was searching for Houston area newspapers, no one really covered this event at all. It was not even an after thought. There has to be a writer that covers the team that was there. I could only find two real articles on it. One from of course the Associated Press and another from Brian McTaggar, reporter for MLB.com. Really one Article some of the local papers websites either had the AP story or just a little snippet. Whatever. I learned from these two articles that Owner Jim Crane spent time and research to find out what the fans liked and going back to its inception style in the 60’s through the rainbow jersey introduced in 1975. Understanding why they chose these jerseys makes me appreciate them much more. Of course I have to throw in what I would have done, I would have tried to incorporate a pinstripe on the Home jerseys but, I’d still choose the tribute to the rainbow jersey over all.

I hope the Astros all the luck in the AL West in 2013. Its going to be a tough division to compete it and I think it’s going to make it exciting again for baseball fans in Houston. The biggest change next to the uniforms is the DH. As I say it the first name that pops into my head is Mike Napoli. Not only can he DH but also play 1B, C and I’m sure if needed 3B also. He’s a for average hitter but spending the last 6 years playing on the two of the Wests best teams the Rangers $ Angels, that experience of playing in the AL and in the West would add on the field and in the locker room. The Astros have reportedly been in talks with Lance Berkman. Will 50 year old Roger Clemens have what it takes to pitch again. As much as I look forward to next season, I’m looking forward to the off season, mainly the December meetings. Can’t wait!

I’ve been on vacation from my regular job and I thought I might be able to get a few blogs written, but as you know that didn’t happen for one reason or another. I think my biggest issue may have been that I just couldn’t pick one topic to write about; so I’m going to try to work some of it out with this post. Please bare with me.

Baseball ended kind of abruptly for me as I didn’t see San Francisco sweeping Detroit in the World Series. I thought for sure we would’ve had a fifth or sixth game in the series, but no. When Dan the man and I first started the show (Sports Time Radio) we made picks for the American and National league and I actually picked the Giants to win it all. I’m pretty sure that’s the first time in my life I’ve ever picked something like that correct. Of course my other pick was the Angels and that didn’t work out to well. Even with as long as the baseball season is I always miss it and look forward to spring training.

It’s football season for sure now; both college and pro. It’s unbelievable just how many college football games are on television. I have a basic Comcast package set up for my television viewing and I think on any given Saturday I can find up too 29 college football games on. It can be tough to keep up with just one or two of these games, but to try to follow them all would be crazy. I’m sure there are some people who can do it, but I’m not one of them. I’ve always been a fan of Notre Dame; so it’s nice to see them back in the national title picture. I wish I could get as many pro games on a Sunday as I do college games, but I don’t even get the Thursday night NFL games.

The NBA season kicked off this week and I;m trying to get back into basketball. I lost a lot of interest in the pro game when it started to be a lot of isolation plays and mostly dunks. For a while I was wondering if I would every see a guy take a jump shot that wasn’t a three pointer. I even got myself involved in a fantasy league to try to help my interest in the game. I had a chance to watch some extra games this week as I have the NBA Pass free preview. It’s nice to look around and see the other teams play. I actually watched James Harden’s debut as a Houston Rocket. I think my toughest part about watching an NBA game is you really just need to see the 4th quarter. I am improving on watching games; so will see how it goes the rest of the season. There are enough NBA games on regular television that I should be able to watch quite a few.

It should also be hockey season right now, but the NHL is still in a lock out. I’ll be very surprised if we have an NHL season this year; which is sad. I thought when the owners made their last offer at 50/50 we’d be close to seeing hockey again, but the players didn’t like the offer. I don’t know what all of the issues are, but I know splitting the revenue is one of the bigger ones. I guess the biggest thing for me is I miss hockey and I’d like them to settle this.

Thanks for putting up with my rambling. You can follow me on Twitter @Burketime

I’m sure ill hear comments about the title of my new blog but I don’t care and besides isn’t that what they turn into, To those of us who save their ticket stubs from the games we’ve gone too. If I do nothing all spring or summer, I always find a way to make it to a baseball game. Whether its to Wrigley Field or any park, my goal of course is to visit every park in the country but no the Yankees stadium is not the first on my list especially since they tore down “the house that Babe built.” And I’d rather go anywhere than stay in the south side of Chicago. Anyways….I hope you like my new series and maybe you’ll be inspired to reminisce with myself and Big Jack on Sports Time Radio or send me your story and ill blog about it.

Now this first visit to the friendly confines was from this year, which isn’t much for reminiscing about the old days or anything like that but it holds some significance and hopefully we can a look back and say i remember when…..It’s April 2012 and the MLB just stepped on the mound and all March I kept telling Big Jack, how I wasn’t going to to any Cubs games because our savior Theo and his team hadn’t done anything to draw me to pay for tickets. But he knows me well enough that there are some things I just cannot resist and spending 3 hours on a gloomy April Sunday, sitting outside on the North side of Chicago, where you never know If there will be clear skies or violent storms. I wake up extra early or was it that I couldn’t sleep or am I just adding this line for a dramatic effect? Either way, the night before, I print up the tickets and place them on the black granite kitchen counter tops by the back door with my keys on top. My promotional Cubs drawstring back pack…the small kind that usually girls in high school track use….from a bank that is no longer in business has 2 Officially licensed Cubs Poncho’s (I know what your thinking), a pair of Cubs Gloves Scarf and Skullcap, old ticket stubs and a bag of peanuts inside it. I of course double check it before we leave. I put the tickets in there, Lock the door and were gone. Every time we go, my wife loves to wait until we are somewhere on Lake Shore Drive, to give me that nervous look and say, ” Did you grab the tickets???” As my eyes begin to pop out of their sockets, all I can blurt out is, “The Bag” I swear she does this every time. I exit Belmont, turn right on Inner Lake Shore, then a left on Addison and the anticipation begins to stir in my stomach. Apartment buildings, stop signs, the Shell on the left corner. You can see the L tracks, the parking lot I used to park at until the old Mexican guy sold it, across from him is the new parking garage that is also used for the new police station. We’re walking up to the Addison Red Line stop All you hear is “TICKETS, WHO NEEDS TICKETS; PEANUTS, CHEAPER OUTSIDE THE PARK….” The only time I walk fast, I’d run but you know, I hand my wife her ticket and don’t even look back, I’m in the bag check line, my tickets scanned and I’m wishing I could have made to the second game so that I got my 2012 Cubs Magnet Schedule…it never gets old. A deep breath to take it all in….and to our seats section 220-1Row 2, now this is where knowing the stadium comes into play. When looking for tickets, I’m not only looking for the best deal but also location, kind of like buying a house. I’ve sat in just about every section at Wrigley to know what gives you the bet view and pretty much anything behind home plate makes for a great view. Not to mention sitting in the terrace reserved can be beneficial when bad weather ones about. The terrace is covered by the upper deck blocking out the sun and rain but can be a little cooler so dress warm with no sun, especially being in the second row. You’d be surprised but sitting in the middle of a section is going to keep you much warmer. Now the second row brings you much closer to the field but also to the stairs that lead to the concourse. I don’t like to do awhile lot of walking up & down stairs but you always pay for convenience. After grabbing some ood drinks and my personal favorite that I do not ever share, A Super Rope, buy it at the stand & not from the guy walking around.

Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012, opening weekend for the Chicago Cubs, looking to not be swept by the future NL East Champions. Stepping to the mound for his first Major League start since 2010, the 6’5″ 225lb, Notre Dame alum and the man the Cubs plan to build the team around, Jeff Smardzija. First up Ian Desmond with a double to Soriano simmering down the excitement of the fans but not putting any hopes down at all on my first look at Jeff. With Danny Espinoza and Ryan Zimmerman flying out and Adam LaRoche striking out. We head to the bottom of the first, Jodan Zimmerman takes to the rubber and David DeJesus, Darwin Barney and Starlin Castro, 1-2-3. This pitching duel continues into the bottom of the 3rd when Catcher Steve Clevenger singles to Former Cub, Xavier Nady in left, with Jeff’s first at bat, it’s traditional situational NL ball with the advancement of the runner to 2cd on a sac bunt, but DeJesus lines out to 2cd. The very next inning, Castro singles to center, then steals 2cd base and moves over to 3rd on a pass ball then scores on Alfonso Soriano’s sac fly, sending a wave of cheers throughout the friendly confines and just like that the Cubs take the lead but in the fifth aren’t able to get Bryan LaHair home after his double. Jeff continues to shutdown the Nats until the top of 6 when Wilson Ramos (C) singles to center then moves to second on J. Zimmerman’s sac bunt. After Desmond’s single moves Ramos over to 3rd, Espinosa gets a Sac Fly RBI and were all tied up. But the Cubs answer that run in the bottom half of the inning after Barney’s first double and is moved over to 3rd on a fly out by Castro, Soriano singles to left to score Barney and take the lead 2-1. To lead off the bottom of the 7th LaHair hits his second double of the day but yet again does not cross the plate.
With 7 innings pitched, 6 hits and 1ER Zimmerman is replaced by Ryan Matheus to walk DeJesus but gets Barney to fly out. Then Castro steps up to the plate and sends a rocket to left field scoring David and sending the stadium into a frenzy. Castro then steals 3rd and the Nats decide to walk Soriano then bring in Sean Burnett to finish the inning but he allows a single to center by Ian Stewart, scoring Castro, Wrigley Feild is going nuts and the Cubs are up 4-1 and its looks like they will get their first W of the season.

It’s the top of the 9th with one out to go, Ryan Zimmerman steps up to the plate the final potential out, Ground ball to Short but Ryan reaches on a fielding error by Starlin. Just one more out to go Smardzija has pitched 8 2/3 innings with 4 hits and 1ER, when Adam LaRoche steps to the plate and Home Run to right field and the Nats are down by 1 point and can tie this game up. Dale Sveum walks to the mound to relieve Jeff and bring in the unpredictable Cubs Closer Carlos Marmol. In true Marmol fashion, keeping all Cubs Fans on the edge of their seat walks Jayson Werth. With one out to go, one man on Nady fouls out to Stewart to end the game and allowing the Cubs to raise that W flag for all of Wrigleyville to see.
There’s nothing better than going to a Cubs game and watching them Win and being able to stay as the players take to the clubhouse and sing Steve Goodmans, “Go Cubs Go” with upwards to 40000 people. It’s an experience and that’s what it comes down to, it’s all about experience the team live, Your favorite team, hell any team for that matter. Now this was the Cubs first victory and on my drive home all I could think about was how i knew the start of SportsTime Radio was going to be a winner. Easter, an odd day to debut a sports talk show, but the Big Jack and I couldn’t think of a better day to start our show, it coincided with our favorite sport and that W by the Cubbies just boosted my confidence that day but allows the Big Jack and I do what we are passionate about..hearing ourselves speak! We love bringing our opinion into the sports world and having a platform to do it on. And we get to talk about what we want not just the ” Hot Topic” of the day. For the both of us I thank everyone for the support. Please continue to listen to us and spreading our blogs to your friends.

Side note: sometime during the game, my wife shows me a picture of us, my cousin found us and had a powerful lens and sent us the pic. Nothing like spending Easter Sunday with the fam at a baseball game, well they’re Greek Orthodox, so their Easter was on a different Sunday and they chose that day because after the game, you were able to have your kids run on the field. My wife and I thought about staying…..and then we saw the line. My cousin said her kids had fun but that I would have been just like her husband, more excited than the kids and wanted to run the bases himself. I thought about telling her, No I wouldn’t, but we both know its not true. We’ve gone the last two years on Easter and maybe I’ll have to go next Easter???

@Mantime8

In an interview earlier this season Dodgers President Stan Kasten said that the Dodger fans need to see something now as opposed to any 5 year plan for a team. He didn’t say any names but immediately Theo comes to mind. Which he has completed Year 1 of his 5 year plan. Being a life long fan of the Cubs, Theo’s 5 year plan to me means; don’t expect your Cubbies to be a contending team for the next couple years. While I will probably still go to a couple games, I know that I have to find a new team to cheer for in 2013 and what’s better than throwing on Dodger Blue. It’s very close to Cubbie Blue, plus I have never seen the Cubs beat the Dodgers Live. What that has to do with it Nothing but check out my later blogs when I take you back in time through my ticket stubs.
But back to the Dodgers, we all know they have new ownership that includes Magic Johnson, who by all means is Mr LA and wants winning teams in the city of angels. Also, the Dodgers have an exclusive tv deal with Fox and what’s seeming to be a bottomless purse of money!!! Will the Dodgers go all the way to the end. I think they have a huge shot at winning it all in 2013 but there’s a few questionable spots and pitchers possibly out for some or all of 2013. Lets take a look at the tentative 2013 depth chart according to me.

Catcher AJ Ellis -2012, Matt Treanor-2013
1B. Adrian Gonzalez – 2018
2B. Mark Ellis – 2014
3B. Nick Punto/Juan Uribe -2013???
SS. Hanley Ramirez – 2014
RF. Andre Either – 2018
CF. Matt Kemp – 2019
LF. Carl Crawford – 2017

AJ Ellis was drafted by the Dodgers in 2003 but it wasn’t until last year that he seen 133 games behind the plate. His numbers at the plate are still low but he’s great behind the plate defensively. He’s spent his whole career with the Dodgers, but should be be their starter or do the Dodgers look for veteran experience from AJ Pierzynski or Brian McCann.

Adrian Gonzalez back on the west coast. In 5 years for the Padres He averaged about .288 and hit 161 home runs. Moving to the other side of the country didn’t hurt this man at all as for the 2011 season he hit .338 with 27 hrs, 117 RBIs and 108 runs. However, the issues that were going on in the Sox Nation, may have been the cause for his departure. He moved to a team by all means should have been in the playoffs in 2011 & 2012 but we all seen what happened. Barring any injury, he’s going to comeback in 2013 and make that ball fly again out west especially when he returns to his former home at Petco Park. I also see him winning his third gold glove being back in the NL is going to be great for him.

Mark Ellis isn’t going to put up huge numbers but he can be very effective on when on base to be driven in home. But what he lacks at the plate he makes up for in the field. He’s spent most of his career at 2cd Base and will be another piece to the Dodger Puzzle.

Juan Uribe at 3rd base this next season seems highly unlikely. His contract is up in 2013 but will we even see him in the Majors.

Nick Punto, another guy that came over from Boston. He’s spent the last ten years playing the entire field but since 2007 has had barely 100 starts at 3B. Is the guy they are looking for at third. I don’t think that’s the direction they’ll go but keeping him is a must because he can play any position. But if he isn’t the starter then who?? Kevin Youkilis and David Wright are free agents. Both of these guys were their leagues Rookie of the Year in 2004. Defensively, you can’t go wrong with either guy. At the plate these two are very similar both average up to .300 each year. Your going to get 75-100 plus RBIs but your also looking at least 100 Ks from each. Wright is a 6x All Star and Youk’s been there 3x.

Hanley Ramirez played well in MIA until his injury in 2011 and being the star of the show Until Ozzie showed up and the Marlins upper management took the light off him focused it all on Ozzie and Reyes, left a sour taste in his mouth. But after moving back to shortstop in LA he started to have a resurgence. Look for a refreshed Han-Ram next season.

Matt Kemp and Andre Either do I really need to say anything. These two guys are franchise players and as long as Kemps’ hamstring is okay and Either stays healthy Both of these guys are going to do what they do best play Ball.

Carl Crawford will he be a liability or an asset. Injuries have plagued him since be arrived in Boston. Who knows maybe the warmer climate will bring him back to top shape or hell be the Alfonso Soriano of the Dodgers. A healthy Crawford is going to give a .300 batting average while stretching out those base hits into doubles and triples setting the guys behind him for RBIs.

The Dodgers bench would have Dee Gordan, Nick Punto, Luis Cruz, Juan Rivera and Jerry Hairston Jr if he is healthy along with back up catcher Matt Trenor.

Now the mound!!! Probably one of the most uncertain rotation in 2013. Who will be the Ace? Who will still be pitching and who are they looking at in the off season?

1. Clayton Kershaw as I’m writing this. I just confirmed that he will not have hip surgery this offseason. So the Dodgers Ace will be back at in 2013.
2. Chris Capuano-2014 Pitched for average in 2012. Which I believe will keep him in the rotation but being up for free agency. I feel that if he and Aaron aren’t improving in the 2013 season it’s possible that they could be shipped out by the trade deadline of next season.
3. Aaron Hrang-2014 In Dodger Blue he pitched for average which could keep him in the rotation in the 3,4 or 5 spot.
4. Josh Beckett-2014 he was once a 20 game winner but that was also in 2007. Going 2-3 in 7 starts for LA wasn’t impressive at all and neither was the end of his time in Boston. I am not going to blame the chicken & beer incident on his downfall. If they are unable to move him somewhere else-Would the Pen be a place for him. Until we see Crawford. I think the weakest link in the Infamous LA-Boston Deal is Beckett.
5. Chad Billingsley-2015 Still hasn’t been confirmed if he will undergo Tommy John surgery or not. It is reported that the decision will not be made until November or so which would make it in time for the winter meetings because if he has surgery. He will miss the 2013 season.
6. Ted Lilly-2013 after having surgery on his left shoulder. It is possible that he could be ready by spring training.

This off season we will see Zack Grienke and Ryan Dempster in the free agent market and with what it would seem as endless bank account, the Dodgers could pay for both if they wanted. But with the anxiety issues Zack has, is it even possibility of him being in one of the largest markets in the country. Dempster didn’t prove to be all that valuable to the Rangers but NL pitchers switching over to the AL never seem to transition all that well. Plus the Dodgers seemed very interested in him in 2012 but they obviously weren’t willing to give up any prospects for a rent a player.

Jake Peavy has a 22 million option that no one expects the White Sox to pick up. The question isn’t really can they afford it but is he worth it. Will he offer them a discount? Who knows but going back to the west could be good for him.

The bullpen seems pretty solid but they really need a solid closer for the 2013 season. Now my predictions are just that, what I think, but it’s going to make for a real exciting off season. I will be glued to the tv during the December meetings to wait to see what deals will be made. Will the Dodgers be the big talk in December or will another team surprise us. Either way as of now and most likely at the start of the season I will be riding the Dodger train. Who’s with me?

Wooooooowww. Whether you love it or hate, It’s here The one game wild card to advance to the division series. Being that I pegged the Rangers to win the World Series. Third times a charm. 40 years with no World Series Trophy. I really thought this would be the year even with the slump at the end of the season but the A’s really surprised me as I’m sure every one who loves baseball. Sweeping the Rangers to knock them out of first place in the west. The Rangers held that spot for 176 days straight. Even though I was rooting for Wash to do it, I still like the one game playoff. It definitely adds an element of surprise and makes the last couple weeks more exciting. Of course I can’t say the same for the teams that were knocked out. Under previous rules the Rangers and Braves would own the wild card spot but it didn’t work out that way. The Orioles played a better game as did the Cardinals. Now I can say I was really surprised that the O’s knocked the Rangers out but that’s how it is. How cool would it have been for the Braves to make it to the World Series in Chipper Jones’ last season. I would have loved to have seen that but sadly last year Bobby Cox announced his retirement and this Chipper his and oddly the Cardinals knocked them out two years in a row. Down in the STL it seems to have been a pretty smooth transition year without LaRussa and Pujols but well see tonight when they host the Giants.
Now the incident that caused the Braves fans to toss garbage onto the field after the in my opinion the wrong call was made on the infield fly rule. The announcers were really upset and “this is uncalled for …blah blah blah” It may have been Big Jack didn’t really care for it. But I say let them throw garbage on the field. I’m assuming those tickets were Atleast $75 or more and they paid to see their team win not lose and they were frustrated by how the Braves were playing and when it comes down to it in the 8th every single play & call counts. Do I blame them losing the game on the ump, Chipper caused an error went 1-5 and the opportunity came up for the Braves in the 8th & 9th innings. They didn’t score the points they needed to win. With out this bad call they might have scored one point in the eighth but you never know with momentum they could have taken that game and be hosting the Giants tonight. But they’re not. Just like the infamous Bartman incident in Chicago which caused the Cubs to be knocked out of the playoffs. Everyone remembers that but forgets that the very next play would have ended the game but the ball went under Alex Gonzalezs legs at shortstop and that was it.
MLB may take a look at this rule in the offseason or not.

I have no idea who to pick for the World Series. I don’t think I’ve ever picked a winner and the possibilities. We can witness another Bay Area World Series. The Beltway series at the Big Show for the first time. The Centrals Cardinals Reds and Tigers can’t be counted out. Lets not forget about the Yankees Jeter A-Rod, Granderson, Cano.
But its been the year if the pitcher and after Sabathia & Hughes can the Yankees hold on after they pitch. The possibilities…..I’d like to see the Nats make it but I’m very partial to the Giants. I grew up a fan of Ricky Henderson, loved watching the A’s but it would be cool to see the O’s. I’d love to see the Tigers win it all just to throw it in White Sox fans faces. Sorry guys. Nobody roots for the Yankees but they have a great team. And since the Reds and Cards are in the Cubs division I can’t really get behind them.

I’ll throw these two teams out there Nationals vs Tigers. Well see next week.

20121005-135353.jpg

Friday, October 5 2012, sparks the new playoff system that the MLB has put forth for us all to enjoy. It’s exciting its made this last couple of weeks very interesting. There were more teams in the mix this year and it gave a shot to two more teams that would have just been watching the playoffs from home like the rest of us. I have no problem with this 1 game Wild Card. It really makes these four teams the Wild Card. However listening to some people on Chicago’s local ESPN radio, you would think that this 1 game was going to confuse every and anybody. They act like its such a foreign idea that isn’t going to work. “It’s like the game 7, but its only one game.” Well DUH!!!! I mean it doesn’t take a genius to be a talk show host on radio and definetly doesn’t take a genius to figure out how this 1 game wild card is going to win.
Let me break it down in case you were listening to these guys and were a little confused because of them. Each league has 2 Wild Card teams, that’s 4 teams. The Braves will face the Cardinals in a 1 game play-off for the right to face the Washington Nationals in the Division Series that will be the best out of 5. The Rangers and the Orioles will meet for the right to face the Yankees.
The new rule besides this 1 game playoff is that the wild card team will face the team in their respective leagues that has the best win loss record. In the past, in the division series two teams from the same division wouldn’t play each other in the division series. For example, under last years rules, the four AL teams Yanks, A’s, Tigers and Rangers all have playoff spots but since the A’s and Rangers are in the same division they wouldn’t play each other unless they both advanced to the Championship Series.

As you can see this new wild card game is not confusing or demoralizing or anything negative. If your afraid of change then this is probably too much for you to handle like a smart phone. But if your like me, your excited to watch tomorrows Wild Card games. The NL is at 4:00 and the AL is 7:30 pm central. Need more info go to MLB

I’ve been waiting to do this one for a while now, but here we go.

The American League Most Valuable Player is Miguel Cabrera. There should be no real doubt about this, Not only is he a triple crown winner the real bottom line to this is the Detroit Tigers don’t win the American League Central without Cabrera. I hope the people who vote on this don’t screw it up, but I have a feeling they will. Don’t hit me up with all the other stats to try to make the guy you wan to win sound better. The Tigers win because of Cabrera.

Second on my ballot is Mike Trout. Trout had a great season and will get a ton of votes and support for this award, but he doesn’t deserve to win it this season. I’ve heard all the stats that they try to work in because ESPN really wants to see Trout win this award. Again here’s the deal; Trout couldn’t get the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim into the playoffs. Trout looks like he has many years to try and win this award; just not this year.

It’s wide open for the rest of my ballot, but at number three I’m going with Fernando Rodney. Rodney was 2-2 with and e.r.a. of 0.60 with 48 saves; yes you read that right 0.60.He gave up 5 earned runs in 76 appearances. Tampa Bay contended all season and Rodney had a lot to do with keeping them in the pennat race; so he ends up on my ballot.

Adrian Beltre ends up fourth on my ballot. I know Josh Hamilton gets a lot of the attention in Texas, but Beltre was the guy who carried them though the summer months. He ended up with a .321 batting average, 36 home runs and 102 R.B.I.s. I’m interested to see how many voters where paying attention and put Beltre on their ballots.

Last, but not least for me on my ballot is Derek Jeter; yes you read that right I said Derek Jeter. He played in 159 games this season and hit .316; he;s te leader of the best team in the American League and they’ll be a tough out in the playoffs. I know there are other guys who I could drop in this spot and I lot of people who just don’t like the Yankees, but Jeter belongs on the M.V.P. ballot this season.

Now over to the National League.

Your National League Most Valuable Player is San Fransisco Giants Buster Posey. After the leg injury last season Posey put up a .336 batting average, 24 home runs and 103 R.B.I.s while catching the majority of the game for the Giants this season. The Giants do a nice job of finding Posey extra at bats as a first baseman. After the Giants went into first place they where able to pull away from the Dodgers and ended up winning the division by 8 games. Posey came up big for San Fransisco while they where building this lead and he’s the right choice here. I didn’t even mention he ended up winning the batting title this season as well.

Second on my ballot and so, so close to winning this award. Andrew McCutchen from the Pittsburgh Pirates. I believe that McCutchen is the best player in baseball right now; sorry Mike Trout fans. I think if Pittsburgh could’ve found their way into the playoffs this season McCutchen might have even won this award. McCutchen is one of the best defensive outfielders in baseball and ended up finishing behind Posey in the batting race. I think McCutchen will end up winning this award sooner rather than later.

Put Craig Kimbrel third on my ballot. 3-1 with a 1.01 e.r.a. 42 saves 116 strikeouts and just 14 walks in 62 and 2/3rds of an inning. He’s the anchor in the Braves bullpen and is lights out when it comes to closing games. He’s the biggest reason the Braves ended up with a wild card birth and if they can turn over a playoff lead to Kimbrel they have a great shot at moving on.

Another catcher ends up on my ballot in the fourth spot. Yader Molina lead the St. Louis Cardinals into playoffs and they wouldn’t be here without him. He’s the best defensive catcher in baseball and if he’s not the best handler of a pitching staff in baseball he’s right there. His offense has improve making him even more dangerous. A batting average over .300 (.315) and 22 home runs add a much-needed bat to the St. Louis offense. So you have to find a spot for Molina on your ballot/

I have to admit that I’m not all that happy about this, but I have to include Ryan Braun in the fifth spot on my ballot. He’s put up good numbers after winning the M.V.P. last season and beating a P.E.D. suspension on top of that. He was able to put up these numbers without Prince Fielder batting behind him this season. .319 batting average. 41 home runs and 112 R. B. I.’s this season. He can ever steal a base 30 this season.

There are my ten guys. I’d love to know your’s.

As I work through the awards for major league baseball this season, I found this category interesting with the way the pennant races are going this season. I’m starting in the National League and #1 on my ballot is Charlie Manuel the Philadelphia Philles manager. Now I know he won’t win this award but where this team was at the all-star break to where this team is right now, Manuel deserves to win this award. The Philles were written off by everyone and now all of a sudden they have an outside shot at grabbing one of the two wild card spots in the National League. Second on my ballot and the manager I actually think will win this award is Davey Johnson of the Washington Nationals. The Nationals are in first place right now and look like they’ll make the playoffs for the first time since moving to Washington. Washington has the best record in the National League right now and Johnson has done a great job of handling the young talent on that team. Third for me is Fredi Gonzalez of the Atlanta Braves. The Braves look like they’ll end up with one of the two national League wild card spots and are five games out of first place in the National League East. I’m going to give my fourth place spot to Dusty Baker of the Cincinnati Reds. I think a lot of people had the Reds as playoff contenders, but I’m not sure anyone had them winning the National League Central. The Reds have the biggest lead out of any division leader and have clinched a playoff spot. Just a quick side note, Baker went to the hospital in Chicago yesterday and was found to have an irregular heartbeat. He’s supposed to be back with the team tomorrow and I hope he recovers quickly. Last but not least, in my fifth position is Bud Black of the San Diego Padres. No one anywhere expected this team to do anything, but they actually have an outside shot at a wild card spot. I know they have too many teams to jump and it doesn’t look like they’ll get into the playoffs but the fact that their still hanging around is enough for me to make Black number five on my list.

Over to the American League and my winner of the Manager of the Year award is Buck Showalter of the Baltimore Orioles. There are some other guys that are close in this voting, but this is Showalter’s award. The Orioles appear to be headed to a playoff spot this season. They’ve won 15 straight extra inning games and countless one run games. Bob Melvin of the Oakland A’s lands in second place for me. The A’s where another team no one had contending for a playoff spot this season. It looks like they might hang on and get one and Melvin has a whole lot to do with that. I wouldn’t even be surprised to see Melvin jump Showalter and win this award. Three for me is Joe Girardi manager of the New York Yankees. I know you can look at the Yankees and you can always expect them to do well. Their pitching staff isn’t filled with great pitchers but Girardi has managed to keep the staff together and has the Yankees in first place. Coming in at number four is Ron Washington of the Texas Rangers. Washington almost seems overlooked but the Rangers have been the best team in the American League most of the season and have the best record right now to prove it. The Rangers don’t really have an ace on their staff but Washington has handled them well and this is why he’s on this list. The fifth place manager for me is Robin Ventura of the Chicago White Sox. People were shocked when he got the job in Chicago but with no managing experience, the White Sox are in first place right now. It’s a tight race in the American League Central, so we’ll see if the White Sox can hang on to the lead in their league. Even if they don’t, I still believe that Ventura belongs on this list.

Normally Big Jackand I talk about sports, so this may be a little off topic but still in the realm of sports. I do not like SnapBacks since I was a little kid playing little league. I wanted to wear the hat that Shawon Dunston or Rickey Henderson wore on the field. I am not too sure if they sold them when I was younger and I know SnapBacks have the advantage of being adjustable, so you don’t have to worry about shrinkage or or your head getting bigger. I didn’t care about that I wanted a fitted hat.

As far back as I can remember I have always loved wearing hats, so finding the right hat has always been a big deal. When I was in little league they gave you those lame Park District hats, so I convinced my parents to buy me the hat of the team I was on. It irritated coaches and other parents but I didn’t listen. I cannot say when but I was about 17 or so when I bought my first fitted hat and being a huge baseball fan, of course it was the Cubs, so I picked up and wore it for most of the season and tossed it because it shrank. It took a little while to find the right hat that fit my head and I landed on the New Era 5950. One of the first ones I bought that I really liked was this criss crossed logo had a Yankees and the Dodgers and of course my Cubs. The Yankees one for some reason or another shrunk over time along with the Cubs hat, but not the LA hat. It seemed that when I bought these hats. I was buying a new one every other year because of shrinkage and I do have a big head. And that got annoying plus the fact they only seemed to make MLB hats, so when it was time for football season, I was stuck buying the Reebok L/XL and the fitted hats just didn’t fit the same and with time took on an odd shape and shrunk. The 2011 NFL sideline caps looked so cool and I was excited when I had my very own, but of course that L/XL I told you about was just a little to tight on my huge head. Needless to say I was vey excited to see that New Era is the official sideline hat of the 2012 season but they had three different hats to choose. Too many choices! Eventually I’ll have them all. Even when I busted out my authentic Jordan, I was able to pick up a NBA New Era 5950 Chicago Bulls hat to match. Now I know I mention shrinkage, but the on-field caps protect against shrinkage. I’m not sure but I think they are using more of that technology in all their fitted hats. I purchase a Cubs 1984 logo hat 2 seasons ago and it still fits like a glove! I also have a SF Giants 2010 World Series fitted that still fits like new.

Did they pay to blog about them? No. I wish they did. On Air Mr Fantasy said a hats a hat to him but to me it’s more than a hat. It s apart of who I am, I love wearing fitted hats and I won’t stop until I’m gone. Since I’ve bought my first one the price has definitely has gone up but for the price You get great quality and for someone like myself who keeps them forever, the price is just right. Now all I need to do is learn how to clean them better.
