Mock Draft Round 2

Posted: July 29, 2013 by Sports Time Radio in Uncategorized

Round 1 is now complete and we saw running backs coming off the board at a fast pace.  I would not be surprised if you get into your draft and people late in the draft start to panic a little and even more running backs are taken.

Let’s break down how many players from each position were drafted

1)      RB-12

2)      WR-5

3)      QB-3

It is now time to start round two.  Remember this is reverse order.  We start with Team 20 and end with team 1.

Mock Draft Round 1

Sports Time Radio has asked me to help everyone prepare for the 2013 season of Fantasy Football. I am going to release each week a mock draft. Our mock draft will be a 20 team mock draft and is a PPR league. I will release rounds 1-5. Then based on what has transpired in preseason I will adjust my rankings and redraft each week.

Before I release this week’s mock draft I want to update everyone on key injuries that will affect your draft.

1) Jeremy Maclin – Out for 2013 season

2) Dennis Pita – Out for 2013 season

3) Percy Harvin – Looks like surgery but the time table is not clear. I think it will be significant part of the season. Monitor this closely. He currently has been taken off my board until I see he can play this year.

4) Ben Roethlisberger – Soreness on in his surgically repaired right knee. Nobody has called this a setback, but it is worth watching. He has not fallen on my board yet. He remains number 14 on my board of fantasy QBs.

Let’s start round 1

Round one is dominated by running backs. If you draft at the top of your draft the only decision you need to make is what running back you will take.

This is the deepest QB draft I can remember, so you can wait a little on this position. I do feel the top three QBs are worth taking in the middle to late first round.

Last year Calvin Johnson and Brandon Marshall scored as many points as the elite running backs did. These two wide receivers are worth taking in the top 10.

I will release round two on Monday 7/29.

It’s getting closer to the trading deadline in major league baseball. Right now the Chicago Cubs are the only team selling off some of their pitching. Scott Feldman went to Baltimore earlier in the season and just this week Matt Garza was traded to the Texas Rangers. There’s still a lot of talk about some pitchers. Jake Peavey of the Chicago White Sox has been talked about and lately so has Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee. Lee actually has been scratched from his start tonight (Saturday) because of a sore neck. Maybe the Phillies didn’t want him to make another start while they try to work out a trade. As I believe we’ve talked about on the show July 31st isn’t the end of trades for your favorite team. After July 31st a player has to go through waivers before he can be traded.

NFL training camps have opened and their’s been a lot of coverage from them. I saw some coverage from the New England Patriots camp and surprise, surprise they found a way to talk quite a bit about Tim Tebow. I guess this is to be expected because the major media can’t let Tebow go, but he’s a 3rd string quarterback. They all went wild when he caught a couple of passes from 2nd string quarterback Ryan Mallet yesterday. I haven’t quite figured out the fascination with Tebow, but the media loves him. On Friday’s show we talked about this and we’re wondering if it’s that he’s a safe story. We didn’t think Tebow would end up on the wrong side of the law and that’s why they like to talk about him. For a guy who probably won’t take a snap from the center all season Tebow makes quite a bit of news.

As we’ve discussed a few times there are quite a few fantasy football drafts that have already happened. I’d love to know what the guy who drafted Aaron Hernandez feels right now. What if you reached and took Percy Harvin early in your draft. There’s a chance Harvin may need hip surgery and it’s been reported he could miss anywhere from two (2) to four (4) months and some reports are saying he’d miss the entire season. Did you draft Geno Smith figuring he’d eventually beat out Mark Sanchez. Did you draft Michael Vick or Nick Foles or even reached farther for Matt Barkley; one of them will start for the Eagles this season. There will be more injuries between now and the season opener and these guys who drafted early are going to be looking back and shaking there heads over these draft picks. I enjoy fantasy football as much as the next guy, but there’s no chance I’d even get into a league with a draft that’s done this early. One (1) or two (2) bad injuries and your season is over before the kickoff of week 1.

I saw where a former employee at the Biogenesis clinic mentioned that there are more major league baseball players who received P.E.D’s from Anthony Bosch whose names haven’t come out yet. This former employee said there are players in all the other major sports and MMA that saw Anthony Bosch. You have to wonder how many more names might come out of this situation.

This is one of the tougher weeks for a sports fan. Early in the week it was just baseball. Sadly I’m not a fan of the home run hitting contest or the actual All Star game itself. I know it counts and all the other things that go along with it but I just can’t get through the entire game. What I did see, may have been the best tribute ever. Even though it was the 8th inning, once the bullpen door opened and Enter Sandman started playing, the greatest closer of all time Mariano Rivera entered the game. He had the entire field to himself as all the other players and coaches stayed in the dugout. He had a 1, 2, 3 inning and was the All – Star game Most Valuable Player (MVP). It was by far the highlight of the game by far.

More baseball. As the trading deadline nears which teams are going to make moves. A lot of talk locally here is where Matt Garza will end up. The Cubs would like to trade Garza before his next start. The Texas Rangers where the front-runner for a long time but today it’s being rumored the deal fell through. A lot of teams have been interested in Garza, so will see what kind of deal the Cubs can get. I guess my question is; why is it a trade deadline when you can actually make trades after the deadline? I guess you have to call it something but deadline sounds so final and then all of a sudden there are more trades. I’ve always wonder how these trades take shape. Sadly I doubt it’s nowhere near how my fantasy trades go. With the extra wildcard spot more teams are in the playoff race, so more teams are looking for players. This should make for an active trade market and we’ll see who ends up where and what they had to give up to get them.

The NHL schedule came out. It seems like the season just ended didn’t it? The Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks open their season October 1st against the Washington Capitals. They also have an outdoor game featured on their schedule this season. March 1st in Soldier Field against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It’s another one of those weeks for me. After the All Star break they come out with another free preview of the MLB Extra Innings package. So it’s baseball, baseball, baseball for me again this week. Does it get any better than this?

@Burketime

Listen to our show!

20130713-212355.jpg

After a week off to announce the Sports Time Radio All Stars, we’re back.

I’m a little disappointed that baseball hasn’t gotten more attention on the highlight shows. For whatever reason there seems to be a lot of NBA talk, even though Dwight Howard signed a week ago with the Houston Rockets. While I enjoy the NBA I don’t need to see more highlights from your summer league games than I do from an actual baseball that counts in the standings. I’ll take most of the blame for this as I don’t have the MLB network on my cable package. I guess if I want my baseball highlights I’ll have to breakdown and upgrade my cable package but like almost everyone else out their I’m not looking forward to spending the extra money.

Did you vote for the last spot on the All Star team? I always vote once and I cast my vote for Joaquin Benoit (Detroit Tigers) in the American League and Yasiel Puig (Los Angles Dodgers) in the National League. Out of the ten (10) guys that where on the ballot these where the two (2) players I wanted to see. Of course I didn’t get my wish as Steve Delabar (Toronto Blue Jays) & Freddie Freeman (Atlanta Braves) won the fan voting. The Toronto fans and the Atlanta fans teamed up to vote for each others players and I know there was some issue with this. Dan the Man pointed out on the show that the San Francisco Giants had a team they partnered with, but right now I’m drawing a blank on who that team was. It was a promotion to get you to vote for each others players. This isn’t a big an issue to me as it is to some experts; it’s the All Star game and you’re allowed to vote for whoever on the ballot you want to vote for.

Ilya Kovalchuk walked away from the NHL and a contract that would’ve paid him $77 million. Kovalchuk is from Russia and more or less just wanted to go home. He made $23 million on the contract before leaving and I’m guessing will play in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) next season. A lot of people have called Kovalchuk out for doing this but I don’t see an issue with this. If Kovalchuk wanted to go home and play hockey he should be allowed to be. The New Jersey Devils don’t have to pay off the contract and I don’t believe it will count against their salary cap. While the Devils have to replace Kovalchuk I think they would rather replace him than deal with an unhappy player.

Believe it or not NFL training camps are getting ready to open. I thought I heard the New Orleans Saints open training camp first on July 18th. These aren’t your father’s NFL training camps. With the new collective bargaining agreement teams can still have doubles; two (2) practices in the same day, but their only allowed to wear pads for one (1) of these practices. While I’m sure these practices are very, very tough I’d like to know how they compare to the older training camps? “Are you ready for some Football”

If you’ve listened to Sports Time Radio you know that we’re not a huge fan of the way the major league baseball All Star teams are selected. So I tried to have us put together our own All Star team. Dan the Man, Mr. Fantasy, Schaumburg Stu and I all made list of our All Stars. Here’s how we went about it. Each person ranked the top 3 players at 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, Shortstop and Catcher. We ranked 9 outfielders, 6 starting pitchers and 4 relievers. A player got 10 points for a 1st place vote. 8 points for a 2nd place vote. 6 points for a 3rd place vote and then 5 points, 4 points, 3 points, 2 points, 1 point and a half of a point for positions 4th through 9th. Here how are voting came out. The player’s point total is in parenthesis. Others getting votes will be listed.

So the NHL season came to an end this week with the Chicago Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup beating the Boston Bruins in Game 6, 3 – 2. It was one of the best comebacks I’ve ever seen in any type of sporting event. The Blackhawks scored two (2) goals very late in the 3rd period to win the game and the Stanley Cup. If you’re a regular listener to Sports Time Radio you know that Dan the Man and I both picked the Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup at the start of the season. Maybe it was a little bit of a homer pick, but it worked in our favor. They had the parade in Chicago yesterday and there have been reports that over 2 million people attended. This of course was covered by the Chicago media from every angle. The question Dan the Man and I had last night was there was full coverage on the radio. So, my question to you would be, is this good radio?

We have two (2) fantasy baseball leagues that Mr. Fantasy, Dan the Man and I play against each other in. We did a regular snake draft style league and then for the first time we did an auction draft. Our leagues differ from most though. We have 20 teams in our leagues and the outfield is position specific. One of the players in our regular league sent out a message saying he was looking for a centerfielder. I just happen to have three (3) players who qualify as centerfielders, so I thought maybe we could make a trade. I sent him an e-mail and asked him to make me an offer. His reply was that he’s not good at making offers and in return wanted me to come up with a trade. I sent him a two (2) for two (2) trade offer which he turned down, so I countered with a regular one (1) for one (1) trade. He rejected this trade offer as well and I’m running out of ideas for trades.

The NBA had their draft this week as well and with the #1 pick, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Anthony Bennett a forward from UNLV. This was a bit of a surprise pick as most experts had the Cavaliers taking Kentucky center Nerlens Noel. There was also some late talk about Maryland center Alex Len. In the end the Cavaliers selected Bennett as both Noel and Len slide down in the 1st round. As with any draft you never really know what you’re getting at the start, but most experts have been calling this a weak draft. We should start to find out about these draft picks as summer league will be starting very soon.

We tried something for picking the baseball all-star teams with Sports Time Radio. I actually have it totaled up and I’ll be posting it for you very soon.

New Era Summer Styles

20130627-003443.jpg

I ran over to New Era to find a pic of the All Star Hats that are supposed to be worn during the Home Run Derby to tweet to Big Jack. It’s Woven and 100% polyester. What really drew me to it was the colors. It reminded me of the old school Mets colors. I’m diggin’ this hat so much. I think I’m going to pick up a National League cap 7 5/8. It’s $35 but since I am an “insider,” it’s $28. One thing I know New Era makes the best caps and they are the only ones I will wear. As I was searching the site I came across several other styles out for the summer.

20130627-003530.jpg
The Hardwood Classics Camo were the first caps to grab my eye. They are woven with 70% wool & 30% cotton. The bill is in camouflage and the logo is a classic version. I like the classic logos but not a big fan of the camo only on the bill. Which leads us a to a great camo hat.

20130627-004303.jpg
This style is called YOTS. These hats make it difficult to chose between the All Star caps. I love classic logos. These are 70% wool and 30% polyurethane, woven. I really like the all camo but the black and white draws me. The Diamondbacks cap is just cool and how can you not like the Braves Old School logo.

20130627-005037.jpg
Youth two tone is woven, 20% wool, 80% polyester and is for sizes, 6 3/8 & 6 3/4. They are a cool for for the kids. If I had kids, I would definitely pick one up and hopefully to plant the seed of college.

20130627-005709.jpg
The MLB Splatted is woven, 30% polyester and 70% wool. I’m not super in love with this style. I do love the classic logos. The splatted bill looks great with some hats and not so great with other teams. I’m not saying I wouldn’t wear it, of course unless it was a White Sox cap. It has a low priority on my list but hey if say someone somewhere were to give one as a gift. I’d definitely wear it. Hey it’s worth a try.

20130627-010405.jpg
4th of July Stars & Stripes fitted hats are 100% polyester woven. I can only assume that these caps will be worn by all teams playing on the 4th of July. Many stadiums put on fantastic firework shows, so I can imagine it being a great day to go to a ball game.

If your wondering about New Era’s other styles, you’re going to have to go to their site. I only wear 59Fifty Fitted Cap, so I’m only going to talk about them. Hopefully the Dodgers get out of last place and Mr Fantasy buys me a new 59Fifty 75/8 fitted cap.
