Big Jack and I began Sports Time Radio on BlogTalk Radio at the open of the 2012 MLB season and it was only fitting that we predict who we thought is going to win the major titles. With the end of the season creeping on us, here is our picks:

Big Jack
NL Champ — San Francisco Giants
ALChamp — California (Anaheim) Angels *
AL MVP — Miguel Cabrera
NL MVP — Andrew McCutchen
AL Cy Young — Jarod Weaver
NL Cy Young — Roy Halladay

Daniel K.
NL Champ — Philadelphia Phillies
ALChamp — Texas Rangers *
AL MVP — Prince Fielder
NL MVP — Matt Kemp
AL Cy Young — C C Sabathia
NL Cy Young — Doc Hallady

Mr Fantasy
NL Champ — L A Dodgers
ALChamp — Texas Rangers
AL MVP — Ian Kinsler
NL MVP — Matt Kemp
AL Cy Young — Justin Verlander
NL Cy Young — Matt Cain

* World Series Winner

With looking at the numbers Sunday September 23, 2012, Big Jack & I agreed that Miguel Cabrera and Buster Posey should win their leagues MVP awards. We will definitely break down the 2013 season more in depth but I’ve gone record to say its the Dodgers year in 2013 but we’ll discuss that later.

As I work through the awards for major league baseball this season, I found this category interesting with the way the pennant races are going this season. I’m starting in the National League and #1 on my ballot is Charlie Manuel the Philadelphia Philles manager. Now I know he won’t win this award but where this team was at the all-star break to where this team is right now, Manuel deserves to win this award. The Philles were written off by everyone and now all of a sudden they have an outside shot at grabbing one of the two wild card spots in the National League. Second on my ballot and the manager I actually think will win this award is Davey Johnson of the Washington Nationals. The Nationals are in first place right now and look like they’ll make the playoffs for the first time since moving to Washington. Washington has the best record in the National League right now and Johnson has done a great job of handling the young talent on that team. Third for me is Fredi Gonzalez of the Atlanta Braves. The Braves look like they’ll end up with one of the two national League wild card spots and are five games out of first place in the National League East. I’m going to give my fourth place spot to Dusty Baker of the Cincinnati Reds. I think a lot of people had the Reds as playoff contenders, but I’m not sure anyone had them winning the National League Central. The Reds have the biggest lead out of any division leader and have clinched a playoff spot. Just a quick side note, Baker went to the hospital in Chicago yesterday and was found to have an irregular heartbeat. He’s supposed to be back with the team tomorrow and I hope he recovers quickly. Last but not least, in my fifth position is Bud Black of the San Diego Padres. No one anywhere expected this team to do anything, but they actually have an outside shot at a wild card spot. I know they have too many teams to jump and it doesn’t look like they’ll get into the playoffs but the fact that their still hanging around is enough for me to make Black number five on my list.

Over to the American League and my winner of the Manager of the Year award is Buck Showalter of the Baltimore Orioles. There are some other guys that are close in this voting, but this is Showalter’s award. The Orioles appear to be headed to a playoff spot this season. They’ve won 15 straight extra inning games and countless one run games. Bob Melvin of the Oakland A’s lands in second place for me. The A’s where another team no one had contending for a playoff spot this season. It looks like they might hang on and get one and Melvin has a whole lot to do with that. I wouldn’t even be surprised to see Melvin jump Showalter and win this award. Three for me is Joe Girardi manager of the New York Yankees. I know you can look at the Yankees and you can always expect them to do well. Their pitching staff isn’t filled with great pitchers but Girardi has managed to keep the staff together and has the Yankees in first place. Coming in at number four is Ron Washington of the Texas Rangers. Washington almost seems overlooked but the Rangers have been the best team in the American League most of the season and have the best record right now to prove it. The Rangers don’t really have an ace on their staff but Washington has handled them well and this is why he’s on this list. The fifth place manager for me is Robin Ventura of the Chicago White Sox. People were shocked when he got the job in Chicago but with no managing experience, the White Sox are in first place right now. It’s a tight race in the American League Central, so we’ll see if the White Sox can hang on to the lead in their league. Even if they don’t, I still believe that Ventura belongs on this list.

Reggie Bush

The NFL is wrapping up the second week of football and in this second week I was able to crush my opponent and pull out my first win of the season. This is my first time ever doing a fantasy league. I can say its probably easiest to start with football because of the schedule. I joined Mr. Fantasy and Big Jack’s Yahoo league. It is free to join and it has a companion app for droid or apple. I’m an apple guy So you know I have the app on my iPad and iPhone. It definitely makes it easier than running to check everything on the pc(no Mac yet). I also downloaded Bleacher Report and Rotowire.
My first week was a bust but I was able to come back strong in the second week and not even give my opponent a chance. This fantasy thing is very similar to gambling I would say, it’s all about luck and timing. This week I had a couple guys get hurt and I was able to fill those positions and gain huge points like my TE from the Jets Dustin Kellar was out and I was able to replace by thursday or so with SD’s Dante Rosario. I took a chance on him because he was questionable but it worked out with him scoring 3td’s and giving me 26.55 points. Now I lost on WAS Pierre Garçon and the three WRs I had barely scored 15 points combined but Good ole Reggie Bush was the man Sunday scoring me over 40 points. I felt that when I chose him, he was on a New team, The Heismann trophy situation was over along with the Kardishian BS. Hopefully he continues to score like he did this Sunday.
When I first heard of fantasy I just thought there was way to much time involved to do it or it would be to complicated but with modern technology and the NFL having really one day of games, it’s pretty easy and it makes that other game after the Bears game more exciting along with the national game. Depending on how well I do this year, maybe I’ll do a money league but then again I don’t want to push my luck. Until next week or whenever I decide to blog again.

Normally Big Jackand I talk about sports, so this may be a little off topic but still in the realm of sports. I do not like SnapBacks since I was a little kid playing little league. I wanted to wear the hat that Shawon Dunston or Rickey Henderson wore on the field. I am not too sure if they sold them when I was younger and I know SnapBacks have the advantage of being adjustable, so you don’t have to worry about shrinkage or or your head getting bigger. I didn’t care about that I wanted a fitted hat.

As far back as I can remember I have always loved wearing hats, so finding the right hat has always been a big deal. When I was in little league they gave you those lame Park District hats, so I convinced my parents to buy me the hat of the team I was on. It irritated coaches and other parents but I didn’t listen. I cannot say when but I was about 17 or so when I bought my first fitted hat and being a huge baseball fan, of course it was the Cubs, so I picked up and wore it for most of the season and tossed it because it shrank. It took a little while to find the right hat that fit my head and I landed on the New Era 5950. One of the first ones I bought that I really liked was this criss crossed logo had a Yankees and the Dodgers and of course my Cubs. The Yankees one for some reason or another shrunk over time along with the Cubs hat, but not the LA hat. It seemed that when I bought these hats. I was buying a new one every other year because of shrinkage and I do have a big head. And that got annoying plus the fact they only seemed to make MLB hats, so when it was time for football season, I was stuck buying the Reebok L/XL and the fitted hats just didn’t fit the same and with time took on an odd shape and shrunk. The 2011 NFL sideline caps looked so cool and I was excited when I had my very own, but of course that L/XL I told you about was just a little to tight on my huge head. Needless to say I was vey excited to see that New Era is the official sideline hat of the 2012 season but they had three different hats to choose. Too many choices! Eventually I’ll have them all. Even when I busted out my authentic Jordan, I was able to pick up a NBA New Era 5950 Chicago Bulls hat to match. Now I know I mention shrinkage, but the on-field caps protect against shrinkage. I’m not sure but I think they are using more of that technology in all their fitted hats. I purchase a Cubs 1984 logo hat 2 seasons ago and it still fits like a glove! I also have a SF Giants 2010 World Series fitted that still fits like new.

Did they pay to blog about them? No. I wish they did. On Air Mr Fantasy said a hats a hat to him but to me it’s more than a hat. It s apart of who I am, I love wearing fitted hats and I won’t stop until I’m gone. Since I’ve bought my first one the price has definitely has gone up but for the price You get great quality and for someone like myself who keeps them forever, the price is just right. Now all I need to do is learn how to clean them better.

I think the Cy Young races in both leagues are very close and this could change at any time, but right now if I had a vote I think I’d go this way.

It’s a tough choice to put one pitcher at #1, but I’d vote for David Price as the American League Cy Young award winner. 17-5 right now with an E.R.A. of 2.54 and 175 strikeouts. He’s the shut down guy ever staff needs and he’s kept Tampa Bay in the race all year. Jered Weaver slots in at second on my ballot. Injuries have cost him some starts this season and maybe the Cy Young. He has 16 wins in the starts he’s made, but he was skipped his last start because of a shoulder injury and will see if this lingers the rest of the season. Third and fourth could be flipped flopped for me, but right now I’m putting Chris Sale 3rd and Justin Verlander 4th. Both pitchers are the ace’s of their staffs and are battling to win the American League Central. Sale has a few more wins and a little better E.R.A. Verlander has a big lead in strikeouts and has pitched more innings. The 5th spot on my ballot goes to Matt Harrison of the Texas Rangers. The Rangers are the best team in the American League and Harrison has been the best pitcher on their staff. I could’ve dropped Felix Hernandez in the fifth spot, but I believe Harrison deserves a mention as he gets the fifth spot on my ballot.

The National League award will be very interesting to see how it goes. There are quite a few pitchers who could walk away with the award, but this is who I got.

Johnny Cueto wins the National League Cy Young for me. He’s the reason the Cincinnati reds have the big division lead they have right now and should win the National League Central. Cueto has 17 wins right now and should pick up a couple more before the seasons ends. Second on my ballot would be Gio Gonzalez. Yes; a Washington Nationals pitcher that’s not Steven Strasburg. Gonzalez has 18 wins, 185 strikeouts and doesn’t have to worry about being shutdown. Craig Kimbrel gets the third spot on my ballot. I know there are people out their who say relievers shouldn’t win the Cy Young award, but why not? They’re pitchers right; Kimbrel’s E.R.A. is 1.18 right now. He’s converted 35 of 38 save chances and has help keep Atlanta in the lead for the wild card in the National League. If you didn’t like my third pick you won’t like my fourth pick either. Aroldis Chapman is my fourth place pitcher; yes another reliever. 118 strikeouts as a closer; he did make a few starts early for the Reds, but he’s been lights out since moving to the bullpen. I don’t think you can fill out a Cy Young ballot and not include R.A. Dickey. Dickey is tied for the National League lead in wins at 18 with Gonzalez. He has 195 strikeouts and has only walked 45 batters; which for a knuckleballer is fantastic.

With a few starts left for each of these pitchers this could all change as close as these races are, but right now this is Who I got.

It’s that time in the baseball season where everyone starts talking about who’s going to win what award. I thought I’d start with the Rookie of the Year for each league.

I think the American League is kind of a lock for Mike Trout. There’s a better than average chance that he’ll be a unanimous selection, but who’s next. I think if I had a ballot I’d put Yoenis Cespedes from Oakland 2nd. I know there are people out their that will ay he’s not a rookie since he played professionally in Cuba before this season. According to Major League Baseball he’s a rookie and 2nd on my ballot. Now if anyone had an issue with my 2nd place rookie then they’ll have the same issue with my 3rd place rookie Yu Darvish. Same deal as Cespedes; he played professionally in Japan before this season, but again he’s a rookie here. To fill out my top five I’d vote for Wei-Yin Chen from Baltimore and Jesus Montero from Seattle at four and five.

Now the National League is a tougher choice for myself. I know that everyone wants to give the award to Bryce Harper, but I’m no sold that he’s the Rookie of the Year. Harper is hitting right around .245, but he has played solid defense and his team is in 1st place. I think my 1st place vote would go to Wade Miley from Arizona. He was their only All-Star this season and they’re in contention for the wild card spot in the N.L. He leads all rookie pitchers in wins right now with 14 and his E.R.A. is 2.80. I even think I would lean to putting Yonder Alonso ahead of Harper on my ballot. I know Alonso only has 6 (six) home runs, but he plays his home games in San Diego. I think to fill out my ballot on the N.L. side I’d vote Todd Frazier from Cincinnati 4th; even though he’s making a late run and could move up by the end of the season. I’d give Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs my 5th place vote. He’s only had about half a season to put up his numbers, but he’s hitting in the .330’s and will end up well int double digits for home runs.

Who are your choices?
