Ryan Braun released an apology this week and at least he admitted to using a performance enhancing drug. He used the injury excuse for turning to drugs but I don’t believe that at all. This apology was better than Jason Giambi’s years ago since Braun said he used drugs. I didn’t read Braun’s statement word for word but I wonder if he apologized to the guy who handle his sample. He killed this poor guy in the media trying to cover up his drug use. Now we’ll see if Braun’s teammate and the Milwaukee Brewers fans will forgive him. If he comes back and puts up good numbers I’m sure all will be forgotten; but if he comes back and struggles you wonder how the fans will react to him. If anyone believes that Braun only started using after he had an injury you’re really giving him the benefit of the doubt there.

On a positive baseball note it was announced yesterday that Vin Scully is coming back to broadcast Los Angles Dodger games next season. Scully is one of my favorite guys to listen to when I get that free MLB Extra Innings preview a couple of times a year. You have to wonder how many more seasons Scully can continue to broadcast games but I hope he sticks around as long as he can.

Dan the Man and I did our preview of the NFC & AFC South divisions on Thursday. It was my turn to do the NFC. So of course Dan the Man handled the AFC but I did have to help him a little. Hopefully you got a chance to listen live or you can go into the archives and listen still. The previews are fun to do and it really helps me in my fantasy drafts covering teams like this. There is so much talent in the NFC South on offense that it should be a fantasy players dream if they can land a few of these guys. A lot of the players in this division will go early at their positions. Doug Martin will be the 2nd or 3rd running back off the board. Jimmy Graham should be the 1st tight end selected. Julio Jones will be drafted early and Roddy White shouldn’t be too far behind him. We haven’t even mentioned quarterbacks as Drew Brees is a top three (3) guy with Matt Ryan being a solid fantasy pick and I wouldn’t complain if I had to start Cam Newton at quarterback. You can check out Mr. Fantasy’s mock draft to see where he has these guys going. Also look at his list of top players to see where he has these guys ranked.

There hasn’t been a lot of NBA talk on the show as of late but I saw where Chris Paul was voted president of the players union. I know there was a lot of buzz that LeBron James was going to run for this position. Paul is replacing Derrick Fischer as head of the players union. Paul is the top point guard in the NBA and I don’t know how much time he’ll have to allocate to the union, but hopefully it won’t affect his play on the court.

So not only is Alex Rodriguez performance enhancing drug (P.E.D.) user, he’s also a snitch according to a report from 60 Minutes. The news show is reporting that A Rod’s camp released the names of Ryan Braun, teammate Francisco Cervelli and other players who were involved in the Biogenesis scandal. Of course Rodriquez denied all of these reports in a press conference yesterday but did you expect him to say anything else. It’s a good thing for Alex Rodriquez that I’m not commissioner of baseball because I would’ve suspended him for life. I caught just a second of a report that said Ryan Braun is going to come out and admit he used P. E. D’s and apologize. This should be interesting because no one has ever really admitted they’ve used anything. Jason Giambi apologized for something when he had P. E. D. issues but he never mentioned what he was apologizing for. I have to wonder how the Yankees are handling all the A Rod garbage. It’s one thing to rat out someone from another team but he threw a teammate under the bus in all this. I also wonder how pitchers from other teams will handle this. Will they throw A Rod a little bit of chin music for snitching on one of their teammates. I’d have to think he’ll be hit by a few more pitches than he normally would be.

The NFL pre-season is up and running. Last night (Friday) Fox had a national game featuring the New England Patriots vs the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I watched almost half of the game. I don’t know about you but when the third stringers get into the game I normally stop watching. Oddly I caught the highlights of the game later at night and they seemed to want to try to find a way to talk about Tim Tebow. Now being a fantasy football player the big story to me was the injury to Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin. It looked like Martin took a knee to the helmet but was able to walk off under his own power and looked alright walking to the locker room. Martin of course is day-to-day and it’s early enough in the pre-season for him to recover for week 1. Now Martin is a top three pick in most, if not all fantasy football drafts and a serious injury to him would shake up everyone’s fantasy draft board. Hopefully he’ll be fine and end up being the top fantasy player people are counting on. Just a little more on the fantasy front. I heard one fantasy expert say that C. J. Spiller should be the 2nd pick in your fantasy draft right behind Adrian Peterson. This is an interesting pick for me since Spiller has never been the full-time starter. He split time with Fred Jackson last season until Jackson got injured. Spiller is that take it to the house kind of player every time he has the ball in his hands and is very effective in the passing game as well. On my board I had Doug Martin (Tampa Bay) and Arian Foster (Houston) ahead of Spiller. In most fantasy drafts Spiller was going right around pick #6 or #7 but has started to move up most draft boards. With any fantasy football league it depends on what scoring system you use on how these players will work out.

Dan the Man and I did a special show on Thursday previewing the NFC & AFC East divisions. We’re going to continue to do these previews and next week we go through the NFC & AFC South teams. It’s always fun for us to go through and do these previews. I got to do the AFC side of the preview and noticed that two of the teams I previewed had no idea who their starting quarterback will be. It actually also helps me find those sleeper type players that help your team win your league. We’re going through all the divisions with special Thursday show and I hope you’ve had a chance to listen and they help you out.

If you’re a fan of National League baseball a lot of experts are saying your playoffs are set. It’s the Atlanta Braves out of the East. The Los Angeles Dodgers out of the West. The other three (3) playoff teams are out of the National League Central division. Either the Pittsburgh Pirates or the St. Louis Cardinals winning the division and the Cincinnati Reds claiming the 2nd wild card spot. Of course either the Pirates or the Cardinals would be a wild card team depending on who wins the division. Sadly for Schaumburg Stu he has to “wait until next year” for his Chicago Cubs.

NFL Preview

An Early Friday Show

20130623-191732.jpg

I’ve noticed that there are actually a lot of people drafting for fantasy football already. This is tough for me to do as the season doesn’t start for about three (3) months or so and a lot of things can happen between now and then. Going with the trend we had Sports Time Radio’s fantasy expert Mr. Fantasy rank his top 10 Quarterbacks and wide receivers on Friday nights show.
Here’s his list:

Quarterbacks
#1 Aaron Rodgers
#2 Drew Brees
#3 Peyton Manning
#4 Tom Brady
#5 Matt Ryan
#6 Matthew Stafford
#7 Cam Newton
#8 Colin Kaepernick
#9 Russell Wilson
#10 Robert Griffin III

Wide Receivers
#1 Calvin Johnson
#2 Brandon Marshall
#3 Andre Johnson
#4 Dez Bryant
#5 Julio Jones
#6 A. J. Green
#7 Larry Fitzgerald
#8 Demaryius Thomas
#9 Roddy White
#10 Vincent Jackson

So the NBA Finals came down to a 7th game. The Miami Heat won their 2nd consecutive title and LeBron James was named finals M.V.P. It was the outcome a lot of people predicted at the start of the season, but it wasn’t as easy as experts thought. Even though Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and James predicted championships and a lot of them I’m not sure this team will get them. You have to wonder if Bosh likes being the forgotten superstar. He was one of the top players in the NBA before signing with Miami. Would you consider him that now? The off-season is always fun as the question have already started for other teams besides the Heat. Will Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett be in Boston at the start of next season? Where will Dwight Howard end up playing next season? Then of course the draft is coming up; so who”s the #1 pick?

The NHL season is coming to a close as well. The Stanley Cup finals are down to the best 2 out of 3 games between the Boston Bruins and the Chicago Blackhawks. The series went from great goaltending to an offensive explosion; so you wonder which series will get tonight in game 5. You would think the faster more offensive game would favor the Blackhawks, but the Bruins have found ways to win throughout the playoffs. The goaltenders become key down the stretch and you’d have to think the team with the best goalie will be hosting the Cup in the end.

Baseball is ready to step up and take center stage. How is your favorite team doing? How do you think they’ll do the rest of the season?

We are in playoffs now.  Hope you made the cut, and I would say stay with what got you there.  If you have decisions that need to be made, maybe this will help you.

Quarterbacks Start’ems.

  • Eli Manning – It’s December and the Giants win.  Falcons are 17th against the pass and Eli has thrown for 8 TD’s in previous 3 games.
  • Cam Newton-Faces bad San Diego Defense.
  • Russell Wilson- Has averaged two TD’s and only thrown 1 INT over the last 5 games.  He plays a soft Buffalo pass defense
  • Matthew Stafford –Arizona already has given up.  Detroit is a dangerous team thru the air.

Quarterback Sit’em

  • Andrew Luck –Has thrown 8 TD’s and 10 INT’s over the last 5 games.  He faces a tough defense that is going to prove last week was a bump in the road.
  • Jay Cutler-Bear’s system is bad.
  • Tony Romo- Was subpar against a good Bengals defense, now faces a great Pittsburg defense that must win this week if they are going to make the playoffs.
  •  Colin Kaepernick-This is the biggest game in his NFL career and he faces the best team in the NFL.  I think he is going to be glad NFL players have short memories this week.

Running Back Start’em

  • Steven Jackson-has been a good play the last 5 weeks and this trend continues against the Vikings average run defense.
  • Alfred Morris-He has proven when the offense leans on him he produces.  This week looks like they will need to with RGIII’s injury.
  •  Frank Gore-Needs 30 yds to break the franchise rushing record.  He faces one of the worst rush defense and should have solid production this week.
  • C.J. Spiller– Fred Jackson is out this week and Seattle is 22nd against the rush.

Running Back Sit’ems

  • Chris Johnson-Jets can play defense.
  • Demarco Murray- Pittsburg gives up the fewest rushing yds.
  • Ryan Mathews– He is on my list of biggest busts this year.  He has 1 rush TD this year and has only broke 90 yds rushing once.
  • Doug Martin-You must start him, but Drew Brees against the worst pass defense in the NFLTampa Bay may need to abandon the run to keep up.

Wide Receiver Start’em

  • Cecil Shorts-Number 1 target in Jacksonville.  He will get plenty of targets this week against Miami.
  • Hakeem Nicks- Now that he has returned he has seen 10 targets a game.  This is the time of year the Giants play their best football.
  •  Chris Givens-I know he only had 3 receptions last week, but he was targeted 10 times.  He will be thrown to early and often.
  • Greg Jennings-Next man up with Jordy Nelson out.  Greg Jennings will step in and have a great game.

Wide Receiver Sit’em

  • Larry Fitzgerald-Write him off for the rest of the year.
  • Stevie Johnson-Seattle is 4th against the pass. Big Jack you have over valued this guy all year.
  • Torrey Smith-He disappears against good defenses.  This week is Denver and they have a great passing defense.
  • Dez Bryant- Has a broken finger and faces a great defense this week.

Tight End Start’em

  • Greg Olsen-TD in previous 2 games.
  • Martellus Bennett– TD in previous 2 games
  • Kyle Rudolf-Rebounds from bad game against Chicago.  Had a TD in previous 3 games.
  • Heath Miller – 5 for 66 yds

Tight End Sit’em

  • Brandon Pettigrew– Not getting a lot of looks
  • Antonio Gates– Packed it up.
  • Jermichael Finley-Not playing good
  • Owen Daniels-Bust alert, been in a funk last 3 weeks

Let me know how you like this and if you agree.  You can always get me @mrfanofsports or Email the show.

Week 14 was crazy.

We saw many blow outs and several teams didn’t show up this week in big situations.

Steelers, Texans, Falcons, Bears and Bengals all choked.

Can I stop hearing Tampa Bay and making the playoffs?  Will the Bears even make the playoffs after dropping another one?

Accountability time, I told you this is what you should do last week.  Let’s see how I did.

Quarterbacks Start’ems.

  • Eli Manning – 22 of 35 for 259 4 TDs/2 INTs
  • Joe Flacco-16 of 21 for 182 3 TDs/1 INT
  • Andrew Luck- 16 of 34 for 196 1 TD/ 2 INT
  • Matthew Stafford –27 of 45 for 264 1 TD/1 INT

Quarterback Sit’em

  • Phillip Rivers –21 of 41 for 200 3 TDs
  • Jay Cutler-22 of 44 for 1 TD / 2 INTs
  • Tony Romo- 25 of 43 for 268 1 TD/1 INT
  •  Russell Wilson-7 of 13 for 148 1 TD/1 INT

  • Hakeem Nicks-4 for 67 yds 1 TD
  • Jeremy Maclin- 9 for 104 yds 1 TD
  •  Chris Givens-3 for 25 yds
  • Torrey Smith-1 for 21 yds

Wide Receiver Sit’em

  • Larry Fitzgerald-1 for 2 yds
  • Stevie Johnson-6 for 71 yds
  • Brian Hartline-2 for 34 yds
  • Steve Smith(Car)- 7 for 109 yds

Tight End Start’em

  • Owen Daniels-2 for 24 yds
  • Jason Witten-4 for 62 yds
  • Jermaine Gresham-4 for 43 yds
  • Heath Miller – 5 for 66 yds

Tight End Sit’em

  • Brandon Pettigrew– 3 for 43  1 TD
  • Antonio Gates– 3 for 31 yds

Week 14 Start’em and Sit’em

Posted: December 8, 2012 by Sports Time Radio in Uncategorized

Week 14 has a lot of great story lines.

Who will separate themselves in the Rookie of the year race?  I see it as a three horse race between Luck, RGIII and Wilson.

Is this the AFC championship preview?  New England hosts the Texans in what should be a great game.

Can the Steelers keep their playoff dreams alive?  The last spot comes down to Bengals and Steelers.

Now Which is the better division, all year everyone proclaimed the NFC as the better division, but I don’t see it that way anymore.

Let’s get into this week’s Fantasy Start’em and Sit’em

Quarterbacks Start’ems.

  • Eli Manning – Big day against a bad Tampa Defense and it is December.  Look for the Gaints to get really hot down the stretch.
  • Joe Flacco-Washington has a bad pass defense.  Ranked 31st against the pass, Flacco has a great afternoon.
  • Andrew Luck- Will be rookie of the year and we are watching something special developing this season in Indy, add in a bad Tennessee team=big afternoon.
  • Matthew Stafford –Has the best receiver in the NFL and Green Bay gives up yards thru the air.

Quarterback Sit’em

  • Phillip Rivers –Nothing left to play for and faces best defense in the NFL.
  • Jay Cutler-Great QB, bad system faces decent defense means bad numbers
  • Tony Romo- Bengals pass defense is under rated.  Romo will have trouble moving the ball.
  •  Russell Wilson-Is now in the Rookie of the year conversation after beating the Bears.  He will have a tough night against the Cardinals.

Running Back Start’em

  • Steven Jackson-87 rushes/369 yds/1 TD over the last 4 games.  This includes 2 games against the 49ers.  Buffalo is 30th against the rush, expect his production to be high.
  • Jamaal Charles-K.C has found its rushing attack. Charles has Averaged 105 yds a game over the last 4.  Lokk for this to continue this week.
  •  Chris Johnson- He has struggle the last 2 weeks, but he a colts defense that is not very good against the rush.  He gets things back on track this week.
  • Ben Jarvus Green-Elis– Faces a middle of the road rush defense and they will be keying in on A.J. Green and the pass defense.

Running Back Sit’ems

  • Bryce Brown-I know he has been putting up BIG numbers since starting, but this week he faces the best run defense.
  • Reggie Bush Faces 3rd rank rush defense
  • Ryan Mathews– he has been struggling on posting 53 yds a game and 0 TDs over the past 5 games.  Now he faces the number defense in the NFL.
  • Steven Ridley Has scored in his last 4 games.  Houston is stout against the run and Ridley will have a tough night.

Wide Receiver Start’em

  • Hakeem Nicks-Faces the 30th rank pass defense.
  • Jeremy Maclin- Faces worst Pass Defense in the NFL.
  •  Chris Givens-20 targets/16 Rec/207 yds/1 TD over the last 2 games.  This continues against Buffalo’s middle of the road pass Defense.
  • Torrey Smith-He is being targeted a minimum of 8 times a game over the last 4 games combined with the NFL’s worst pass defense.  He should put up good numbers this week.

Wide Receiver Sit’em

  • Larry Fitzgerald-He is one of the best receivers in the NFL, but no QB and a tough physical Seattle defense means another bad night.
  • Stevie Johnson-His production has been up over the last 4 games, but the Rams defense is better than they get credit for.  It will be tough game for him.
  • Brian Hartline-Faces 2nd best pass Defense
  • Steve Smith(Car)- 6 for 52 YDs when he faced Atlanta in September.  Atlanta is looking to clinch the number 1 seed.  His numbers will be similar to last time.

Tight End Start’em

  • Owen Daniels-Great situation against New England.
  • Jason Witten-Romo will be looking for his check down all night.
  • Jermaine Gresham-Who be open a lot
  • Heath Miller – Big Ben returns

Tight End Sit’em

  • Brandon Pettigrew– Not the main Tight end anymore.
  • Antonio Gates– They’ve packed it in
  • Jermichael Finley-Over rated
  • Brent Celek-not been productive

Let me know how you like this and if you agree.  You can always get me @mrfanofsports or Email the show.

Week 11 Start’em and Sit’em

Week 11 shapes up to have some high scores put up by fantasy players.

Trade deadlines in most leagues have come and gone.  Hope you improved your team for the stretch run.

Quarterbacks Start’ems.

  • Robert Griffin III – Eagles defense has been struggling since firing their Defensive coordinator.
  • Matt Schaub has a favorable match up this week.
  • Andrew Luck- look for a shoot out this week.
  • Carson Palmer – has thrown for 300 yds 4 of the last 5 weeks.  This week he gets the Saints and his success continues.

Quarterback Sit’em

  • Phillip Rivers – has only topped 300 yds 2 times this year.  Last time he faced Denver he threw 4 picks.
  • Joe Flacco Faces number one defense in the NFL.
  • Alex Smith Bears are tough thru the air.  The 49ers will ride Gore all night.
  •  Sam Bradford Jets do one thing good.  Bradford will have tough night.

Running Back Start’em

  • Steven Ridley– The colts have their hands full stopping this New England offense.  Ridley will be very productive against a Colts rushing D that is in the bottom third of the league.
  • Jamaal Charles and the chiefs running attack looked impressive last week against a tough Steelers defense.  This week against an average Bengals rushing defense he has another good week.
  • Alfred Morris faces a bad Eagles team.  He will see lots of carries and rack up yds.  Just wish he found the end zone more often.
  • Frank Gore– Bears faced the best rushing attack of the year last week and gave up over 100 yds.  This week Frank Gore will repeat this feat.

Running Back Sit’ems

  • Ray Rice is always a must start, but Steelers defense will slow him down.  Look for his production to be below average for him.
  • Shonn Greene The rams are middle of the road against the rush, but since the Jets are 1 dimensional they will stop the run and force Sanchez to beat them with his arm.
  • Rashard Jennings has not rushed for more than 60 yds this year.
  • Vick Ballard has been ineffective this year.  It continues this week in a shoot out against New England.

Wide Receiver Start’em

  • James Jones Has 8 TDs in 9 games.  He seems to find the end zone, look for this to continue.
  • Andrea Johnson faces the Jaguars.  They will struggle to stop the run and look for the pass game and Johnson to benefit.
  •  Steve Smith (Car) – should see lots of targets against the worst pass defense in the NFL.
  • Denarius Moore Great opportunity against a soft Saints Defense.

Wide Receiver Sit’em

  • Vincent Jackson seems to disappear.  He is averaging 3 Receptions a game in the last 5 games.
  • Mike Wallace No big Ben = offensive issues this week.
  • Danny Amendola Jets do one thing good, stop the pass.  Look for him to have a tough night.
  • Torrey Smith has averaged 3 receptions a game this year, but TDs has kept him relevant.  Don’t expect him to see the end zone this week.

Tight End Start’em

  • Antonio Gates is not getting a lot of receptions, but he is getting TDs.  He has 4 over the last 4 weeks.  Look for this to continue.
  • Jason Witten Continues to get lots of targets.
  • Jermaine Gresham continues to be a big part of the Bengals offense.
  • Heath Miller – Will be the safety net for Byron Leftwich.

Tight End Sit’em

  • Dwayne Allen only 2 TDs this year, not very productive
  • Dustin Keller Jets can’t move the ball thru the air.
  • Jermichael Finley continues to be irrelevant.
  • Brent Celek Part of a bad offense.
