10/11/14 How was your Week?

Another post season extra innings game for the Kansas City Royals is another Royals win. Last night the AL championship series got started last night (Friday) in Baltimore. The Royals broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the 10 inning with a solo home run by Alex Gordon off of Orioles reliever Darren O’Day. Also in the 10th Mike Moustakas added a 2 run home run off of the Orioles Brian Matusz. The Baltimore Orioles were able to get just 1 run back in the bottom of the 10th off of Royals closer Greg Holland, but that wasn’t enough, as the Royals take Game 1, 8-6. If you would’ve told me that the Royals would hit 3 home runs and the Orioles would steal 2 bases I would’ve thought that you had the teams backwards. Alcides Escobar hit the 1st home run for the Royals in the top of the 3rd inning to give them their first run and a 1-0 lead. Gordon doubled with the bases loaded to put the Royals up 4-0. Adam Jones got 1 run back for the Orioles singling in the bottom of the 3rd to make it 4-1. Billy Butler hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 5th for a 5-1 Kansas City lead. The Orioles got 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th; 1 on a Nelson Cruz double and then 2 runs on a Ryan Flaherty single to cut the lead to 5-4. The Orioles tied the game up at 5-5 in the bottom of the 6th inning on an Alejandro De Aza infield single. The game stayed that way (5-5) until the 10th inning. I’m not sure that either team got the effort they thought would get out of their starting pitchers. Chris Tillman lasted just 4 1/3rd innings for Baltimore while James Shields lasted just 5 full innings for Kansas City. These are two teams with very good bullpens, but in Game 1 both Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis pitched 2 innings for the Royals. You have to wonder if they would go to either guy today. It’s an afternoon game for these teams today with Yordano Ventura and Bud Norris listed as the starting pitchers for each team. The later game is the San Francisco Giants against the St. Louis Cardinals as the National League championship series gets started in St.Louis. Madison Bumgarner is the Game 1 starter for the Giants while Adam Wainwright starts for the Cardinals. If you’re looking for the games on television. The Royals/Orioles game is on TBS while the Giants/Cardinals is on Fox.

It didn’t start off that way, but the critics finally got their close Thursday night football game. The Indianapolis Colts beat the Houston Texans 33-28. The Colts jumped out to a 24-0 lead and it looked like your typical Thursday night blow out. Andrew Luck threw two touchdown passes in the 1st quarter. One to Ahmad Bradshaw and one to Coby Fleener along with a Trent Richardson touchdown run and an Adam Vinatieri all in the 1st quarter gave the Colts that 24-0 lead. The Texans added the next two touchdowns a Ryan Fitzpatrick to Andre Johnson 4 yard pass and an Arian Foster 12 yard run. Vinatieri add a field goal before halftime and the Colts went in with a 27-14 lead. Houston struck first in the 3rd quarter with Foster 2nd touchdown run. This time 2 yard run. Luck cane back and found T.Y. Hilton on a 33 yard pass for the Colts last score. J.J. Watt scored on a 45 yard return of a fumble for the last points of the night. The Texans had some chances in the 4th quarter, but a Johnson fumble ended one drive and a Fitzpatrick fumble ended their last drive and the game.

On the fantasy side of the game Luck put up good numbers for you going 25 of 44 for 370 yards and 3 touchdowns. Luck did throw an interception and fumbled once. Hilton was another big fantasy guy with 9 catches for 223 yards and a touchdown. Bradshaw had 34 yards rushing and 25 yards receiving with a touchdown. Fleener only had 2 catches, but with one being for a touchdown that will look good among tight ends. Indianapolis other tight end Dwayne Allen had 3 catches for 49 yards, but didn’t get into the end zone. Again though he should give you solid numbers for a tight end. Foster was the big fantasy guy for the Texans with 109 yards rushing and those two touchdowns. He also added 3 receptions for 32 yards just for a few extra points. Johnson also had a good night with 7 catches for 99 yards and a touchdown. If your league scores for individual defensive players Houston safety Kendrick Lewis had 10 tackles with 6 of them being solo tackles and of course there’s Watt who not only had the fumble return for a touchdown, but added 2 sacks, 3 tackles for loss and 4 quarterback hits. That won’t be a bad fantasy night for a defensive player of your league scores them. While we’re on the fantasy side of football a couple of big players may be out this week. I saw a report that said Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green will not play tomorrow. because of a toe injury. Also Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson is being listed as doubtful because of that ankle injury he’s been dealing with for a few games now. Make sure to check your injury status on these two guys before you set that fantasy line up.

The NHL season got under way on Wednesday night with four games and every team has taken the ice for the 2014-15 season. The Montreal Canadiens Tomas Plekanec, the Anaheim Ducks Corey Perry and Mason Raymond of the Calgary Flames got off to quick starts for their teams scoring 3 goals in these first few games. I know, I know each team has only played two games at the most, but sometimes a hot start for a player can continue though a season. There is a full slate of games tonight and it looks like all of them will be covered by their local broadcast teams. For me that means the Chicago Blackhawks open at home tonight against the Buffalo Sabres.

9/27/14 How was your Week?

I realized after I posted the blog on Wednesday that I never did go through and see how Mr. Fantasy did picking his high scores at each position. Mr. Fantasy has struggled this year picking high scorers; so let’s look and see what Week 3 was like. He went with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts was the highest scoring quarterback. Rodgers ended Week 3 in 28th place for quarterbacks. At the running back spot Mr. Fantasy went with DeMarco Murray of the Dallas Cowboys. Marshawn Lynch of the Seattle Seahawks was the highest scoring Week 4 running back. Murray ended up tied for 3rd place. Ay wide receiver Mr. Fantasy chose another Green Bay Packers player; Jordy Nelson. Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons was the highest scoring wide receiver in Week 3. Nelson ended the week as the 50th highest scoring wide receiver. At the tight end position Mr. Fantasy’s choice was Delanie Walker of the Tennessee Titans. Walker was the 18th highest scoring tight end in Week 3. Chicago Bears tight end Martellus Bennett was the leading scorer at tight end in Week 3. I even make Mr. Fantasy select a kicker and he went with Mike Nugent of the Cincinnati Bengals. Nugent was the 19th highest scoring kicker in Week 3 while Adam Vinatieri of the Indianapolis Colts led the kickers in scoring. Mr. Fantasy’s sleeper pick was New Orleans Saints running back Khiry Robinson. Robinson scored 11.40 points in Week 3, carrying the football 18 times for 69 yards, but no touchdowns. Tune in tomorrow (Sunday) from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. to see who Mr. Fantasy’s picks for high scorers for Week 4.

We may have actually watched two of the highest scoring players from Week 4 already play. In the New York Giants 45-14 victory over the Washington Redskins; Giants Quarterback Eli Manning and Tight end Larry Donnell put up some big numbers. Manning was 28 for 39 throwing the football. Manning threw for 300 yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. 3 of Manning’s touchdown passes find Donnell who ended the game with 7 catches for 54 yards. Even through Donnell’s yardage numbers are low those 3 touchdowns will put him at the top of tight ends for Week 4. Even Manning’s other touchdown pass went to a tight end as Daniel Fells caught that one. Victor Cruz put up solid numbers with 6 catches for 108 yards. Ruben Randle led the Giants with 8 catches, but for less yardage (89 yards) than Cruz had. Rookie Andre Williams was the Giants leading rusher with 66 yards on 15 carries and 1 touchdown. Rashad Jennings had 55 yards on 13 carries and even Peyton Hillis had 8 carries for 31 yards. Dan the Man was the only one of us to pick the Giants to win this game as Schaumburg Stu, Mr. Fantasy and I all had the Redskins winning. Kirk Cousins struggled for Washington. Cousins was 19 of 33 throwing the football for 257 yards with 1 touchdown and 4 interceptions. Alfred Morris had good rushing numbers for Washington. Morris carried the football 12 times for 63 yards and a touchdown. If the game had been closer Morris would’ve had even better stats. Running Back Roy Helu was the Redskins leading receiver with 5 catches for 78 yards. Niles Paul was on his way to having a good game until he was injured. Paul had 3 catches for 60 yards. Paul was starting for injured Jordan Reed/ 3rd string tight end Logan Paulsen came in for Paul and added 3 catches for 28 yards. Depending on the size of your league the Washington passing touchdown may not have helped you. Cousins threw an 18 yard touchdown pass to Andre Roberts. I’d be surprised to see if Roberts was owned in a high percentage of leagues. So the last two Thursday night games have been blow outs. Week 5’s match up is an NFC North match up as the Minnesota Vikings are at Lambeau Field to play the Green Bay Packers.

On the late night Friday show, I pointed out how some people just seem to have things go their way. Derek Jeter is one of these people. Thursday night was Jeter’s last game at Yankee Stadium and the weather forecast all day was predicting rain. Not only was there no rain, but the game had an ending Hollywood would’ve wanted. The Yankees had a 5-2 lead going into the top of the 9th inning. Yankees closer David Robertson is in to finish the game. Nick Markakis walks to start the top of the 9th inning. Alejandro De Aza strikes out for the 1st out. Adam Jones hits a 2 run home run to cut the Yankees lead to 5-4. Nelson Cruz strikes out for the 2nd out and the Yankees are 1 our away from a victory. Steven Pearce is the batter for the Orioles and he hits a solo home run to tie the game 5-5. J.J. Hardy flew out to en the top half of the 9th. Evan Meek came in to pitch the 9th inning for Baltimore. Jose Pirela led off the 9th with a single and Antoan Richardson came out to pinch run for Pirela. Brett Gardner laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Richardson to 2nd base and now who’s up for the Yankees; you got it Derek Jeter. With 1st base open and 1 one you wonder how the crowd would’ve reacted had the Orioles decided to intentional walk Jeter, but they didn’t. Jeter proceed to hit the first pitch he saw to right field for a walk off single in his last game at Yankee Stadium. Now I’m sure if it would’ve been a movie, Jeter would’ve hit a solo home run to win the game, but this has to be just as good and it was real. Now can we please put an end to the pitchers grooving pitches to Jeter. The Orioles where playing for home field advantage throughout the playoffs and I doubt they would’ve wanted to give a game away with that on the line. I have to go on record and say I am not a Yankees fan, but Jeter transcends that and it was a fitting ending to a great career in his home ballpark. Jeter’s career comes to a close in Boston’s Fenway Park. Jeter has said he won’t play shortstop Saturday or Sunday, but should be in the Yankees line up as a Designated Hitter (DH) for the Yankees. Here’s my question for you. In 5 years Derek Jeter will go into the baseball Hall of Fame on his 1st ballot. While I doubt he’ll go in with 100% of the votes because no one does. Will Jeter go in with the highest percentage of votes ever? Tom Seaver is the player who received the highest percentage of votes going into the Hall of fame at 98.84% he is followed by Nolan Ryan at 98.79%. Will Jeter get a higher percentage than that?

Mr. Fantasy and I had a bounce back week in picks after a horrible Week 2. Mr. Fantasy won the week with a 12-4 record, Dan the Man and I went 11-5 while Schaumburg Stu was 9-7. Dan the Man still has the overall lead after three weeks at 29-18. Mr. Fantasy moved into 2nd at 27-21, I improved to 26-22 while Schaumburg Stu is 25-23. Week 4 has the first set of bye’s for teams; so will see how we do with fewer games.

It looks like the 10 teams are set for the Major League Baseball (MLB) playoffs. All that it looks like is left is to decide who will win the divisions and who gets the wild card spots. The Baltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have locked up their respective divisions and it looks like the Oakland A’s will claim one of the wild card spots. The Detroit Tigers have a one game lead over the Kansas City Royals in the American League (A.L.) Central. It;s looking more and more like the team that doesn’t win the division will get the second wild card spot. The Royals currently have a 3 game lead over the Seattle Mariners for that second wild card spot. The Mariners picked the wrong time to have a losing streak; they’ve lost 4 games in a row going into today. While only the Washington Nationals have clinched their division in the National League (N.L.) the Los Angeles Dodgers magic number is 1 to win the N.L. West. The St. Louis cardinals have a 1 game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the N.L. Central. So again one will win the division and the other will go into the wild card game. The San Francisco Giants are in the other wild card spot. It looks like the Angels and the Nationals will have the best records in their leagues and get home field through the playoffs. In our pre-season picks Schaumburg Stu and I have the Nationals winning it all, Dan the Man has the Dodgers to win the whole thing and Mr. Fantasy has the Oakland A’s as his World Series champions. So all of your picks are in the playoffs and will have to see how it plays out.

With the first three weeks of the National Football League (NFL) season in the books no team has really looked like the dominant team. There are still 3 undefeated teams. The Philadelphia Eagles, the Arizona Cardinals and the Cincinnati Bengals are all 3-0, but I don’t think the 1972 Miami Dolphins have anything to worry about this season. The 1972 Dolphins where the only NFL team to go undefeated through the season including the playoffs and every year the former players get together and toast their old team when there are no more undefeated teams left in a season. I would be very surprised if the Eagles, Cardinals or Bengals made a run at that record. Looking the other way the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Oakland Raiders and the Jacksonville Jaquars are all 0-3 and trying ti find that 1st win.

When it came to the running back position for fantasy football this season there was a big 4 and then the rest. Well those 4 running backs haven’t gotten off to great starts and you have to wonder if fantasy owners are in panic mode yet. Jamaal Charles of the Kansas City Chiefs had been banged up this season, but even when he was healthy he wasn’t putting up numbers. Charles has 9 carries for 23 yards; he’s also caught 5 passes for 23 yards. Not the weapon fantasy owners thought they where getting. Matt Forte Chicago Bears; Forte normally handles a good percentage of the chances for the Bears offense, but this season he’s not producing with those chances. Forte has 42 carries for 136 yards and 19 catches for 145 yards. LeShon McCoy Philadelphia Eagles; McCoy is averaging 2.9 yards a carry, but he does have a rushing touchdown which neither Charles or Forte have. McCoy has carried the football 60 times for 175 yards and has caught 10 passes for 64 yards. The 4th running back was Adrian Petersen. We all know the situation Petersen has gotten into; so we don’t need to go over it all again here, but from a fantasy prospective he’s a bust this season and maybe done as a football player. If you own McCoy or Forte I don’t think you have anything to worry about and they should get themselves on track. Charles however they may be some concern and it would revolve around his health. Charles has an ankle injury and is expected to participate when the team resumes practice Thursday. If you’re a Charles owner you’ll have to watch his health from game to game and see if he’s improving. Hopefully he’ll get healthy and you won’t have any concerns, but right now you’ll need to watch his status.

I hope you’re ready for the National Hockey League (NHL) season to start. October 8th is opening night with 4 games on the schedule. The Montreal Canadians and the Toronto Maple Leafs kick things off in Toronto. A half an hour after that the Philadelphia Flyers are in Boston to play the Bruins. Then there are 2 late starting games. The Vancouver Canucks are in Calgary against the Flames and the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings host the San Jose Sharks. With the regular season close to getting underway a lot of experts are taking the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup. This of course is good news for us here at Sports Time Radio since the show is based in the Chicagoland area. It would be nice to see the Blackhawks win another cup, but there are a lot of good hockey teams out there. I’m sure will make are picks before the regular season gets started; so you’ll have to tune in and see who we go with.

Let’s call it Wednesday 9/17/14

Well Week 2 of the National Football League season is over and our picks for the week weren’t great. Dan the Man was the only one to end the week over .500 at 9-7 and he’s 18-14 on the season. Schaumburg Stu was 7-9 in Week 2 and is 16-16 so far this season. Mr. Fantasy and I where a horrible 6-10 for Week 2 and are 2 games under .500 at 15-17 through two weeks. Luckily it’s earlier in the season and there’s time to make up some ground.

At the end of the show on Sunday’s, this football season I have Mr. Fantasy pick which players will be the highest scorer at their positions. He didn’t get any picks right last week; so let’s see how his picks for Week 2 went. At quarterback Mr. Fantasy choose Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos for the second week in a row. Manning ended up as the 4th highest scoring quarterback as Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was the top scorer. Mr. Fantasy went with a Chicago Bears player at running; he choose Matt Forte Week 2’s highest scoring running back was Giovani Bernard of the Cincinnati Bengals. Forte finished the week in 35th for running backs. Mr. Fantasy had Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green as his pick, but the highest scoring wide receiver was the Green Bay Packers Jordy Nelson. Green got injured during Cincinnati’s game and didn’t score in Week 2. Mr. Fantasy’s tight end pick for Week 2 was Antonio Gates of the San Diego Chargers. Sure enough with 7 catches for 96 yards and 3 touchdowns Gates was the highest scoring tight end for Week 2. At kicker Mr. Fantasy went with Cairo Santos of the Kansas City Chiefs. Dan Bailey of the Dallas Cowboys was the highest scoring kicker in Week 2. In Week 2 Santos finished 20th among kickers. Mr. Fantasy’s sleeper of the week was Minnesota Vikings running back Matt Asiata. Asiata had 13 rushing attempts for 36 yards and caught 5 passes for 48 yards and a touchdown and he was worth 21.40 points.

Two divisions were clinched last night in major league baseball. The Washington Nationals won the National League for the second time in three years and for the first time since 1997 the Baltimore Orioles won the American League East. There where a lot of people picking the Nationals to win their division this season including myself and Schaumburg Stu. The Orioles on the other hand have to be considered a bit of a surprise division winner. The Nationals have 2 number 1 overall picks on their roster in Steven Strasburg and Bryce Harper and at the trading deadline added Asdrubal Cabrera to solidify the 2nd base position. The Orioles on the other hand lost All-Stars; catcher Matt Wieters and 3rd baseman Manny Machado for the season with injuries and then slugger Chris Davis was suspended 25 games for failing a drug test. So how did the Orioles win the division? Well it starts with the best free agent signing on the off-season Nelson Cruz. Cruz has provided the power that Davis didn’t this season with 39 home runs and 103 RBI’s while hitting .264 so far this season. Adam Jones is hitting .286 with 25 home runs and 87 RBI’s. While Chris Tillman appears to be the ace of the Orioles pitching staff leading them in ERA at 3.29 and in strikeouts with 139. Wei-Yin Chen is leading the Orioles staff in wins with 16. Bud Norris has 13 wins and Tillman has added 12 wins. After an early season injury to Tommy hunter Zach Britton stepped in and picked up 35 saves in 39 attempts. Andrew Miller was added to the bullpen at the trading deadline and the left-handed specialist posted a 1.04 ERA in 19 games. Darren O’Day was 5-1 with 23 holds and an ERA of 1.53 as Baltimore’s main set up guy. For the Orioles to have playoff success the pitching staff will have to continue throwing the way they have this season. While it looks like Tillman, Chen and Norris will be the top three starting pitchers in the playoffs if the Orioles decide to use a 4th starter they’ll have to pick between Ubaldo Jiménez, Miguel González or Kevin Gausman for that spot. For the Nationals it looks more and more like Denard Span will be the key to Washington’s post season success. Span is hitting . 299 and has 31 stolen bases in the lead off spot. Anthony Rendon bounced between 2nd and 3rd base this season, but has hit .285 with 20 home runs and 80 R.B.I.s. Adam LaRoche is leading the Nationals in home runs right now with 24, but Ian Desmond is just 1 home run behind at 23 and Desmond also leads the Nationals in RBI’s with 88. If Ryan Zimmerman can get healthy he’ll add one more bat to the Nationals line up either playing everyday or coming off the bench in the post season. Tanner Roark leads the Nationals pitching staff with 14 wins while Strasburg and Jordan Zimmerman have 12 wins apiece. Zimmerman leads the staff in ERA. at 2,83 and Strasburg has the most strikeouts on the staff with 230. Doug Fister and Gio Gonzalez round out the Nationals starting five and you have to wonder which one would head to the bullpen for the playoffs. Drew Storen has stepped into the closer role as Rafael Soriano has struggled down the stretch. getting Soriano right may be another key to playoff success for Washington. Was it just an odd fact that these two teams who aren’t located that far apart clinched their divisions on the same night. Let’s see who’s next to wrap up one of baseballs playoff spots.

9/10/14 Let’s call it Wednesday

Week 1 of the NFL season is in the books. If you’re a regular listener to Sports Time Radio you know that Dan the Man, Mr. Fantasy and I picked the winners of the games. This season we classed it up a little bit by adding Schaumburg Stu to the list of people picking games. I do have to warn you not to bet your hard-earned money on any choices we make. As you’ll be able to tell by our records we don’t bet our own money on our picks. For Week 1 we all ended up taking different roads, but everyone got to 9-7 for the 1st week. We’ll pick the Thursday night game on Thursday’s show 5:00 p.m.to 6:00 p.m. and will announce the rest of our picks on the Sunday morning show 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

On last Sunday’s show I made Mr. Fantasy pick one player at each position who would be the highest scoring player for fantasy in Week 1. Now I’m using the scoring system we use in our Yahoo fantasy league to get my point totals; so your league may use a different scoring system. Mr. Fantasy was a little Denver Bronco heavy for his Week 1 picks; so let’s see how that worked out for him. At quarterback Mr. Fantasy said Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos. Manning ended up being the 3rd highest scoring quarterback as Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons and Matt Stafford of the Detroit Lions scored more points. At running back Mr. Fantasy went with Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings. Peterson finished 23rd among running backs as Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Von Bell was the highest scoring running back in Week 1. The next Denver Broncos player Mr. Fantasy went with was wide receiver Demaryius Thomas. Thomas finished Week 1 54th out of the wide receivers. Calvin Johnson “Megatron” was the top wide receiver in Week 1 action. At tight end for Week 1 Mr. Fantasy went with Dallas Cowboys veteran Jason Witten. Witten was the 34th tight end from Week 1. This is where Mr. Fantasy should’ve went with a Denver Broncos player as Julius Thomas was the highest scoring tight end for Week 1. I even made Mr. Fantasy pick a kicker for Week 1. Again he went to the Denver Broncos for his pick. Brandon McManus is the Broncos kicker filling in for the suspended Matt Prater. McManus ended Week 1 in 16th place among kickers. Matt Bryant of the Atlanta Falcons took the top spot for kickers in Week 1. To be fair to Mr. Fantasy I didn’t give him any time to prepare for this segment of the show and I just dropped these questions. Now he’ll know every week that they’re coming.

While the baseball season is headed to a close the experts are starting to throw out their picks for the top awards. The debate that always seems to come up is who is the National League MVP? Many of these experts are picking Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw as MVP While Kershaw is far and away the best pitcher in major league baseball I don’t think he should be the NL MVP As of this writing Kershaw has made 24 starts for the Dodgers. It doesn’t look like Kershaw will get to 30 starts this season. A baseball team will play 162 games in a season; should a guy that plays in less than 30 games be the M.V.P. Kershaw will easily win the Cy Young award for the NL this season. Kershaw is 18-3 with a 1.67 ERA in his 24 starts. While Kershaw has had a great season and has great numbers I again have to ask; is a guy who plays in less than 30 games the MVP? No one in the NL has stepped up to claim this award as their own, but we still have some time left this season. San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey has been one of the hottest players in baseball and if he can continue will be in the running for MVP The Miami Marlins have hung around the wild card race even after losing their #1 pitcher (Jose Fernandez) to injury. Will that get their star player Giancarlo Stanton some MVP consideration. The Pittsburgh Pirates find themselves back in the wild card chase. Defending MVP Andrew McCutchen is their star, but would the Pirates be where they are without the play of Josh Harrison? While I don’t think that McCutchen or Harrison will win the NL MVP they both should pick up some votes. Just to put it out on the table; st the beginning of the baseball season we selected who would win awards this season. For NL MVP, Dan the Man picked Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mr. Fantasy went with Carlos Gomez of the Milwaukee Brewers. Schaumburg Stu selected Bryce Harper of the Washington nationals and I went with Yader Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Did you know that the WNBA is playing their championship right now. The Phoenix Mercury have a 2 games to 0 lead over the Chicago Sky. The Mercury won Game 1 83-62 and last night won Game 2 97-68. The series is set for a best 3 out of 5 games. Phoenix will try to close out the series Friday night in Chicago. Phoenix set a record in Game 1 by shooting 58% and added some more records in Game 2. The Mercury set a WNBA Finals record margin of 29 points. Tonight was another record-setting night for the Mercury all around with Diana Taurasi surpassing Katie Smith for second on the WNBA Finals all-time scorers list and tying her for the most 3-pointers made in WNBA Finals history. I’m betting you weren’t expecting any WNBA in this blog.

With the Major League Baseball pennant races heating up in a big way, the NFL getting ready to start and the Team USA keeping the NBA in the news people have a tendency to forget about the NHL in their off-season. The NHL did find a way to grab some headlines when a rumor came out that they where looking to add 4 expansion teams by the year 2017. The cities rumored to get expansion franchises are Las Vegas, Seattle, Quebec City and a second team in Toronto. NHL spokesman Gary Meagher has said that there’s no talk of adding teams and expansion isn’t on the Board of Governor’s agenda. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed as much in an interview with TVA Sports that expansion was “Not in our plans,” he said. “Nothing new to report on expansion.” Any time you add teams to your league there’s a chance that it will water down your product but I like the idea of adding teams to the NHL. I think the cities that were mentioned would be good choices for NHL teams. Seattle has been looking for and deserves another professional sports team since the NBA’s Seattle Supersonics moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder. If you remember Quebec has had an NHL team before the Nordiques. The Nordiques started in the World Hockey League before moving to the NHL in 1979. They played in Quebec until the end of the 1995 season, after that season the team moved to Colorado and became the Avalanche. The Nordiques hold the distinction of being the only major professional sports team to have been based in Quebec City in the modern era, and one of only two ever; the other, the Quebec Bulldogs, played one season in the NHL in 1919–20. If you’re a Toronto Maple Leaf fan you might not like the idea of adding a 2nd team to the city there but it would be a good place for the NHL to add a team. The Maple Leafs are always among the best drawing teams in the NHL and as long as the 2nd team had an up to date stadium to play in and it wasn’t to close to where the Maple Leaf Gardens the team should do well. The interesting choice of cities would be the rumored team in Las Vegas. The first question that came to my mind was how would a professional hockey player handle the lifestyle of living in Las Vegas. A team in Vegas always raises the question if corruption might be an issue but players make so much money now; could someone actually buy an athlete off? I think at one point in time every major professional sports league has been rumored to be looking into having a team in Las Vegas and it looks like the NHL may be the first one to do it. How about you, are you for or against NHL expansion?

WE had our 1st of two fantasy football drafts last night. It was our traditional snake style draft. Snake style means you select #1 through #20 and then the team with the 20th pick gets the 21st pick and the draft heads back down to #1. I ended up with the 3rd pick in the draft. Dan the Man was picking 8th and Mr. Fantasy was way down at pick #17. At #3 I went with Philadelphia Eagles running back LeShon McCoy. Dan the Man also went running back in the 1st round taking Eddie Lacy of the Green Bay Packers. Being the homer that he is at #17 Mr. Fantasy selected Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall. Picking 4th in the 2nd round Mr. Fantasy took running back Alfred Morris of the Washington Redskins. With the 13th pick of the 2nd round Dan the Man went running back again taking C.J. Spiller of the Buffalo Bills. My next selection was the 18th pick of the 2nd round and I took another running back like Dan the Man did. I went with Toby Gerhart of the Jacksonville Jaquars. I don’t want to go over every selection we made, but I’d like to go through two more rounds with you; so you can get an idea how we try to build our teams. In the 3rd round I took Percy Harvin; wide receiver Seattle Seahawks. Dan the Man took New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz and Mr. Fantasy’s 3rd round pick was Cleveland Browns tight end Jordan Cameron. Working the other way for the 4th round Mr. Fantasy selected another Cleveland Browns player. This time he went with running back Ben Tate. I know you where hoping I was going to type Johnny Manziel, but the 4th round would be way, way early to take Johnny “Football” that would be really early. In the 4th round Dan the Man selected Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. When it got to my pick in the 4th round I took Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten. The Mr. irrelevant pick in our draft was New Orleans Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro. Vaccaro was the 20th pick in the 22nd round to end our draft last night. Our auction league draft is tonight and that has an entirely different strategy that the draft we had last night does. There are many. many theories on how to put your auction league teams together and I haven’t found one that works for me yet. I’ve always looked for players I thought would put up good numbers and tried to land them at a value price. Or I’ll take a player who seems to be a good value at the price he’s at when his name is on the board. The example I’ll give you from last season that blew up in my face was the quarterback position. I ended up with Eli manning and Matt Schaub at the quarterback position last season and I paid less that $15 dollars for them. I thought I was in a good position with 2 choices at quarterback that may not have been spectacular but very solid players. Not to go into too much detail, but you know how those 2 picks worked out for me. I have to find a way to either spend my money better or just get better performance out of the guys I pay for.

Let’s call it Wednesday 8/13/14

If you listen to Sports Time Radio you know that we play in two 20 team fantasy leagues for baseball and football. One of the leagues is done using an auction format style draft while the other uses a more common snake style draft. Well the football drafts are coming up at the end of the month and it’s time to get ready for them. The auction league is much, much easier for me to get ready for. The snake league on the other hand can be difficult. How many of you have wanted a player and he goes a pick or two before you where going to take him and then you have to scramble and find another player at the last second? To add a little more pressure when that happens we run the leagues through Yahoo and there is a time limit on how long you have to make a pick. What’s given me trouble the last few seasons has been the running back position. We have to start two running backs each week and of course you’d like at least one running back on your bench to cover your bye weeks. That means that 60 or more running backs can be selected in our draft and if you don’t get a quality guy early on your in trouble. I’ve been trying to get running backs in order and here’s what I’ve come up with; maybe it will help you out as well.

If you happen to be drafting in the top four picks you’re going to get a top quality running back. You could put the names of Adrian Peterson, Vikings, LeSean McCoy, Eagles, Jamaal Charles, Chiefs and Matt Forte, Bears into a hat and as long as that player stays healthy you’ve got your guy. I have them ranked with Charles #!, Forte #2, Peterson #3 and McCoy at #4. Charles is on top because he doesn’t have the weapons around him that Forte has and that’s a good thing in fantasy football. Peterson has never really been involved in the Minnesota passing game and that can hurt his value especially in PPR (Points Per Reception) leagues. I think McCoy will be hurt be the addition of Darren Sproles this off-season more than people think he will be. There are four guys who aren’t quite to the level of the top 4 but you’d like to have. Marshawn Lynch, Seahawks, Eddy Lacy, Packers, Le’Veon Bell, Steelers and DeMarco Murray, Cowboys. Most experts would’ve included Lynch with the top-level guys, but look for his carries to be cut down this season. He;s also added up quite a few carries the last couple of seasons and that will wear on a running back. Bell and Lacy are kind of the same back. Both of them are coming off of solid rookie seasons where each of them missed games due to injuries. When healthy though they’ve proven they can get yards and touchdowns for fantasy owners. If there was a guarantee that Murray would play all 16 games this season he would be right up there with the top guys, but he always seems to be injured. If you take him this season and he stays healthy you could have a fantasy star on your hands. For me it’s Lynch at #5, Bell at #6, Lacy #7 and Murray #8. As we move along it gets tougher to rank guys as it’s guys coming off of injuries or guys who haven’t reached their potential yet. Montee Ball, Broncos, Doug Martin, Buccaneers, Arian Foster, Texans, Alfred Morris, Redskins, Andre Ellington, Cardinals, Giovani Bernard, Bengals, Reggie Bush, Lions and C.J. Spiller, Bills. For me I have Ball at #9; he had surgery for an Appendectomy, but all signs point to him being ready for Week 1 and he’s got Peyton Manning as his quarterback. #10 is Martin; he’s coming back off of an injury, but his new head coach s Lovie Smith and old school guy who likes to run the football. #11 I’m going with Spiller. There’s so much talent there and you think sooner or later he’s going to have that breakout season. I have Morris at #12 and Foster at #13. These are two guys in new systems with new head coaches that had great success in their old systems. Will that carry over? Bernard is #14; if he was the only back in the Cincinnati system he;d be ranked higher, but you have to wonder how much time he’ll share. Bush is #15; another guy in a time share situation and that’s to bad. He might out up big numbers if he played every down. Ellington lands at #16 for me. His head coach has praised him and said he’d be the every down back; you’ll just have to take that chance. We’re headed towards what would be the end of our 1st round; so if you reach a little here I can understand that. This next group could reward your choice. Ben Tate, Browns, Ryan Mathews, Chargers, Rashad Jennings, Giants and Toby Gerhart, Jaguars. Tate is #17; this is his first shot at being a teams every down back. He has had some injury issues; so there may be some risk reward with this pick. Jennings is at #18 another running back who needs to prove he can stay healthy, but if he does the Giants like to run the ball and if he’s their guy you’ll get the fantasy points. Gerhart would be that “sleeper” pick at #19. He’s the every down guy on a bad Jacksonville team, but he is effective in the passing game; so he should score points for you even on a bad team. Mathews split time last season, but got the majority of the carries; so I have him at #20. He’s another guy who needs to stay healthy for his fantasy owner. Remember you’re going to need to start two running backs every week. Zac Stacy, Rams, Frank Gore, 49ers, Chris Johnson, Jets and Ray Rice, Ravens. #21 Stacy could be a guy who ends up being better than this draft positions. The thing that may hold him down is the division he plays in. #22 Rice is in a new system run by Gary Kubiak and backs in that system do well. Remember though he’s suspended the first two games of the season. Johnson at #23 is with a new team that has a young quarterback and may rely heavily on the running game. That would be a huge plus for Johnson’s fantasy owner. Every year they say that #24 Gore’s carries are going to be cut or he’s going to play less and every year he puts up solid numbers. There’s always a chance that could happen; so there’s some risk with this pick. Bernard Pierce, Ravens is way up my board at #25. He’ll get to start the first two games of the season and Kubiak’s system has always featured two running backs. #26 Stevan Ridley, Patriots. you know he’s going to split time when you draft him, but he’s the rushing guy in that split. He should also be the guy getting the goal line carries. #27 Joique Bell, Lions maybe the best of the time share running backs out there. He should get those short yardage goal line carries. #28 Trent Richardson, Colts They seem dedicated to giving him carries. Will produce some numbers based on opportunities, even if he doesn’t wow you while doing so. #30 Steven Jackson, Falcons At one time a top-tier fantasy running back, but those skills appear to be gone. He should still get the bulk of the carries in this offense. #31 Darren Sproles, Eagles he goes from one offense where he fit in well to an offense where he might be a perfect fit. This is a pick that may pay off big for you. #32 Bishop Sankey, Titans should be the first rookie running back off of the board. The concern may be that he doesn’t get the goal line carries. #33 DeAngelo Williams, Panthers he’s been a let down for me before and I’ll try to stay away from him, but it’s that time of the draft. #34 Pierre Thomas, Saints he should get the most playing time out of their three headed backfield. With Sproles gone he could be used in the passing game more. #35 Danny Woodhead, Chargers had a good season last year and you’ll be looking for him to repeat that. #36 Shane Vereen, Patriots is mostly used in the passing game, but from time to time will get a carry. #37 Fred Jackson, Bills he’s Spiller’s back up, but if there’s an injury or if Spiller doesn’t produce Jackson could be a value pick. #38 Knowshon Moreno, Dolphins was the breakout running back last season, but left Denver. Had minor knee surgery recently. #39 Chris Ivory, Jets they like to run the football and someone has to carry it when Johnson doesn’t have it. #40 Mark Ingram, Saints I bought the hype that he would breakout last season and it cost me, but here I am again making him my last ranked running back. Here are a few more names in no particular order if you;re still looking for running backs. Khiry Robinson, Saints, Lamar Miller, Dolphins, Maurice Jones-Drew, Raiders, Andre Williams, Giants, Terrance West, Browns.

Now that NFL training camps are open fantasy football drafts should start happening. Yesterday (Friday) on Sports Time Radio we spent the entire show discussing football. There’s also suppose to the first Mr. Fantasy mock draft coming soon; so look for that. The conversation of who would be the #1 overall pick in our league came up. I believe that it will be Philadelphia Eagles running back LeShom McCoy or Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles. Mr. Fantasy added in Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. While any of these 3 would be good choices I think Charles is the pick here. Out of these 3 running backs Charles is the only one with an experienced NFL quarterback in Alex Smith. While Nick Foles had a break out season last year for the Eagles there are still some questions about him and remember he didn’t play a full season. Even though Peterson is used to have what you would call a below average quarterback under center it allows teams to stack the line of scrimmage against him and it does hurt his numbers. Can you just imagine the kind of numbers Peterson might out up with just an average quarterback. Does Peterson having Matt Cassell, Christian Ponder or rookie Teddy Bridgewater handing him the ball make you think teams won’t be keying on him. Top running backs always need help from a quarterback and while McCoy will get some help from Foles I don’t think Peterson will get enough from his quarterback and Charles will get the most from Smith. If you don’t end up with a top 3 pick; what do you do? Well with the Marshawn Lynch hold out Matt Forte clearly looks like the next best running back on the board. After Forte there are a group of players that could have great seasons for you or could leave you looking at your team asking yourself why you drafted this guy in the 1st round. In our league you have to start 2 running backs a week; so we have to hunt up other guys as well. I have three running backs that I’m looking at and wondering if I get them as my 2nd running back will they be worth that spot. Toby Gerhart is with the Jacksonville jaguars now and all reports are saying they like him as a 3 down back. If this is the case even on a bad team Gerhart might be worth a shot. This is the first time Gerhart will be the #1 running back for a team and that may have him trying to prove something. Another running back who hasn’t really been under the radar the last few seasons, but has changed teams and is that teams #1 running option is Ben Tate. The Cleveland Browns signed Tate to be their #1 running back and take some pressure off of Brian Hoyer to start and then Johnny Manziel, Tate has put up good number before as Arian Foster back up with the Houston Texans, but in Cleveland he’s the clear-cut #1 running back. The 3rd guy on my list is Rashad Jennings now with the New York Giants. David Wilson is coming off a serious neck injury and even when healthy was a disappointment last season. Jennings has some injury concerns of his own, but the Giants like to run the football and this could increase his numbers for you. Jennings should be the Giants #1 running back and it’s nice to have the #1 running back on a year that likes to run the football. If your that Fantasy football guy who likes to try to find the best rookie running back this may be a tough season for you to do that. Off the bat it seems like the only one who might get a reasonable amount of playing time would be Bishop Sankey of the Tennessee Titans. While Sankey is scheduled to split time with Shonn Greene; Sankey is the receiving back out of the pair. This should help Sankey pick up points from 20 yard line to 20 yard line, but it’s Greene who the Titans will use in-goal line situations. That means Greene will steal some touchdowns that belong to Sankey and of course points from your team. As always it’s still early in the NFL season and injuries change things in a big, big hurry. Will have to see how pre-season plays out, but it’s always fun to talk about it.

It seems like when Dan the Man wasn’t looking the San Francisco Giants took the National League West division lead from his Los Angeles Dodgers. While the Giants only have a half of a game lead over the Dodgers as I’m writing this a lot of baseball experts had the Giants as dead when the Dodgers went past them into 1st place earlier in the season. In pre-season picks we all went with the Dodgers to win the West, but a lot of people made that choice. I did have the Giants in the playoffs as one of the wild card teams. As the trade deadline draws closer you wonder if either team will make a move to try to separate themselves in the division. There has been some talk that Matt Kemp would be okay with being traded by the Dodgers and you have to wonder what they could get in return for him. Kemp is signed through 2019 for around $20 million dollars a season. I guess the question I would ask is would Kemp the right combination of prospects and a whole bunch of money be enough for the Dodgers to land David Price. Dan the Man’s ears just perked up. Yes I said David Price. While the Tampa Bay Rays have worked their way back into the pennant race in the American League East you have to wonder if a deal like that could happen. Would the Dodgers be willing to deal a Joc Pederson, Julio Urias, Corey Seager or Alexander Guerrero in a package to bring back Price. It would be a lot to give up, but it could give the Dodgers a World Series. Without a deal by either the Giants or the Dodgers will have some fun watching the N.L. West these last couple months of the season.

7/23/14 Let’s call it Wednesday

Every time I heard someone talk about the New York Yankees making a trade they ta;l about how they need to add pitching. Well the Yankees made a trade yesterday and it was for a third baseman. The Yankees dealt infielder Yangervis Solarte and minor league pitcher Rafael De Paula to San Diego in exchange for Chase Headley. Headley has been struggling this season in San Diego. In 77 games Headley was hitting.229 with 7 home runs and 32 RBI’s. Headley’s big season was 2012 where he finished 5th in the MVP voting. He’s battled injuries since then and hasn’t regained his form. Maybe a move to New York helps Headley find that 2012 form again. Solarte had been getting regular playing time for the Yankees, but was sent to the minors a few weeks ago. Solarte appeared in 75 games for the Yankees hitting .254 with 6 home runs and 32 R.B.I.’s. De Paula was pitching in Class A ball for the Yankees. He was 6-5 in 17 starts and had an ERA of 4.15. Will the Yankees go out and try to get more pitching like people say they need. The Yankees have talked to the White Sox about left-handed starting pitcher John Danks, but it never got farther than talks.

It looked like the biggest pitcher that would be on the trade market would be Tampa Bay Rays lefty David Price. You have to wonder if he’s even available right now. Tampa Bay is 5-3 in their last 10 games and are currently on a 6 game winning streak. Tampa bay is 48-53 and 8 games out of 1st place in the American League East. With 60 games left Tampa Bay can easily make up those 8 games, but I don’t think they could do that without Price. Will this winning streak be enough to get Tampa Bay to hold onto Price or is there a team out there that can bowl the Rays over with an offer they can’t pass up. It’s going to take quite an offer to get Price and you have to wonder if someone even has the prospects Tampa Bay would want in a deal for Price. Will find out in 8 days if Price is going anywhere.

I saw an interesting segment on which teams should’ve trading players and who they should be trying to trade. The thing I found interesting about this was the two experts they had in this segment had the Philadelphia Phillies moving quite a few players. They had the Phillies dealing or trying to deal 1st baseman Ryan Howard, second baseman Chase Utley, shortstop Jimmy Rollins, outfielder Marlon Byrd, staring pitcher Cliff Lee and closer Jonathan Papelbon. Some of these players may be dealt by the Phillies, but all of them I don’t think that will happen. The Phillies are 13 games out of 1st place and in last place in the National League East, but if these players were traded it may be the biggest in season make over of a major league team. As nice as it is to talk about these players being traded you must have a team that’s interested in them for that to happen. While pitching always draws interest and I could see Papelbon and Lee being traded. Do you want any of the other Phillies listed? Byrd is the one player I’ve actually heard talked about. It’s been said the Seattle Mariners might have an interest in Byrd. Seattle is looking for right-handed hitting power and Byrd has 19 home runs and 21 doubles so far this season. I haven’t heard any of the other names Howard, Utley or Rollins being mentioned in any trade talks. I guess it is fun to speculate and think about what a guy could do for a contending team if he was traded there.

Are you ready for some football? All the NFL teams training camps will be up and running by this weekend. Are you ready for your fantasy season? How do you think your favorite team will do this season? Can the Seattle Seahawks repeat? Slowly but surly these questions should start to get answered as we see more and more of these teams. We have two twenty team fantasy leagues that Mr. Fantasy, Dan the Man and I play in. One is an auction league; so you have to figure out what you’re willing to pay for who. Our other league is a regular snake style draft set up. You need to start two running backs every week in this league and with twenty teams it can be tough to find a good mix of backs. They come off the board pretty fast and I think I know who the first five or six picks will go. Not in exact order, but the players that will be picked. After that it’s tough to figure out who’s going where. Hopefully I’m picking in the Top 5 in this years draft.

Two long time major league baseball players announced their retirement this week. Colorado Rockies 1st base man Todd Helton and New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte are planning to call it a career at the end of this season. Helton was a 1st round pick of the Rockies; 8th overall in 1995. He made his debut August 2nd 1997 and has only played for Colorado for his entire career. He has over 2500 hits and is a lifetime .316 hitter. Andy Pettitte was drafted by the Yankees in the 22nd round of the 1990 amateur draft. Pettitte made his debut for the Yankees April 29th 1995. Pettitte has won 5 world series championships with the Yankees and has a 19 – 11 post season record. Pettitte spent 3 years pitching for the Houston Astros (2004 – 2006) before returning to the Yankees. Pettitte has over 250 career wins as well. This brought up the question on Friday’s show, will Helton and Pettitte get into the Hall of Fame? I heard one baseball expert say he thinks Pettitte will get into the Hall of Fame but it will take 10 plus years for him to be voted in. On the other hand this expert didn’t see Helton making the Hall of Fame. Sadly I watch way to much sports on television and I can’t remember which baseball expert made these comments.

We started Friday’s show by talking about the situation that NASCAR driver Martin Truex Jr. has found himself in. As you know Truex originally qualified for the Sprint Cup Chase but was knocked out when he was penalized 50 points for teammate Clint Bowyer spinning out and attempting to fix the outcome of a race. Yesterday NAPA announced that they where leaving Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) and would take their sponsorship elsewhere. If your Truex Jr., are you wondering what you did? Truex didn’t spin. It was Bowyer and it cost Truex Jr. his spot in the Chase. From all reports Truex Jr. had nothing to do with Bowyer spinning and affecting the outcome of a race but it cost him 50 points. Now he’s losing his sponsor and might end up leaving MWR. Truex Jr. did say “I’d always hoped that I’d be at Michael Waltrip Racing for a long, long time,” adding “That really hasn’t changed. But it’s a lot more confusing at the moment.” I guess we’ll see if someone will sponsor Truex Jr. next season or if he ends up leaving MWR for another ride.

Sunday mornings from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Blog Talk Radio Dan the Man, Mr. Fantasy and I are previewing the NFL games and offering as much fantasy advice as we can. The 2 hours goes very quickly and we try to get as much in as we can. Tomorrows show, Sports Time Radio’s Pregame Show, if you’d like to listen to us. On the show we almost pick who’s going to win the games. Here are last weeks results: Dan the Man was 10 – 5 while both Mr. Fantasy and I went 12 – 3. After 2 weeks of picks Dan the Man is 19 – 1, while Mr. Fantasy and I are both at 22 – 7 overall.

It looks like “The Bet” is going to be settled in the playoffs. If you’ve been listening to the show since the start of the baseball season then you know about “The Bet. ” Dan the Man picked the Los Angles Dodgers to win the World Series while Mr. Fantasy said they wouldn’t even be the 3rd best team in California. As the season went on, “The Bet” was amended from the best record to who goes the farthest in the playoffs. It’s a 2 team race now. The Dodgers clinched the Thursday night and it looks like Mr. Fantasy’s team is going to be the Oakland A’s. The A’s should wrap up the American League West shortly as the Texas Rangers have fallen out of the race and may not even get a wild card spot. What does the winner of “The Bet,” you ask? Well the loser has to buy the winner a brand new New Era 5950 fitted hat.

We haven’t spent a lot of time talking about it on the show but the NHL preseason has started, so hockey is just right around the corner. The regular season starts October 1st with these 3 games. The Toronto Maple Leafs vs. the Montreal Canadians; the Winnipeg Jets vs. the Edmonton Oilers and the defending Stanley Cup champions the Chicago Blackhawks vs. the Washington Capitals.
