So the baseball season is about three weeks old and I want to talk about week one. Yeah, yeah I know a little late, but better late than never.

The season opened on a Sunday night with the Houston Astros getting their 1st win as an American League team. After that my week got interesting. I was off of work the 1st week of the season and on my cable system I get a free preview of the Extra Innings baseball package. On that first Monday of the season I watched baseball for about 12 hours and I have to tell you it was fantastic. My co-host Dan the Man was so jealous of my situation. During the week I saw every team play at least a few innings. One of my favorite things is listening to the announcers from the other teams do the games. My favorite like a lot of people out their was listening to Vin Scully do the Dodgers games. The opening series with the Reds against the Angels was fun to watch. One night Arizona and St. Louis played 16 innings. I was able to see Yu Darvish throw 8 2/3 innings of a perfect game and much, much more. Sadly I could never afford to buy this package and if I had it I’d lose my job because I’d be watching baseball all the time. Also on the plus side of the free preview is if you’re a hockey fan as well the NHL games air on the same channels; so you got a bonus of free NHL games. The only negative on the entire experience was when they had games scheduled back to back on a station. A lot of times the first game would run late and you would get the second game until they had already played a few innings. Now they have enough channels to fix the issue and I don’t know if it’s different if you actually order the Extra Innings package. I know that the NBA & NHL playoffs are getting ready to start, but it’s baseball season. Even as I’m writing this I have the Mariners/Tigers game playing on my computer. Maybe I have a problem?

If you’ve listened to the show Sportstime Radio. Sunday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on BlogTalkRadio you know my co-host Dan the man and I live in the Chicago area. Now that the Blackhawks winning streak or as some experts pointed out a points scoring streak has ended the talk has turned to Derrick Rose.

Now I’ve never played a minute in the National Basketball Association (NBA); so I don’t know what that’s like. What I have in common with D. Rose is I have had reconstructive knee surgery three times. Twice on my left knee and once on my right knee. I’ve actually had a total of five knee surgeries, but two where considered minor knee surgeries. What I can tell you about this is sometimes the mental aspect of the recovery is the toughest part and I think that’s where D. Rose may be right now. He’s been cleared by the doctors to return to action, but he hasn’t yet. I don’t have D. Rose’ quote right off-hand, but he more or less said he doesn’t think he’s ready to come back. He also mentioned that he wants to be able to dunk off his left leg with no issues before he returns. Now I have to tell you he may never be able to dunk off that leg the same as he used to, but the only way he’s going to know is to try. I’m sure he’s done this in practice, but has to have the confidence to play in a game and get the chance to try it. D. Rose don’t wait until next pre-season to do this; get out and try it in a game before your season ends. The Bulls aren’t going to do anything negative to D. Rose; he’s their best player and their future. I’m sure they’ll limit his minutes at first and they can even rest him if he can’t play in back to back games. Believe it or not the best thing is to give that knee a try to see how it holds up, but you have to get past that mental block. There is a chance that D. Rose won’t be the same player he was before he got injured, but I think he’ll be just fine as long as he can get started. It’s always in the back of your mind, but once you get into the flow of the game it will become easier and easier to play. D. Rose has been killed in the local media here by a lot of guys and I didn’t want to do that to him. I do believe he needs to find his way back onto the court this season. Not only would it help him mentally and make the off-season less stressful, but it will help his team. It will also make him a good teammate and right now he needs to be a good teammate.

Now I don’t have any official ticket stubs from the training camps but this still falls under the topic, kind of, of this blog series. Either way I hope you enjoy it and don’t forget to listen to us on BlogTalkRadio.

A few years ago, when the Chicago Bears moved camp down to Burbanais, IL, my dad and I decided to take the hour or so drive down there. I was excited to get up on a hot,hot day to go watch the Bears practice and maybe stand in line and get some autographs. They had stuff for kids to do but of course the main draw was the gift shop. That year all I wanted was the fitted hat made by Reebok with the George Hallis patch on it. I thought I should just wait till our way out because just like Brookfield Zoo the only way out was through the gift shop…of course…but on our way out the entire wall of fitted hats was gone and I was s.o.l. As for getting autographs, ehh, I felt I was too old to do that being that only kids were in line for that. And for my age getting autographs isn’t the same as when I was a kid. One of the biggest reasons I wanted to go was to get these stupid cardboard cut outs of (Marty Booker’s) face on a Popsicle stick. I saw them on the news and just had to go get one. Everyone loves a gimmick. When we got there my dad and I sat in the bleachers, we’re so used to seeing them on TV up close, but sitting in those stands you can barely tell who’s who. I did see Urlacher sneak onto the field, he laid down in the back of a golf cart through the player entrance and exit, so that none of the kids would bother him for an autograph. What you don’t see in my pic is the pic of him on the cover of the program signing autographs but he’s looking in the direction of the camera. Make me wonder if he only did it for the shot and then walked away. Chicago’s ABC sports guy Jim Rose was there. Yup. So as my dad and I are watching, he turns to me and says that this is not as fun as when he took us up to Plattville, WI in 1987 to see the training camp. Which was essentially the 85 Superbowl Bears.

Even though, I was only 7 years old, I never forgot this experience. We spent two days in Wisconsin and there was literally nothing else to do up there besides go to the training camp. I couldn’t tell you where we stayed, we could have camped on the grounds for all I know. We must have gone later in the camp season because they were scrimmage games going on. And at that time everyone on that team was a super star to me. My favorite part of the whole experience of course was standing in line and getting autographs and we couldn’t leave until I got Walter Payton’s autograph. So, after camp was over, we stood along the roped off player entrance & exit to get as many as we could. Doug Floutie was on the squad then, I’ll never forget that he not only signed autographs but if you were a young beautiful woman, he would step beyond the rope and pose for pics. Class act and great guy, it seemed. I recently watched him on MLB Networks The Next Great Knuckler. 25 years later same great guy I saw on TV. Mike Singletary seriously worked the entire crowd and gave everyone an autograph. He was still doing this two hours after the entire team was off the field. Nobody like him, he was there so long I got two autographs. At the time, I didn’t really know he Jim Harbaugh was but I got his and Neal Anderson’s autographs. But oddly enough, we never saw Sweetness, neither at the open of camp or the end. So after all the players went to the locker room, we moved to the players parking lot exit/entrance. We were there for hours! We saw everyone leave. My absolute favorite had to be seeing The Refrigerator William Perry leave on a red scooter type vehicle. Classic. I wish we had pics of that one. But still no Payton. We literally spent the entire day at the camp waiting for him. The next thing I know, I look around us and its my parents myself and my sister and one other family of 4. I just watched the gate and this Iroc-Z pulls up to gates, they open up, Richard Dent is driving someone’s in the back seat and in the passenger seat is WALTER PAYTON! Does he stop? NO!!! I don’t know what took over my mother and me but we took off running. I was a fast, my mom was faster. We were in such a zone, that we ignored the fact that my little sister was somewhere behind us laying on the ground crying because she tripped and fell. At least my dad stayed behind to help her I guess. The other family just didn’t keep up. We lost them somewhere. Dent would slow down enough for us to get close and then take off. This went on for several blocks, I couldn’t tell you how many but it was more than a few. After this stop and go game, finally, Dent makes a complete stop. Payton looks at my mom and me and says, “Ok, one autograph.” I hand him my paper he signs it, my mom thanks him, I thank him he looks at my mom and asks, “Is she going to be all right?” My mom shrugs it off, “yea, yea, yea, she’s fine.” As far as my autograph days go, that was the best day as kid to meet Walter Payton. Now when I look back though, I think what a jerk to do that to us over one autograph but the kid in me never let’s me dwell on it too long without saying, “Yea, but you got Payton’s autograph.” Years later, we’re telling that story and my mom is blue in the face with laughter and admits that when Walter asked if she’s going to be alright, my mom and I had no clue that my sister was down the street crying, screaming bloody murder because she tripped and fell. It can be a sensitive topic sometimes but i still got Sweetnesses autograph. All in all it just seemed more exciting as a kid going to the training camp.

But we’ll see, I live in the west suburbs of Chicago in Romeoville, IL. Our mayor John Noak has been trying to bring the training camp to Lewis University. Of course Lewis will not speak about the topic. I believe the goal is to get them here for 2014 summer training camp. Some believe that if former Chicago Bear and pro wrestler beats Noak in this Aprils election it will lock in the deal bringing the Bears to Lewis. It’s quite the little controversy here. The Bears contract with the current training facility at Olivet University is up in 2013. The rumor is the Bears would like the training camp to be closer to season ticket holders. Whether its true or not, I don’t know but if they choose to move it to Romeoville it would allow all of Chicago to access the training camp by almost any means. In 2014, construction on a train station is to begin in 2014. The train that runs through starts in the loop and ends in Joliet. The train station would be about a 5-10 minute bus ride and the hub in Joliet it stops at is about a 10-15 minute bus ride from that train station which has other connecting lines taking you to the south suburbs and back to the loop. It would boost tourism to my village, generate increased tax revenue. Plus help generate more traffic into local business that should hopefully help create more money for the villages beautification plans. In the end I’m just hoping all that happens to increase my property value so I can make some money on my house. Plus, I would like to get us a Sports Time Radio one of the Bears on the show.

My First ever NBA game and of course it’s a Bulls game. I could have only wished as a kid to go. I had friends that had gone to Bulls games during the dynasty. One of my friends even went to the playoffs against the Lakers and at 12 years old, his dad bought him a tee shirt that said with asterisks F**k LA. He wore it once to the roller rink and we were told to leave, so we walked down to the sports card store and hung out there till our ride came to get us. Anyways, I get a call from my cousin, “Hey you want to go to a Bulks game?” I told him I had no money and he told me no worries. He had free tickets from his mom who got them from work. Not only are they free but they are in a suite. Now not a bad way to go to my first basketball game, but it did spoil me. The free tickets also included premium parking. Free tickets for a suite and free parking, hopefully there’s free food also. There was but let’s just say it was free so I’m not complaining. Once we arrived to the suite level, I swear if you wanted, you could just walk into any other suite if you felt like it. Now you walk in and first thing I see is a private bathroom and coat closet. Small details but makes me feel like I’m spoiled. Once you turn the corner there’s a small kitchen, mainly with a sink mini fridge and top cabinets that your not supposed to go in but hey you shouldn’t have it unlocked if you don’t want me to open it. A small buffet table is set up with fancy platters but the food inside not so fancy. There was a small lounge but to get to the seating through the glass door and there’s three rows of seating. Sit where you want, so of course, I go straight to the front. I immediately notice that our section is directly behind the cheerleaders. So all game the minute a Pom Pom shakes my eyes are off the court and on them. I’ll be honest with everything being free including the beer and I’m not driving so who cares and that’s why I don’t remember too much about my first Bulls game. I do know it was a blast and I couldn’t have asked for a better time, especially when the desert cart showed up. Now apparently you were only supposed to take one desert but no one told me that. I picked the biggest brownie Sunday and took a large fancy chocolate chip cookie. I encourage my cousins to do the same. Desert was great, the game was great everything was great about this game. Couldn’t have asked for a better time, thanks SuperBad (my cousin). I do plan on going this Easter, so should put together a much better blog about my experience, Rose probably wont be back and they might not be that great but I’m expecting to still have great time.

“Dan the Man”

I’d like to think I’m an avid fantasy player and hopefully one of the better ones out there. I regularly play baseball, football and hockey. Now I did take this hockey season off because of the strike, but I’ll be back next season. I’ve even played basketball any kind of March madness pick’em, Nascar and even a PGA golf league. I don’t think I would call myself a fantasy expert, but I have a lot of experience in fantasy leagues. Now this actually all started when I bought myself a new car. If you’ve listen to the show you know I bought a 2013 Chevy Sonic LT. When I bought the car they gave me a free subscription to Sirius XM radio. Now I’ve enjoyed having this and have had a good time flipping channels. Well I found the Fantasy Sports channel. What has surprised me the most about this station is how many people play in very, very small fantasy leagues. The experts take calls and give advise and very, very rarely do they get a call from someone who’s league is bigger than 12 teams. Now for me these are way to small for baseball leagues and it takes the fun out of it for me. Most fantasy league rosters have 20 to 25 players on it. Now there are 30 teams in Major League baseball with 25 players on a roster. Now my math isn’t always the best, but I believe there are 750 players on major league rosters. Now you’re wondering about my league; well it’s 20 teams with 23 roster spots per team. I believe this really makes our league better. We do suffer from time to time with teams who stop changing line ups but every league has those type of problems. Trust me I understand the difficulty in researching baseball with everything going on and it’s easier to get into a small league. If you love baseball do the work get into a bigger league and have fun with it. Don’t jump up and down when you win your league and it has 10 or 12 teams in it; jump up and down when you win your league and it has 20 teams in it. Just like Mr. Fantasy does when he wins a league; I’ve known him long enough to know he does this. Anyway I’ll reach out to you guys who take the time to read this and by the way thank you for that. We have a 20 team league with some openings right now; so sign up and give it a try. It’s a free league we run through Yahoo. Here’s all the information you’ll need to sign up.

It’s Yahoo Fantasy baseball

The League name is Touch’em All

The league ID# is 33024

The league password is payup1

I hope to see you in the league and good luck.

Sunday April 24, 2011. LA Dodgers vs Chicago Cubs

This was a great day to go to head to the north side of Chicago and beginning our annual tradition of spending Easter Sunday at Wrigley Field. My dad called me up a couple days before to tell me one of the women he works with had free tickets, Do you want to go? Does Pinocchio have wooden balls?? Of course I want to go. Where’s the seats? He didn’t really know, so it was a nice surprise when we picked him up and to see that we had great seats on the first base side. The only problem…the Cubs were playing the Dodgers. You say what’s the problem? My dad and have never been to a Cubs\Dodgers game that LA didn’t win. Crazy I know, what are the odds? Kind of like the year I went to a Cubs game once a week for 5or 6 weeks and Rich Harden started every game. Your next question, why do you continue to go to games against the Dodgers? I don’t know but every time I check the schedule, I just can’t help it. I was even at a game where Tommy Lasorda did the 7th inning stretch and I happen to be near the booth when he was leaving. Wish I had a pen & program for an autograph but I got to shake his hand.

33,000 people showed up on this holiday to see Mike Quade put The Big Z up against Donny Baseball’s lefty Hiroki Kuroda. The one thing with Carlos Zambrano at this time was everybody loved the way he played the game but watch out if he gets angry. Top 1. Z takes the mound, leading off for LA, Aaron Miles and on his second pitch sends a deep line drive to right field for a triple. Not a great start. Casey Blake digs into the box and takes 1st base after being beaned by Z. Andre Either steps to the plate sends a ground ball deep to second base allowing Miles to score the first run of the game and giving himself a single. The cleanup man Matt Kemp sends a grounder to Soriano, scoring Blake. Man on first and second, Jerry Sands double to RF scoring Either and moving Kemp to 3rd. 3-0, no outs. James Loney hopes to keep the momentum going, he drives in Kemp but grounds out to 1st base. Already 4-0 and were not even close to finishing this inning. Cather Rod Barajas sends a fly all to LF and its scored as a sac fly as Sands scores. Come’on Z just one more out. Shortstop Jamey Carrol sends a short fly ball to right field to end the inning. Eventhough the Cubs are down by 5, the crowd cheers as they run off the field in hopes of a bounce back in the bottom half of the inning. Lefty Japanese pitcher vs Lefty Japanese batter Kosuke Fukudome sends a ground ball to the first base side and lands himself a lead off double. 2cd basemen Darwin Barney steps in the box, sees two pitches and sends a ground ball through the hole in the left side of the diamond. With Fukudome on third and Barney on first, Starlin Castro sends a ground ball deep to SS and reaches on an E6 force out at second but sends Barney to third and score Fukudome. With two men on Aramis Ramirez goes down swinging. The 10 million dollar man, Carlos Peña sends a line drive to center scoring Barney. Center fielder Marlon Byrd goes down swinging sending Alfonso Soriano to the plate. The first pitch he sees is a wild one moving both runners over a base. With runners in scoring position, he works it to a 2-2 count only to go down swinging. What a first inning, combined we had 7 runs 7 hits and an error.

Top 2. Kuroda grounds out to short. Back to the top of the order, Miles reaches on an error by Barney but Blake grounds into a 1-4-3 double play to end the inning. The stadium erupts, who doesn’t love seeing a routine DP. Bot 2. Giovanni Soto is caught looking and Zambrano goes down swinging. Kosuke grounds out to first to end the inning. Before the third starts, time for a baño break and hopefully the discount on concessions is still going on. Either way we need refills and I want a SuperRope. Before I get back to the game, let me make it clear, I don’t go to baseball games for the bathrooms. Many many sports talk people in Chicago whine about the horse troffs that we have to use. Hey ladies, you want me to call you a wambulance? Seriously, you should see the guys that line up for the stalls. If they had a room where you just walk in and pee on the wall I’d still go. Now, the real problem is the flow, no pun intended, of the bathrooms. There could be more especially for the women. I’m just glad I never have to stand in that line. I think I’ll save this rant for its own blog.

Top 3. Right fielder, Either hits into a routine 3-1 ground ball. Kemp takes the first pitch, then sends a line drive double to left. He’s killing it today. Sands goes down swinging but Loney sends a ground ball to left scoring Kemp to add to their lead. Big Z gets Barajas to fly out to Byrd to end the inning. Bot 3. Barney goes down swinging on three straight pitches, Castro grounds out to third. Aramis digs and sends a grounder to left for a double. Peña steps up the crowd is stirring, hoping to see him send one onto Waveland Ave. One and two count and he goes down swinging to end the third. 6-2 Dodgers. Jamey Carroll leads off the top of the 4th with a double but Kuroda strikes out. Miles sends a line drive single to left. Men on first and third, Casey Blake grounds into a 4-6-3 DP and Zambrano is out of what could have been a disastrous inning. Kuroda takes down Byrd, Soto & Fonsy in order.

Top 5. Big Z gets Either swinging, catches Kemp looking and forces Sands to ground out to Barney, but his day is over when Quade puts Reed Johnson in to pinch hit for Z. Another 1-2-3 inning for Kuroda. John Grabow is at the mound now And gets James Loney to lead off the top 6 with a ground out but Barajas singles to center. Carroll flys out short to right. Kuroda reaches on an error. Miles digs in to send a liner deep to center field scoring Barajas. With Kuroda on third and Miles on first, Blake sees five pitches and walks to first. Bases loaded. Either steps to the plate and swings at the first pitch sending a fly ball to right-center field but Byrd is there to end the inning. Bot 6. Castro leads off but grounds out. Ramirez singles to center. Peña flys out. With two outs Byrd sends a line drive to left, Aramis doesn’t stop at second keeps going its going to be close and he’s out! Top 7 Justin Berg replaces Grabow and takes Kemp, Sands & Loney down in order.

The 7th inning stretch at Wrigley has become such a great promotional tool and there’s nothing like it at Wrigley Field. But for the life of me, I can’t remember who was there. I’m going to have to take a lot of notes from now on. Soriano leads off the Bot 7 with a line out to SS. Soto doubles to left. Quade decides to pinch hit for Berg, Tyler Colvin takes his place but pops up to SS. With two outs, Kosuke steps in the box and sends Soto to 3rd on a single to left. Darwin Barney digs in and takes the first pitch for a ball. Kuroda shakes off a couple calls, checks on Fukudome, throws home Barney swings ground ball up the middle to center. Soto scores, Fukudome stops at third. Don Mattingly decides to go to the bullpen and brings in Mike MacDougal and he gets Castro to ground out to end the inning.

Kerry Wood takes to the mound in the top of 8. Wood gets Barajas to line out but walks Carroll on 6 pitches. Marcus Thames steps in for MacDougal and flys out to center. Wood closes out the inning by getting Miles to groundout to Peña. Blake Hawksworth comes to the mound in the bottom 8. Ramirez sees four pitches and grounds out to short. Blake gets Peña to go down swinging. He gets a 2-2 count on Byrd, single to third. Soriano at the plate, 3-1 count ground ball to third to end the inning.

Pitcher Marcos Mateo relieves Wood and starts the inning by walking Blake, Either singles advancing the runner. Matt Kemp digs in, stares down to the mound, Mateo throws, Kemp swings at the first pitch sending back deep center field Byrd gets under it catches but can’t stop Blake from advancing to third. Jerry Sands works a full count into a base on balls loading the bases. Loney solid swing right to Barney to Castro to Peña to end the inning. Geo Soto walks up and the cubs fans are stirring, hoping for a chance at a comeback. He works a 3-2 count now every person is standing, clapping, cheering. Ball Four! The organist begins to play, the stadium is filled with hope at a W. Blake DeWitt pinch hits for Mateo but pop fouls out to 1B.
Fukudome lines out to 1B but with Barney at the plate and a “defensive indifference” Soto ends up at second only to remain there as Darwin lines out to second. The moment everyone was waiting for was to sing “Go Cubs Go” but it didn’t happen today. Am I to blame, or is it my dad or both of us. Whether or not, I will always be drawn to see the Cubs vs Dodgers. Maybe its the fact that the Dodgers swept the Cubbies in the playoffs. Or maybe it’s just that since I was a kid if we always went to at least one game a year. The experience of going to Wrigley was always great, win or lose. Something I always did with my dad as a kid and now we’re trying to travel to get tat experience of the ballparks. I do hope to see this series one day in LA.

NFL year in review; my predictions.

I started off the year by predicting the division races and every teams final record. Let’s see how this worked out.

Will start with the AFC East. Here’s what I had.

New England 13 -3

Buffalo 12 – 4

New York 8 -8

Miami 6 – 10

Here’s how it really went.

New England 12 – 4; only 1 off.

Buffalo 6 – 10; way off
