How was your Week? 11/09/13

With the World Series over, the baseball off-season starts to heat up. Yesterday on the show, Start of the weekend; Friday Dan the Man and I discussed free agent demands that Ervin Santana and Rickey Nolasco have made. Santana wants a contract worth $100 million and Nolasco is looking for a contract worth $80 million. Now I know this is a down year for free agent pitching but why would a team consider giving either if these pitchers contracts worth anywhere near that amount. Santana made 32 starts last season and had a 9 – 10 record. He pitched 211 innings and had a good ERA 3.24, but does that make him worth a $100 million dollar contract. Nolasco went 13 – 11 overall, but was 8 – 3 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Nolasco made 33 starts and pitched 199 innings total. His ERA with the Dodgers was 3.52, but would that make you want to pay him $80 million dollars over the life of a contract. It will be interesting to see which teams will jump in and negotiation with these two pitchers but I think I’d be very surprised to see either of them get the kind of long-term deals and the kind of money they’re asking for right now. If these two pitchers are worth this kind of money what would a free agent pitcher like Matt Garza would command. Garza is a free agent as well and has always been looked at as a guy with #1 starter type of stuff. I’m not sure the same could be said about either Nolasco or Santana.

The NBA season is getting going and the Indiana Pacers are the only undefeated team at 6 – 0; while the Utah Jazz are the only team that hasn’t picked up a win yet. The Jazz are currently at 0 – 6 as I’m writing this. You’d have to say the biggest surprise to start the NBA season are the 4 – 2 Philadelphia 76ers. While the 76ers may still end up in the draft lottery you can’t say they haven’t gotten off to a surprising start; even getting a win over the Miami Heat. Evan Turner is leading the team in scoring at 22 points a game. While rookie Michael Carter – Williams is averaging 18 points and 7 assists a game. While I’m sure no one is ready to put the 76ers in the NBA finals they are a good story to start the year off.

With the NHL season about a third of the way over the Anaheim Ducks have the most points in the league right now with 29 and lead the Pacific division. The Colorado Avalanche aren’t that far behind with 26 points and are leading the Central division. There is still a long way to go in this NHL season and right now there are 13 teams with 20 points or more and 9 of them are in the Western Conference. The Pittsburgh Penguins Sidney Crosby is leading the league in points with 23 while the St. Louis Blues Alexander Steen leads the league with 14 goals; Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks is the league leader in assists with 17.

Tuesday on the show we talked quite a bit about the Jonathan Martin, Richie Incognito situation with the Miami Dolphins. I don’t want to go into all the details about what has went on with these two Dolphin players and at this points it’s a no win situation for both guys. At this point in time I’m wondering if either Jonathan Martin or Richie Incognito will ever play in the NFL again.

The Boston Red Sox are World Series champions. I have to tell the truth I thought the St. Louis Cardinals would end up winning that series. In game 6 Michael Wacha showed that he was a rookie with very limited playoff experience. I thought that the Cardinals would break out and start hitting, but the Red Sox pitching shut them down. John Lackey had a big comeback season and series. Lackey has clinched 2 World series for 2 different teams. As a rookie Lackey got the win in the World Series clinching game for the Angels. I don’t know if they where being called The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim yet or if they where still the California Angeles. Sorry I got a little side tracked there. David Ortiz was the M.V.P. of the World Series; while some experts where pushing for Clay Bucholtz to win the award. I believe they made the right choice as Ortiz put up numbers that only 2 people have done better than in a World Series. After the way Ortiz played in the World Series and with winning the M.V.P., talk started on if he will make the baseball Hall of Fame when his career is over. I don’t really know where I stand on this but I’ve heard everything from he’ll be a first ballot hall of famer to he won’t get in because he didn’t play defense. The Red Sox went from worst to first and now the talk starts on if they’ll repeat in 2014.

So which one of you had the Miami Heat starting the season 1 – 2. I know it’s very early in the season but I’m a little surprised the Heat have dropped 2 consecutive games. I really thought the Heat might struggle opening night against the Chicago Bulls but they handled the Bulls easily 107 – 95. They turned around the next night and lost to the Philadelphia 76ers 114 – 110 and then last night lost to the Brooklyn Nets 101 – 100. Now I don’t think anyone would be surprised if at the end of the playoffs in 2014 the Heat are raising the trophy again. It just shows how odd and long the NBA season can be.

Every Sunday morning Dan the Man, Mr. Fantasy and I make are picks for that weeks NFL games and have we had a rough year. We finally had a better week in Week 8. Dan the Man and I where 9 – 3 while Mr. Fantasy went 8 – 4. For the season Dan the Man and I are 70 – 42 while Mr. Fantasy is trailing at 65 – 48. It just seems like it’s been a tough year for us to pick games. We’ll be on Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. to make our picks again and talk about the week in fantasy football. I guess will see how this week goes for us.

How was your Week 10/26/13

On Friday’s show Dan the Man and I discussed some fantasy football issues and I thought you’d get a kick out of a situation I found one of my teams in this week. Myself, Mr. Fantasy and Dan the Man are in 2, 20team leagues together. One of the things I like to do is join another random league that has their draft before yours. I found a 14 team league that was having their draft before ours, so I joined. I was on a good run in this league as my team was undefeated through Week 6 but Week 7 turned out to be my first loss and the remainder of the season may be rough for me. Jay Cutler was my #1 quarterback and he hurt his groin and is expected to miss about a month. My other quarterback was Sam Bradford who torn his ACL and is out for the season. Doug Martin was one of my starting running backs, he has a torn labrum and is out anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. Reggie Wayne was my top wide receiver, he torn his ACL and is out for the season. Jermichael Finley was the starting tight end on this team. He took a hit and suffered a bruised spinal column. There’s no time-table for Finley’s return and his injury may be career threatening. Just to add insult to my injuries we have defensive players in this league and my 2 linebackers are Lance Briggs; who is out 4 to 6 weeks with a shoulder injury . My other linebacker was Brian Cushing, who broke a leg and tore his LCL ligament. I’ve played fantasy football for many seasons now and I’ve never seen so many of my players get injured in the same week. I guess it’s just a string of bad luck.

Tonight is the Sports Time Radio fantasy basketball draft. This is the first time we’ve done a fantasy basketball league. It is set up to be an auction draft, so that always add to the draft. The question is how much is someone willing to pay for the top players in the NBA. I’d have to guess that LeBron James and Kevin Durant will garner the highest bids. Of course since we are based in the Chicago area the Chicago Bulls players always go for more money than what the average price is. Dan the Man and Mr. fantasy prefer the auction style draft where I am a fan of the snake style draft we’ve also used. Either way it should be a good time, but the auction drafts do take some time to do.

The Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals are tied at 1 game apiece with the World Series headed to St. Louis for the next 3 games. While I am a big baseball fan and I enjoy watching the World Series what has interested me is the Cardinals pitching staff. Michael Wacha is 22, Trevor Rosenthal is 21, Carlos Martinez is 21 and Shelby Miller who I don’t believe has pitched in the playoffs for St. Louis is 22. This has to put the rest of the National League Central on notice with young pitching like this. Not to mention staff ace Adam Wainwright is 33 years old. With a pitching staff like that St. Louis could dominate their division and make playoff appearance after playoff appearance.

John Scott of the Buffalo Sabres was suspended indefinitely by the NHL for his hit on the Boston Bruins Loui Eriksson. Scott is what NHL teams might call and enforcer but fans would call a goon. Scott went after Phil Kessel in the exhibition season as well. This resulted in David Clarkson coming in to protect Kessel and getting a 10 game suspension. Scott has one career goal, so you know what he’s on the ice for. With concussion issues at the forefront of every major sport is there a place in the NHL for a player with Scott’s skill set? While Eriksson’s injury happened because of a late check it also brings up the issue, is it time for the NHL to ban fighting?

How was your Week? 10/19/13

The St. Louis Cardinals are headed to the World series after a 9 – 0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers last night. St. Louis won the National League championship series 4-2, to advance to the World Series. Michael Wacha pitched 7 shutout innings striking out 5 and giving up 2 hits. Wacha was named the MVP in the series. In an interesting note, the Cardinals picked Wacha with the compensation draft pick they got when Albert Pujols signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. It looked like the Dodgers where in a good position to get even in the series with Clayton Kershaw starting Game 6 for them. Kershaw went 4 innings giving up 10 hits and 7 runs. The Cardinals now wait for the winner of the Boston Red Sox/Detroit Tigers series. The Red Sox are up 3 games to 2 in the series. Boston has a chance to close out the series tonight; starting pitchers are Clay Buchholz for the Red Sox facing Max Scherzer for the Tigers. Even down a game Detroit looks like they might have an advantage in this pitching match up and if the series goes to a seventh game they have Justin Verlander ready to start a game 7. Of course just like last night; they have to play the game on the field.

I’m not sure how many people have noticed, but the NHL season has gotten underway. Early on the San Jose Sharks are the only undefeated team at 6 – 0. There are 4, 1 loss teams, the Pittsburgh Penguins, St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche and the Anaheim Ducks. Of course it’s very early in the season but it’s nice to talk a little hockey. To no real surprise Sidney Crosby is leading the league with 14 points right now. It seems like the start of the season snuck up on me and sadly I didn’t even have time to set up the Sports Time radio fantasy hockey league. Hopefully it will be something will be able to play in next season.

Tom Powers a writer for the St. Paul Pioneer Press wrote an article suggesting the Minnesota Vikings trade Adrian Petersen. Mr. Fantasy and I covered a little of this story on Friday’s show and it’s an interesting idea. Would the Vikings trade Petersen if they got the same kind of deal they got when they traded Herschel Walker to the Dallas Cowboys. Or how about the trade the Miami Dolphins made to draft Rickey Williams. I’d be shocked if this trade ever happened or has ever been talked about by the Vikings.Petersen is going to end up being the best player in Vikings history as long as he stays healthy. With the way draft picks are paid now teams are more likely to hang on to those 1st round draft picks. That’s why the Trent Richardson trade was a bit of a surprise. It’s fun to consider the possibility of your favorite team trading for Petersen, but I doubt he’ll be playing anywhere except for Minnesota. What should your favorite team give in a trade for Adrian Petersen?

The NBA season is getting ready to start at the end of this month. The big question in and around the Chicago area where myself, Dan the Man and Mr. Fantasy are from, is what will Derrick Rose play like. He had some swelling in his surgically repaired knee after a plane ride to Brazil. He did come back and score 32 points last night in pre-season action against the Indiana Pacers last night. He has looked like he might return back to the form that made him an M.V.P. a couple of seasons ago. You have to wonder if the Chicago Bulls will manage Rose’s minutes early in the season to make sure that swelling or any other knee issues don’t occur. Even with Rose I’m not sure the Bulls can get past the Miami Heat in the Eastern conference, but their chances are better with him on the court.

9/28/13 How was your Week?

With a couple of games left in the regular season for major league baseball there is still 1 playoff spot that needs to be decided. The Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers are all playing for that 1 remaining playoff spot. We talked about how a tiebreaker would go on Fridays show if all 3 teams ended up with the same record. I got it really wrong on the air but I believe this is how a 3 way tie would work out. Tampa Bay would play at Cleveland; the winner gets a wild card spot and the loser would go to Texas to play the Rangers the next day with the winner of that game getting the second wild card spot. If these teams did end up tied either Tampa bay or Cleveland could end up playing 164 games this season. Of course this all goes away if Tampa Bay and Cleveland win today (Saturday) and Texas loses. The St. Louis cardinals clinched the National League Central last night (Friday) beating the Chicago Cubs 6 – 0. The National League wild card spots go to the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds. The game looks like it will be played in Pittsburgh and will have Francisco Liriano starting for the Pirates and Mat Latos taking the mound for the Reds.

Bud Selig has announced that he will be retiring from his role as commissioner of baseball following next season. Now Selig has made this type of announcement before and was talked into staying by the owners. This time it looks like Selig will walk away but there is another season to go. Everyone has an opinion on who should be the one to take Selig’s place. I’m just like everyone else and I think the next commissioner of baseball should be Cal Ripken Jr. Ripken Jr. just kind of embodies the game of baseball to me. He was a Hall of Fame player who played every single day. Who’s your choice to replace Bud Selig?

Mariano Rivera played his last game in Yankee stadium this week. I enjoyed the way the Yankees came out and removed Rivera from the game. Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter made the trip to the mound to take Rivera out of the game. It took a minute or two before Rivera broke down and started to cry while hugging Pettitte first and then Jeter. A point came up after this that Rivera would like to play centerfield. Now I’ve heard some reports rip Rivera and the Yankees for this and I don’t understand why. The Yankees aren’t in the playoff race and there playing the Houston Astros this weekend; who also aren’t in the playoff race. If he went out and played just 1 inning in centerfield would it tarnish his career. I don’t think so. Not only do I hope Joe Giradi and the Yankees let Rivera play centerfield, I hope he gets the opportunity to catch a fly ball.

I know it’s a lot of baseball this week, but it is playoff time. The NFL is in Week 4 and college football is in Week 5. Did you have the New York Giants at 0 – 3? Two long time major league baseball players announced their retirement this week. Colorado Rockies 1st base man Todd Helton and New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte are planning to call it a career at the end of this season. Helton was a 1st round pick of the Rockies; 8th overall in 1995. He made his debut August 2nd 1997 and has only played for Colorado for his entire career. He has over 2500 hits and is a lifetime .316 hitter. Andy Pettitte was drafted by the Yankees in the 22nd round of the 1990 amateur draft. Pettitte made his debut for the Yankees April 29th 1995. Pettitte has won 5 world series championships with the Yankees and has a 19 – 11 post season record. Pettitte spent 3 years pitching for the Houston Astros (2004 – 2006) before returning to the Yankees. Pettitte has over 250 career wins as well. This brought up the question on Friday’s show, will Helton and Pettitte get into the Hall of Fame? I heard one baseball expert say he thinks Pettitte will get into the Hall of Fame but it will take 10 plus years for him to be voted in. On the other hand this expert didn’t see Helton making the Hall of Fame. Sadly I watch way to much sports on television and I can’t remember which baseball expert made these comments.

We started Friday’s show by talking about the situation that NASCAR driver Martin Truex Jr. has found himself in. As you know Truex originally qualified for the Sprint Cup Chase but was knocked out when he was penalized 50 points for teammate Clint Bowyer spinning out and attempting to fix the outcome of a race. Yesterday NAPA announced that they where leaving Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) and would take their sponsorship elsewhere. If your Truex Jr., are you wondering what you did? Truex didn’t spin. It was Bowyer and it cost Truex Jr. his spot in the Chase. From all reports Truex Jr. had nothing to do with Bowyer spinning and affecting the outcome of a race but it cost him 50 points. Now he’s losing his sponsor and might end up leaving MWR. Truex Jr. did say “I’d always hoped that I’d be at Michael Waltrip Racing for a long, long time,” adding “That really hasn’t changed. But it’s a lot more confusing at the moment.” I guess we’ll see if someone will sponsor Truex Jr. next season or if he ends up leaving MWR for another ride.

Sunday mornings from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Blog Talk Radio Dan the Man, Mr. Fantasy and I are previewing the NFL games and offering as much fantasy advice as we can. The 2 hours goes very quickly and we try to get as much in as we can. Tomorrows show, Sports Time Radio’s Pregame Show, if you’d like to listen to us. On the show we almost pick who’s going to win the games. Here are last weeks results: Dan the Man was 10 – 5 while both Mr. Fantasy and I went 12 – 3. After 2 weeks of picks Dan the Man is 19 – 1, while Mr. Fantasy and I are both at 22 – 7 overall.

It looks like “The Bet” is going to be settled in the playoffs. If you’ve been listening to the show since the start of the baseball season then you know about “The Bet. ” Dan the Man picked the Los Angles Dodgers to win the World Series while Mr. Fantasy said they wouldn’t even be the 3rd best team in California. As the season went on, “The Bet” was amended from the best record to who goes the farthest in the playoffs. It’s a 2 team race now. The Dodgers clinched the Thursday night and it looks like Mr. Fantasy’s team is going to be the Oakland A’s. The A’s should wrap up the American League West shortly as the Texas Rangers have fallen out of the race and may not even get a wild card spot. What does the winner of “The Bet,” you ask? Well the loser has to buy the winner a brand new New Era 5950 fitted hat.

We haven’t spent a lot of time talking about it on the show but the NHL preseason has started, so hockey is just right around the corner. The regular season starts October 1st with these 3 games. The Toronto Maple Leafs vs. the Montreal Canadians; the Winnipeg Jets vs. the Edmonton Oilers and the defending Stanley Cup champions the Chicago Blackhawks vs. the Washington Capitals.

The Chase for the Sprint Cup starts Sunday in Joliet Illinois. On a side note the track isn’t to far from where Dan the Man lives but sadly he’s not going to the race. NASCAR added Jeff Gordon as the 13th driver to the Chase; there are normally only 12. Gordon was added because of some controversies between Joey Logano and David Gilliland. It seems as if Gilliland was going to give Logano a position on the race track that would’ve allowed Logano to qualify for the Chase; knocking Gordon out. There was also the issue earlier in the week with Michael Waltrip Racing (M.R.I.). Clint Bowyer (Dan the Man’s favorite driver) spun towards the end of the race with Ryan Newman leading. The caution flag came out and after pit stops Bowyer’s teammate Martin Truex Jr. was ahead of Newman and at the end of the race was one of the 12 drivers who made the Chase for the Sprint Cup. After the race NASCAR reviewed the radio communication between Bowyer and his pit crew and it was decided that Bowyer’s spin was intentional; so Truex would have a chance to get into the Chase. All three M. R. I. drivers (Bowyer, Truex and Brian Vickers) were penalized 50 points and put on probation. The penalty knocked Truex out of the Chase and gave Newman the last spot in the Chase. Gordon was also in the running for a spot in the Chase when all this stuff went on and after a review of the Logano/Gilliland situation Gordon was added as the 13th driver in the Chase. I think NASCAR handled the situation correctly and Gordon should’ve been allowed to compete for the championship. Once the Chase gets started a lot of these issues will go away and they’ll be back to racing.

The National League wild card race seems to be heating up and every expert I’ve heard talk about it is on the Washington Nationals band wagon. I believe the Nationals where 5 games behind the Cincinnati Reds coming into play today (Saturday). 5 games are a lot to make up with just about 15 games to go, but they’ve been the hottest team all month and have given themselves a chance. The American League wild card is an even bigger mess. It looks like either the Texas Rangers or the Oakland A’s will take one of the wild card spots, but the second spot is up for grab. You could take 4 or 5 teams and throw their name in a hat for that second spot. The Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and even the Kansas City Royals are trying to find a way to take the second wild card spot. It should make the final couple of weeks of the baseball season fun to watch.

We’re doing an NFL preview show on Sunday mornings from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. central standard time. You can find it on Blog Talk Radio and the name of the show is NFL Preview Week 2. Just like last season we;re making picks on the games and last week went like this; Mr. Fantasy and I went 10 – 5 and Dan the Man was 9 – 6. Week 2 started Thursday night with the New England Patriots beating the New York Jets 13 – 10. If you want to know if we think your favorite team will win listen in. Will also talk about injuries, fantasy advise and anything else we think of that might affect the game.

We don’t talk a lot about the PGA tour on the show, but last night (Friday) I had to mentioned that Jim Furyk shot a 59 Friday at the BMW championship in Lake Forest Illinois. This is the 6th time in PGA history that a 59 has been carded. Furyk need a birdie on the 18th hole to get to 59 and he hit his second shot out of the fairway to just a few feet of the hole. Of course he made the putt to get around in 59. It’s not a huge sports topic but I thought it was something that deserves mentioning.

How was your Week (9/7/13)

Again I have to start this week out with apologizing for Friday’s show. More issues came up during the show and I know their where some problems listening to us on BlogTalkRadio.com and i am very sorry for these problems and hopefully when next Friday rolls around the problems will be worked out.

At the start of Friday’s show I mentioned I had read a couple of articles about the Chicago White Sox. Since Dan was off Friday Mr. Fantasy filled in for the entire show and the White Sox are his favorite baseball team. The articles talked about Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko retiring after this season. I’d be shocked to see Dunn retire, since he still has money left on that big free agent contract he signed with the White Sox. Konerko has had a solid career but I could see him retiring. It’s a lot like rebuilding without selling off your pieces. With the season the White Sox have had it might be good for the team to start looking for younger players to build around. Dunn has pretty much been a bust for the White Sox since they signed him. While he’s put up big home run numbers they don’t make up for low batting average. Dunn seems to struggle every season to stay about .200 and it’s tough to win with that kind of hitter in your line up. There’s still a few weeks left in the regular season, so will see what these two players decide to do with their careers.

The NFL season started on Thursday with the Denver Broncos beating the Baltimore Ravens 49 – 27. Peyton Manning threw for 462 yards and seven touchdowns. So every Peyton Manning fantasy owner was thrilled on Friday when they saw his stats. The rest of the teams are in action Sunday and week 1 wraps up Monday night with a doubleheader. I’m not going to go through all the match ups here as we starting a NFL preview Sunday morning show at 10:00 a.m. on Blog Talk Radio. The show is simply titled NFL preview week 1 if you’d like to listen.

We never had a chance to discuss this on the show but there was a huge deal made in the media about a fight at Philadelphia Eagles practice between cornerback Cary Williams and wide receiver Riley Cooper. Fights happen all the time at NFL training camps and practices, so you’re wondering why this one made news. Well as you know Cooper had a video released in the summer of him using a racial slur at a concert and Williams is a black man. In all the accounts I’ve read of this altercation Williams was the one who used the racial slur during the fight and it had nothing to do with what Cooper said in that video. It was just two players who had a fight at practice but since Cooper was involved it became a big media event. It’s sad that the media is going to try to turn everything Cooper does into a racial issue when it’s just a football play.

Once again we here at Sports Time radio try to predict what will happen this coming NFL season. Dan the Man, Mr. Fantasy, Schaumburg Stu and I all made picks on what we think is going to happen.

Let’s start close to our homes with the NFC North.

Stu has 1st Green Bay 2nd Minnesota 3rd Chicago 4th Detroit

Mr. Fantasy has Green Bay winning the division at 11 – 5.

While Dan the Man has Minnesota winning the NFC North.

I have 1st Green Bay (11 – 5) 2nd Minnesota (8 – 8) 3rd Chicago (7 – 9) 4th Detroit (7 -9)

NFC South

Stu 1st Atlanta 2nd New Orleans 3rd Tampa Bay 4th Carolina

Mr. Fantasy has Atlanta (12 – 4)

I have 1st Atlanta (9 – 7) 2nd New Orleans (9 – 7) 3rd Carolina ( 7 – 9) 4th Tampa Bay (4 – 12)

NFC East

Stu 1st Washington 2nd New York Giants 3rd Philadelphia 4th Dallas

Mr. Fantasy has Dallas (10 – 6) and Dan has the New York Giants

I have 1st Dallas (9 – 7) 2nd Washington (8 – 8) 3rd New York Giants (8 – 8) 4th Philadelphia (7 – 9)

NFC West

Stu 1st Seattle 2nd San Francisco 3rd St. Louis 4th Arizona

Mr. Fantasy has Seattle (10 – 6) and Dan has Seattle also.

I have 1st Seattle (11 – 5) 2nd San Francisco (10 – 6) 3rd St. Louis (6 – 10) 4th Arizona (6 – 10)

Playoffs

Stu has Green Bay going to the Super Bowl out of the NFC.

Mr. Fantasy has Chicago (wild card) over Dallas in round one also Seattle over San Francisco (wild card). Then Atlanta over Chicago and Green Bay over Seattle in the next round. Atlanta over Green Bay to advance to the Super Bowl.

Dan has Chicago (wild card) over Minnesota, Seattle over Washington (wild card) in round one. Then New Orleans over Chicago and Seattle over New York Giants and New Orleans over Seattle to go to the Super Bowl.

I have New Orleans (wild card) over Dallas and San Francisco (wild card) over Atlanta in the first round. Then Seattle over New Orleans and San Francisco over Green Bay with Seattle beating San Francisco to go to the Super Bowl.

In the AFC North

Schaumburg Stu has 1st Cincinnati 2nd Baltimore 3rd Pittsburgh 4th Cleveland

Mr. Fantasy has Cincinnati at 10 – 6 winning the division. Dan the Man has Baltimore winning the North.

I have 1st Cincinnati (9 – 7) 2nd Baltimore (8 – 8) 3rd Pittsburgh (7 – 9) 4th Cleveland (4 – 12)

AFC South

Stu 1st Houston 2nd Tennessee 3rd Indianapolis 4th Jacksonville

Mr. Fantasy Houston 1st at 11 – 5 Dan has Houston also.

Mr. Fantasy has Denver at 11 – 5 in 1st, Dan also has Denver winning the West.

I have 1st Denver (13 – 3) 2nd Kansas City (7 – 9) 3rd San Diego (4 – 12) 4th Oakland (3 – 13)

Playoffs

Stu has Denver winning the AFC and going to the Super Bowl.

Mr Fantasy has Baltimore (wild card) over Cincinnati and Houston over Kansas City (wild card) in the 1st round. Then Denver over Houston and New England over Baltimore. Denver beats New England to advance to the Super Bowl from the AFC.

Dan has New England over Cincinnati (wild card) and Baltimore over Indianapolis (wild card) in the 1st round. Then Denver over New England and Houston over Baltimore in round two with Denver beating Houston to go to the Super Bowl from the AFC.

I have Indianapolis (wild card) over Cincinnati and Houston over Baltimore (wild card) in round one. Denver over Indianapolis and New England over Houston with New England beating Denver to go to the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl

Stu: Green Bay over Denver

Mr. Fantasy: Denver over Atlanta

Dan: Denver over New Orleans

I have Seattle over New England. Place your bets but the way we pick, probably not on us.

We also handed out some awards while we where at it. Schaumburg Stu picked Matt Ryan as his NFC offensive MVP and Peyton Manning as AFC offensive MVP. Defensive MVP Stu has Ndamukong Suh in the NFC and J. J. Watt in the AFC. I didn’t get an NFC offensive Rookie of the Year (RoY) from Stu, but he did pick Deandre Hopkins & Tyler Eifert in the AFC. His defensive RoY’s are Jon Bostic in the NFC and Manti’ Teo in the AFC. Stu’s coach of the year is Marc Trestman.

Mr. Fantasy’s awards MVP’s on offense Peyton Manning, on defense Richard Sherman. Rookie of the Year NFC Tyrann Mathieu, AFC Giovani Bernard and his coach of the year is Andy Reid.

Dan the Man picked Adrian Peterson as offensive MVP and Julius Peppers as defensive MVP. His rookie of the years are Giovani Bernard on offense and Manti’ Teo on defense.

I went with Aaron Rodgers in the NFC and Tom Brady in the AFC as offensive MVP’s. On defense I picked DeMarcus Ware in the NFC and Brian Cushing in the AFC as defensive MVP’s. Rookie of the year on offense. In the NFC I picked Cordarrelle Patterson in the NFC and Kembrell Thompkins in the AFC. Rookie of the Year for defense I picked Desmond Trufant in the NFC and D.J. Hayden in the AFC. My coach of the year is Pete Carroll. Let’s see how these play out for us.

8/31/13 How was your Week?

I want to start out this week by apologizing for last night’s (Friday’s) show. We had a ton of technical difficulties and ended up having the show get cut off five minutes early then we where suppose to. We didn’t get to our 9:00 p.m. live show ending and didn’t get to do our fifteen minute over run. I don’t know if it was the weather or the web site that where causing our issues but it was a rough night and I want to apologize to our listeners.

Schaumburg Stu filled in for Dan the Man on Wednesday night and we ended up talking quite a bit about professional wrestling. I started watching professional wrestling in the 1970’s and Schaumburg Stu started watching before I did. I think he’s been a wrestling fan since the late 1940’s or early 1950’s. Sadly neither of us are big fans of the new style of pro wrestling. Through the years Stu and I have seen some of the greatest pro wrestlers to ever step foot in the ring and the crop of guys wrestling right now don’t seem to be in that class. I don’t know if it’s the style they’re taught or how they’re booked but the sport just doesn’t seem the same to me. It seems like every time I turn on a wrestling show, I seem to end up watching a lot of promos and backstage skits instead of actually in ring wrestling. Stu and I have talked about if wrestling will ever go back to the style he and I used to really enjoy. Sadly, neither of us see this happening.

On Friday’s show, Mr. Fantasy filled in for Dan the Man. Dan went to the Kid Rock/ZZ Top concert, so I let him have the night off. We where trying to cover as many fantasy football topics as we could. We have fantasy drafts tonight (Saturday) and another one tomorrow night (Sunday); so we’re going to be busy. Adrian Petersen seems to be the consensus #1 pick but pretty much after that it’s wide open. Every expert seems to say that running backs will go early and often and that you can wait on a picking a quarterback. I guess we’ll see who I end up with this season. Either way, it’s always fun.

The NCAA wrapped up their investigation of Johnny Manziel and suspended him. Manziel won’t play the first half of Texas A & M’s game today (Saturday) against Rice. It doesn’t seem like much of a punishment and Manziel lawyer released a statement saying Manziel only took the suspension to “get back on the field”. When this story first broke I caught part of an interview a legal expert gave one of the many sports shows out there. He mentioned that the NCAA was going to have a difficult time proving that Manziel did what he was accused of. I’m sorry that I can’t remember this legal experts name because he was right on the money with his statement. I’ve had a lot of my Facebook friends cry about the fact that Manziel will only miss half of a game. They seem to forget that you can’t suspend him for what you think he did but what you can prove. Would I be surprised if Johnny Manziel took money for his autograph; no I wouldn’t be. Can the NCAA prove that he took money for his autograph; NO they can’t. Manziel is an exciting college football player and hopefully his name will just be associated with Texas A & M football for the rest of the season.

The St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates have back to back weekend series. Pittsburgh won the first game last night (Friday) 5 – 0. Francisco Lirano pitched eight shutout inning for the Pirates in last nights victory. Today’s pitching match up Lance Lynn for St. Louis against A. J. Burnett for Pittsburgh. If either team can take advantage of these series they could win the National League central. As long as neither team collapses they should both make the playoffs but you’d rather win the division than have to play the one game wild card playoff game.
