Another post season extra innings game for the Kansas City Royals is another Royals win. Last night the AL championship series got started last night (Friday) in Baltimore. The Royals broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the 10 inning with a solo home run by Alex Gordon off of Orioles reliever Darren O’Day. Also in the 10th Mike Moustakas added a 2 run home run off of the Orioles Brian Matusz. The Baltimore Orioles were able to get just 1 run back in the bottom of the 10th off of Royals closer Greg Holland, but that wasn’t enough, as the Royals take Game 1, 8-6. If you would’ve told me that the Royals would hit 3 home runs and the Orioles would steal 2 bases I would’ve thought that you had the teams backwards. Alcides Escobar hit the 1st home run for the Royals in the top of the 3rd inning to give them their first run and a 1-0 lead. Gordon doubled with the bases loaded to put the Royals up 4-0. Adam Jones got 1 run back for the Orioles singling in the bottom of the 3rd to make it 4-1. Billy Butler hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 5th for a 5-1 Kansas City lead. The Orioles got 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th; 1 on a Nelson Cruz double and then 2 runs on a Ryan Flaherty single to cut the lead to 5-4. The Orioles tied the game up at 5-5 in the bottom of the 6th inning on an Alejandro De Aza infield single. The game stayed that way (5-5) until the 10th inning. I’m not sure that either team got the effort they thought would get out of their starting pitchers. Chris Tillman lasted just 4 1/3rd innings for Baltimore while James Shields lasted just 5 full innings for Kansas City. These are two teams with very good bullpens, but in Game 1 both Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis pitched 2 innings for the Royals. You have to wonder if they would go to either guy today. It’s an afternoon game for these teams today with Yordano Ventura and Bud Norris listed as the starting pitchers for each team. The later game is the San Francisco Giants against the St. Louis Cardinals as the National League championship series gets started in St.Louis. Madison Bumgarner is the Game 1 starter for the Giants while Adam Wainwright starts for the Cardinals. If you’re looking for the games on television. The Royals/Orioles game is on TBS while the Giants/Cardinals is on Fox.

It didn’t start off that way, but the critics finally got their close Thursday night football game. The Indianapolis Colts beat the Houston Texans 33-28. The Colts jumped out to a 24-0 lead and it looked like your typical Thursday night blow out. Andrew Luck threw two touchdown passes in the 1st quarter. One to Ahmad Bradshaw and one to Coby Fleener along with a Trent Richardson touchdown run and an Adam Vinatieri all in the 1st quarter gave the Colts that 24-0 lead. The Texans added the next two touchdowns a Ryan Fitzpatrick to Andre Johnson 4 yard pass and an Arian Foster 12 yard run. Vinatieri add a field goal before halftime and the Colts went in with a 27-14 lead. Houston struck first in the 3rd quarter with Foster 2nd touchdown run. This time 2 yard run. Luck cane back and found T.Y. Hilton on a 33 yard pass for the Colts last score. J.J. Watt scored on a 45 yard return of a fumble for the last points of the night. The Texans had some chances in the 4th quarter, but a Johnson fumble ended one drive and a Fitzpatrick fumble ended their last drive and the game.

On the fantasy side of the game Luck put up good numbers for you going 25 of 44 for 370 yards and 3 touchdowns. Luck did throw an interception and fumbled once. Hilton was another big fantasy guy with 9 catches for 223 yards and a touchdown. Bradshaw had 34 yards rushing and 25 yards receiving with a touchdown. Fleener only had 2 catches, but with one being for a touchdown that will look good among tight ends. Indianapolis other tight end Dwayne Allen had 3 catches for 49 yards, but didn’t get into the end zone. Again though he should give you solid numbers for a tight end. Foster was the big fantasy guy for the Texans with 109 yards rushing and those two touchdowns. He also added 3 receptions for 32 yards just for a few extra points. Johnson also had a good night with 7 catches for 99 yards and a touchdown. If your league scores for individual defensive players Houston safety Kendrick Lewis had 10 tackles with 6 of them being solo tackles and of course there’s Watt who not only had the fumble return for a touchdown, but added 2 sacks, 3 tackles for loss and 4 quarterback hits. That won’t be a bad fantasy night for a defensive player of your league scores them. While we’re on the fantasy side of football a couple of big players may be out this week. I saw a report that said Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green will not play tomorrow. because of a toe injury. Also Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson is being listed as doubtful because of that ankle injury he’s been dealing with for a few games now. Make sure to check your injury status on these two guys before you set that fantasy line up.

The NHL season got under way on Wednesday night with four games and every team has taken the ice for the 2014-15 season. The Montreal Canadiens Tomas Plekanec, the Anaheim Ducks Corey Perry and Mason Raymond of the Calgary Flames got off to quick starts for their teams scoring 3 goals in these first few games. I know, I know each team has only played two games at the most, but sometimes a hot start for a player can continue though a season. There is a full slate of games tonight and it looks like all of them will be covered by their local broadcast teams. For me that means the Chicago Blackhawks open at home tonight against the Buffalo Sabres.

We have a Sports Time Radio fantasy basketball league set up. If you’re interested in playing e-mail us sportstimeradio@hotmail.com and I’ll send you the link to sign up. It’s free and we run it through Yahoo’s fantasy sports site. So if you’re a fan of the NBA get in contact with us and sign up.

It may be the 1st day of October, but September went out with one of the most exciting MLB playoff games that I can remember. The American League wild card game had the Kansas City Royals finding ways to come back time after time against the Oakland A’s. The Royals scored 2 run in the bottom of the 12th inning to get a 9-8 victory and advance to face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the divisional playoff series. Salvador Perez’s only hit was the game winner in the bottom of the 12th and reliever Jason Frasor picked up the win as the 6th Royals pitcher to come out of their bullpen. While both starter Jon Lester for Oakland and James Shields for Kansas City will get big money free agent contracts this off-season neither guy pitched like the staff ace that he had been during the season. Lester hung around for 7 1/3rd innings giving up 6 runs on 8 hits while striking out 5 and walking 2. Shields only pitched 5 innings for the Royals; he gave up 4 runs on 5 hits while striking out 6, walking 2 and giving up 1 home run. The Royals had 7 stolen bases in the game and Christian Colon’s in the 12th inning set him up to score the winning run on Perez’s single. Let’s hope tonight’s National League wild card game is just as exciting. The San Francisco Giants are starting left hander Madison Bumgarner who was 18-10 during the regular season. While the Pittsburgh Pirates send right hander Edinson Volquez to the mound. Volquez was 13-7 in the regular season. The Pirates line up is already up and I was surprised to see Gaby Sanchez getting the start at 1st base and Travis Snider making the start in rightfield. I’d like to bill this game as a battle of the last two National League MVP winners; Buster Posey for the Giants and Andrew McCutchen for the Pirates.

Well our Week 4 NFL picks weren’t that great. Schaumburg Stu and Mr. Fantasy tied for the winning record at 7-6. There’s a quote Schaumburg Stu and I use all the time. It’s from professional wrestling legend Buddy Rogers. In an interview he said “They don’t ask you how you won; they ask you if you won”. Hopefully I got that right; if not Schaumburg Stu will straighten me out. Dan the Man and I finished Week for with 6-7 records. For the season Dan the Man is still holding the lead at 35-26, Mr. Fantasy is just 1 game behind at 34-27 while Schaumburg Stu and I are tied at the bottom with a 32-29 record. Let’s hope Week 5 draws out some better records from us.

Let’s see how Mr. Fantasy did with his individual player picks for fantasy high scorers at each position for Week 4. He went with San Diego Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers to be the high scorer at that position. Rivers had a good week, but finished 6th among quarterbacks. It was Eli Manning who was the highest scoring quarterback last week. At the running back spot Mr. Fantasy choose DeMarco Murray as his high scorer. Murray finished 3rd among running backs for Week 4 as he was beat out by Matt Asiata of the Minnesota Vikings who finished 2nd and Jamaal Charles of the Kansas City Chiefs who bounced back from injury to be the highest scoring running back of Week 4. At wide Receiver Mr. Fantasy went with Antonio Brown of the Pittsburgh Steelers as his high scorer. Brown finished 2nd at wide receiver in Week 4 being beat out by only Steve Smith Sr. of the Baltimore Ravens. We use the Yahoo scoring system for our leagues and Smith beat out Brown by .46; so Mr. Fantasy missed by not even half of a point. At tight end this week since Larry Donnell put up such big numbers during the Thursday night football game we went with the 2nd highest scoring tight end in Week 4. Mr. Fantasy went with Jimmy Graham of the New Orleans Saints. Graham was the 3rd highest scoring tight end in Week 4. Donnell was #1 like we thought he would be. Heath Miller of the Pittsburgh Steelers was the tight end that slipped in and took 2nd place for Week 4. Another close call for Mr. Fantasy as Miller outscored J. Graham by .65 of a point. At kicker Mr. fantasy went with another New Orleans Saints player; Shayne Graham. This Graham didn’t do as well for Mr. fantasy as S. Graham finished as the 19th highest scoring kicker of the week. The highest scoring kicker for Week 4 was Blair Walsh of the Minnesota Vikings. For his sleeper pick of Week 4 Mr. Fantasy went with Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater was making his 1st NFL start after coming in to finish the Week 3 game for the injured Matt Cassell. Bridgewater himself got injured in the Vikings 41-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Even with the injury Bridgewater finished as the 13th highest scoring quarterback of the week. I’d have to say this was the best week Mr. Fantasy has had making these picks; so will see if he can keep his momentum going for Week 5.

If you’ve listened t the show you know that we’ve put together fantasy leagues for the upcoming NHL and NBA seasons. We still have a few openings in these leagues. If you’re interested in playing in the hockey league with us follow this link https://yho.com/nhl?l=26209&k=5c41b61fd37e5a63 and sign up. If basketball is more your cup of tea use this link https://yho.com/nba?l=23729&k=78c34b583aa08608 to sign up. Dan the Man and I will be in both of these leagues, but Mr. fantasy is just going to play in the basketball league.

The other game, I have Dan the Man and Mr. Fantasy playing against each other is picking the winners of the MLB playoff games. I’ll also throw in one other thing to pick. I’m scoring it with 2 points for a correct pick and -1 points for a negative selection. Last nights 2nd question was; who would be the winning pitcher. They could’ve picked any pitcher on the teams roster; not just the starting pitcher. After the 1st wild card game Dan the Man has the lead 1 to -2. Dan the Man had the Royals to win the game and James Shields to get the win. While Mr. Fantasy went with the A’s to win the game and Jon Lester to be the winning pitcher. In about an hour an a half (5:00 p.m. CST) they’ll pick tonight’s game between the Pirates and the Giants; they’ll also have to predict who will get more hits Andrew McCutchen or Buster Posey. They are allowed to make the same picks.

Let’s call this.

I remember last season hearing people complain that they didn’t like the match ups the National Football League (NFL) was showcasing on Thursday night football. With the games moving to CBS everyone thought the match ups would be better, but this Thursday night wasn’t one of them. The Atlanta Falcons beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 56-14. The Falcons where up 56-0 before Tampa Bay added a couple of meaningless 4th quarter touchdowns. Dan the Man, Mr, Fantasy and I picked the Falcons to win this game while Schaumburg Stu was alone in selecting a Buccaneers win. Matt Ryan was 21 of 24 in the game for 286 yards and 3 touchdowns before getting the 4th quarter off. Atlanta also ran the football 36 times for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns. Stephen Jackson was the Falcons leading rusher with 54 yards and 1 of the Atlanta rushing touchdowns. Devin Hester and Antone Smith had the other Atlanta rushing touchdowns. In the 2nd quarter with the score already 28-0 there was about 7 minutes before halftime and Tampa Bay was punting. Hester fielded the punt and returned it 62 yards for a touchdown. This was the 20th return touchdown of Hester’s career breaking the record he shared with Deion Sanders. I was a little surprised that Hester’s former coach and now head coach of the Buccaneers even kicked the ball to Hester. I figured since Smith was Hester’s head coach for 19 of his return touchdowns he wouldn’t let the ball get anywhere near him, but they did and Hester took advantage. While watching the game it seemed like Ryan and Julio Jones where just out playing catch, Jones end up with 9 catches for 161 yards and 2 touchdowns. Harry Douglass caught the other touchdown pass from Ryan and when Douglass went down with a foot injury Eric Weems stepped in and add 4 catches for 69 yards. T.J. Yates came in to wrap up for the Falcons and went 3 for 4 in the passing game for 64 yards, but did throw an interception that was returned 27 yards by Danny Lansanah for the final Tampa Bay touchdown. Josh McCown was inured during the game and Mike Glennon came in and play decently for Tampa Bay. Which has to make you wonder of there will be a quarterback controversy. While in the game McCown was 5 for 12 for 58 yards and 1 interception while Glennon went 17 for 24 for 121 yards and 1 touchdown. Bobby Rainey was the leading rusher for Tampa Bay. Rainey had 11 carries for 41 yards, but did fumble twice; Rainey also caught 7 passes for 64 yards. Vincent Jackson caught the Tampa Bay touchdown pass and Brandon Myers added 5 catches for the Buccaneers. Atalanta improved to 2-1 and are on the road against the Minnesota Vikings next week. Tampa Bay dropped to 0-3 and have a Week 4 road game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

We’ve set up fantasy leagues for hockey (NHL) and basketball (NBA) for Sports Time Radio. The league is free and run through the Yahoo sports site. Here’s the link for the hockey league if you’re interested in signing up Sports Time Radio Fantasy League and then here’s the link to the basketball league if that’s what you’d be interested in Sports Time Radio Fantasy League They are both set up in the suction league format with live drafts scheduled. Dan the Man and I will be playing in both leagues while Mr. Fantasy only has time to do the basketball league. Hope you sign up; we’re always looking for new players.

The Kansas City Royals are hosting the Detroit Tigers this weekend in a 3 game series that may decide who wins the American League (A.L.) Central. Detroit won the 1st game Friday night 10-1 behind Justin Verlander. Verlander went 7 1/3rd innings giving up 7 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 4. With the win Verlander improved his record to 14-12. Offensively Ian Kinsler led the way for Detroit going 3 for 5 with a home runs and 3 RBI’s and scored 2 runs. J.D. Martinez went 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored. Tori Hunter, Victor Martinez, Nick Castellanos, James McCann and Eugenio Suarez all added 2 hits. Suarez also added 2 R.B.I.s for the Tigers. Jason Vargas started for the Royals lasting 3 1/3 rd innings giving up 9 hits and 5 earned runs in the loss. With the loss Vargas is 11-10 on the season. Game two is the national telecast on the Fox network and the pitching match is Max Scherzer (16-5) for Detroit and “Big Game” James Shields (14-7) for Kansas City. This is a rematch from a week or two ago and Shields shut down the Tigers and got a big win for the Royals. Can he do it again?

Clayton Kershaw got his 20th win yesterday against the Chicago Cubs Friday at Wrigley Field. Now a lot of pitchers in baseball history have won 20 or more games, but Kershaw is only the 2nd pitcher to win his 20 game in less than 30 starts. Kershaw is 20-3 in 26 starts for the Dodgers this season and is a lock to win the National League (N.L.) Cy Young award for the 2nd time in a row and his 3rd Cy Young in 4 seasons. It wasn’t a dominant outing for Kershaw as he went 5 innings giving up 7 hits and 3 earned runs, but did strikeout 9 hitters in a 14-5 Dodgers victory. Just to let you know Pedro Martinez is the only other pitcher since World War II with 20 wins in fewer than 30 starts. Kershaw is also the first Dodgers pitcher to reach the 20-win mark twice since Claude Osteen in 1969 and ’72. At 20-3 (.870), Kershaw has the best winning percentage for a Dodgers pitcher since Preacher Roe went 22-3 (.880) in 1951. Kershaw’s ERA is 1.80.

On Thursday night the Baltimore Ravens beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 26-6. With the way the game started it didn’t look like it would end in a 20 Ravens victory, but every time the Steelers got a drive going there would be a turnover that ended that drive. On the opening drive of the game Pittsburgh was moving the ball well and looked like they would end up with some type of points out of the drive. That drive ended when wide receiver Justin Brown fumbled. It seemed like that turnover really set the tone for the game. Owen Daniels caught a 2 yard touchdown pass with .27 seconds left in the 1st quarter. Baltimore never trailed in the game. Justin Tucker got his 1st of 4 field goals in the 2nd quarter to give the Ravens a 10-0 lead. Shawn Suisham hit 2 field goals to cut the Baltimore lead to 10-6 and it looked like the Steelers where back in the game, but those where the last points the Steelers would score for the night. Owen Daniels added a 2nd receiving touchdown; this time 1 yarder from Joe Flacco. In the 4th quarter Tucker made 3 field goals from 23, 22 and 20 yards to cap off the Ravens scoring night.

Flacco was 21 for 29 on the night for 166 and those 2 touchdowns for the Ravens. Bernard Pierce ran the ball 22 times for 96 yards to lead the Baltimore rushing attack. Steve Smith Sr. had 6 catches for 71 yards as the top Ravens receiver. Daniels only had 28 yards receiving on 5 catches, but he added those 2 touchdowns. On defense Elvis Dumervil had both of the Baltimore sacks of Ben Roethlisberger. C.J. Mosley recovered 1 of the Steelers fumbles and added 9 tackles. DeAngelo Tyson recovered the other Steelers fumble. Haloti Ngata ended the Steelers night by picking off Roethlisberger late in the game. For the Steelers Roethlisberger went 22 for 37 for 217 yards and that 1 interception. Le’Veon Bell was the Steelers leading rusher with 59 yards on 11 carries. Bell also added 5 catches for 48 yards. Antonio Brown was the Steelers leading receiver with 7 catches for 90 yards. Lawrence Timmons was the Steelers leading tacklers with 12 while Ryan Shazier was right behind him with 11 tackles. Both teams are now 1-1 in the AFC North. In Week 3 Pittsburgh stays on the road to play the Carolina panthers on Sunday night while the Ravens play their 3rd division opponent as they head to Cleveland to play the Browns.

The National Hockey League season is less than a month away from starting and the NHL has made some rule changes for the coming season.

Rule 1.8 – Rink – Goalkeeper’s Restricted Area. What it should mean. The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.

Rule 23 – Game Misconduct Penalties. A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (“Physical Fouls”), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.

Rule 24 – Penalty Shot; The ‘Spin-O-Rama’ move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.

Rule 38 – Video Goal Judge; Video review will be expanded in the following areas: Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are “good hockey goals”). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a “goal” or “no goal” call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. In reviewing “Kicked in Goals,” Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a “distinct kicking motion” in order to overrule a “goal” call on the ice, or to uphold a “no goal” call on the ice.

Rule 57 – Tripping: The rule relating to “Tripping” will be revised to specifically provide that a two-minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player “dives” and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player “dives” and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)

Rule 64 – Diving / Embellishment: The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale outlined below.

Incident # Player Fine(s) Head Coach Fine(s)
1 Warning N/A
2 $2,000 N/A
3 $3,000 N/A
4 $4,000 $2,000
5 $5,000 $3,000
6 $5,000 $4,000
7 $5,000 $5,000
8 $5,000 $5,000

Rule 76 – Face-offs: To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two-minute minor bench penalty.

Rule 84 – Overtime: Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. The entire ice surface will undergo a “dry scrape” prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.

Rule 85 – Puck Out of Bounds: There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are “categories of plays” where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net.

In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014/15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.

Rule 1.9 – Rink – Face-off Spots and Circles – Ice Markings/Hash Marks The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).

I definitely have to thank http://www.NHL.com for explaining these rule changes to me in a way I could understand them, but I will miss the spin -o- rama move in a shoot out.

Last night the Phoenix Mercury beat the Chicago Sky 87-82 to sweep the WNBA championship series and win the league title. Diana Taurasi and Candice Dupree led the Mercury with 24 points apiece as Phoenix played without star center Brittney Griner. Taurasi scored 14 of her 24 points in the fourth quarter and hit a tie breaking 16-foot jumper and was fouled with 14.3 seconds left and made the ensuing free throw to put Phoenix up 85-82. DeWanna Bonner had 12 points and Penny Taylor added 11 for the Mercury. Elena Delle Donne, who battled a back injury during the series, scored 23 points, Sylvia Fowles had 20 points and Allie Quigley had 19 for the Sky.

Week 1 of the NFL season is in the books. If you’re a regular listener to Sports Time Radio you know that Dan the Man, Mr. Fantasy and I picked the winners of the games. This season we classed it up a little bit by adding Schaumburg Stu to the list of people picking games. I do have to warn you not to bet your hard-earned money on any choices we make. As you’ll be able to tell by our records we don’t bet our own money on our picks. For Week 1 we all ended up taking different roads, but everyone got to 9-7 for the 1st week. We’ll pick the Thursday night game on Thursday’s show 5:00 p.m.to 6:00 p.m. and will announce the rest of our picks on the Sunday morning show 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

On last Sunday’s show I made Mr. Fantasy pick one player at each position who would be the highest scoring player for fantasy in Week 1. Now I’m using the scoring system we use in our Yahoo fantasy league to get my point totals; so your league may use a different scoring system. Mr. Fantasy was a little Denver Bronco heavy for his Week 1 picks; so let’s see how that worked out for him. At quarterback Mr. Fantasy said Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos. Manning ended up being the 3rd highest scoring quarterback as Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons and Matt Stafford of the Detroit Lions scored more points. At running back Mr. Fantasy went with Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings. Peterson finished 23rd among running backs as Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Von Bell was the highest scoring running back in Week 1. The next Denver Broncos player Mr. Fantasy went with was wide receiver Demaryius Thomas. Thomas finished Week 1 54th out of the wide receivers. Calvin Johnson “Megatron” was the top wide receiver in Week 1 action. At tight end for Week 1 Mr. Fantasy went with Dallas Cowboys veteran Jason Witten. Witten was the 34th tight end from Week 1. This is where Mr. Fantasy should’ve went with a Denver Broncos player as Julius Thomas was the highest scoring tight end for Week 1. I even made Mr. Fantasy pick a kicker for Week 1. Again he went to the Denver Broncos for his pick. Brandon McManus is the Broncos kicker filling in for the suspended Matt Prater. McManus ended Week 1 in 16th place among kickers. Matt Bryant of the Atlanta Falcons took the top spot for kickers in Week 1. To be fair to Mr. Fantasy I didn’t give him any time to prepare for this segment of the show and I just dropped these questions. Now he’ll know every week that they’re coming.

While the baseball season is headed to a close the experts are starting to throw out their picks for the top awards. The debate that always seems to come up is who is the National League MVP? Many of these experts are picking Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw as MVP While Kershaw is far and away the best pitcher in major league baseball I don’t think he should be the NL MVP As of this writing Kershaw has made 24 starts for the Dodgers. It doesn’t look like Kershaw will get to 30 starts this season. A baseball team will play 162 games in a season; should a guy that plays in less than 30 games be the M.V.P. Kershaw will easily win the Cy Young award for the NL this season. Kershaw is 18-3 with a 1.67 ERA in his 24 starts. While Kershaw has had a great season and has great numbers I again have to ask; is a guy who plays in less than 30 games the MVP? No one in the NL has stepped up to claim this award as their own, but we still have some time left this season. San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey has been one of the hottest players in baseball and if he can continue will be in the running for MVP The Miami Marlins have hung around the wild card race even after losing their #1 pitcher (Jose Fernandez) to injury. Will that get their star player Giancarlo Stanton some MVP consideration. The Pittsburgh Pirates find themselves back in the wild card chase. Defending MVP Andrew McCutchen is their star, but would the Pirates be where they are without the play of Josh Harrison? While I don’t think that McCutchen or Harrison will win the NL MVP they both should pick up some votes. Just to put it out on the table; st the beginning of the baseball season we selected who would win awards this season. For NL MVP, Dan the Man picked Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mr. Fantasy went with Carlos Gomez of the Milwaukee Brewers. Schaumburg Stu selected Bryce Harper of the Washington nationals and I went with Yader Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Did you know that the WNBA is playing their championship right now. The Phoenix Mercury have a 2 games to 0 lead over the Chicago Sky. The Mercury won Game 1 83-62 and last night won Game 2 97-68. The series is set for a best 3 out of 5 games. Phoenix will try to close out the series Friday night in Chicago. Phoenix set a record in Game 1 by shooting 58% and added some more records in Game 2. The Mercury set a WNBA Finals record margin of 29 points. Tonight was another record-setting night for the Mercury all around with Diana Taurasi surpassing Katie Smith for second on the WNBA Finals all-time scorers list and tying her for the most 3-pointers made in WNBA Finals history. I’m betting you weren’t expecting any WNBA in this blog.

Thursday night the NFL season kicked off in Seattle. The defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks defeated the Green Bay Packers 36-16. It was a tight game going into the 2nd half. Seattle was ahead 17-10 at halftime, but was able to pull away in the second half. The Seahawks added a field goal and a safety in the 3rd quarter while holding Green Bay scoreless to make the score 22-10 after three quarters. While the Packers where able to put up a touchdown in the 4th quarter the Seahawks scored 2 touchdowns to get the score to where it ended 36-16.

The Seahawks were led by quarterback Russell Wilson, running back Marshawn Lynch and wide receiver Percy Harvin, Wilson was 19/28 for 191 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wilson also ran the ball 7 times for 29 yards. Lynch handle the load on the ground for the Seahawks carrying the football 20 timed for 110 yards and scoring twice. Harvin led the Seahawks in receptions with 7 and receiving yards with 59. Ricardo Lockette and Derrick Coleman where the two players Wilson threw his touchdown passes to. On the defensive side the Seahawks had 3 sacks and 1 interception. Cliff Avril, O’Brien Schofield and Michael Bennett where the Seahawks getting sacks. Bennett’s sack led to the Seattle safety which was credited to Tony McDaniel. Byron Maxwell got the interception for Seattle. Bobby Wagner led the team with 14 tackles and Kam Chancellor had 11 tackles. For the Packers Aaron Rodgers was 23/33 for 189 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. James Starks gained the most yards rushing for the Packers. Carrying the ball 7 times for 37 yards. John Kuhn had the Packers rushing touchdown. Jordy Nelson was the Packers leading receiver with 9 catches for 83 yards. Randall Cobb caught the touchdown pass from Rodgers. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix had the Packers only sack of the game while Morgan Burnett and A.J. Hawk where the teams leading tacklers with 8 tackles apiece.

You’ll get our full picks for Week 1 of the NFL season on Sunday’s show, but on every Thursday show will let you know who we’re picking for that night’s game. On the show we all had Seattle winning this game; so going into Sunday’s game we’re all 1-0. This season Schaumburg Stu is joining myself, Mr. Fantasy and Dan the Man in picking the week’s NFL games.

It seemed like at one point in time everyone had expected the St. Louis cardinals to pass the Milwaukee Brewers for 1st place in the National League (N.L.) Central and it finally happened. Milwaukee ended a nine game losing streak last night (Friday) with a 6-2 win over St. Louis. They’re playing a four game series against each other this weekend. St. Louis won Thursday nights game; so the series is 1 game apiece right now. The Brewers are 3 games out of 1st place and really need to win the two remaining games in this series to tighten the division race. Milwaukee does hold 1 of the 3 N.L. wild card spots, but any team would prefer to win the division than go into that one game wild card playoff. Tonight’s game is a 6:10 p.m. (CST) start in Miller Park features Lance Lynn (14-8) on the mound for the Cardinals against Kyle Lohse (12-8) for the Brewers. Lynn is the pitcher St. Louis likes to see on the mound in Milwaukee. Lynn is 4-1 with a 1.72 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings in nine games; five starts at Milwaukee, including three relief appearances in the 2011 N.L. championship series.
He fanned 11 Brewers while scattering three hits in seven innings of a 4-0 win in his most recent visit to Miller Park on April 14. Lohse is in a six-start stretch in which he’s gone 1-4 with a 6.46 ERA while opponents have batted .322. He was roughed up for seven runs Sunday and pulled with two outs in the sixth of a 15-5 defeat at San Francisco. While there are a couple of other close pennant races these are the only two top teams playing each other this week. The other tight races have the Loa Angeles Dodgers with a 2 game lead in the N.L. West over the San Francisco Giants. The Kansas City Royals also have a 2 game lead over the Detroit Tigers in the American League (A.L.) Central. I mentioned earlier that teams would much, much rather win their division than be a wild card team. Not that a team wouldn’t take a spot in the playoffs as a wild card team, but you’d much rather win your division than go into the winner take all wild card game.

Team USA has moved into the next round of play in the FIBA World Cup. The international basketball tournament is borrowing the name from soccer. Team USA’s average margin of victory is 33.2 Points Per Game (PPG) through its first five games. While I’m not all that interested in this tournament the National Basketball Association (NBA) news that came out was when NBA commissioner Adam Silver said that he believes expanded legalized sports betting in the United States is what he called “inevitable,” and the league is open to participating in it. Silver is the first professional sports commissioner who has come out and address gambling and their league. It’s a change in tune for the NBA, which in 2012 joined the NCAA, NFL, MLB and NHL in suing New Jersey over its efforts to bring legalized sports betting to its casinos and race tracks. The sports leagues, which were joined by the Department of Justice, ultimately prevailed over New Jersey with a majority decision by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. New Jersey, however, is continuing its pursuit of sports betting. More than $3.6 billion was wagered on sports at Nevada sports books in 2013. The American Gaming Association, citing the National Gambling Impact Study, estimates that as much as $380 billion is wagered illegally in the U.S. annually. I’d be interested to know where the other major sports stand on this topic, but I doubt will hear much from them on gambling. This is a story that I’ll be interested to see play out.

Are you surprised that Tiger Woods missed the cut yesterday at the PGA Championship? I think I was more surprised that he decided to play than I am that he missed the cut. It was the last tournament of the season for Woods and I wonder if that played into his decision to go out and try to play. Woods played in just seven PGA tournaments this season and won’t qualify for the Fed Ex Cup playoffs that start in two weeks. There was some talk of Woods playing in the Ryder Cup, but you’d have to think that right now it’s better for him to rest and try to recover. I just kind of have a feeling that we’re not going to see Woods in a tournament for a while.

Rory McIlroy is leading the PGA Championship at -9 and has a one shot lead over Jason Day and Jim Furyk. Ryan Palmer, Rickie Fowler and Mikko Ilonen are just two shots back at -7 under. Phil Mickelson is tied for 7th place going into Saturday’s round and is three shots behind McIlroy at -6 under par. McIlroy has been the hottest player on the tour lately and will see if he can add a second major win in a row during these next two rounds.

Kevin Durant left Team USA this week citing mental and physical exhaustion. Durant likely would have split his time between the two positions, starting at small forward. Now Team USA’s best options there are first-timers Gordon Hayward, Chandler Parsons and Kyle Korver, none of whom have made NBA All-Star teams. Anthony Davis, a 21-year-old, is the only All-Star frontcourt player left for Team USA, unless Love decides to play now that his trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers is agreed upon. I have to wonder if the Paul George’s injury had anything to do with Durant’s decision. Durant plays a lot of basketball and you can’t blame him for wanting some time off. His team; the Oklahoma City Thunder goes to the NBA playoffs every season and that adds games to his year as well as these tryouts and basketball camps. You can see where it could get mentally and physically draining on a player. Sacramento Kings forward Rudy Gay has been added to Team USA’s roster to replace Durant.

The NFL pre-season got up and running last night. I know there’s been a Hall of Fame game then the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens played Thursday night. Friday had more of a full slate of games. Just some quick take a ways from last nights action. The Chicago Bears defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 34-28, but Bears tight end Martellus Bennett did not participate do to his suspension. Blake Bortles was solid in his preseason debut Friday night, throwing for 117 yards and leading a second-half drive for a field goal in a 16-10 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bortles went 7 for 11 for 117 yards in the game. Matt Cassel outplayed rookie Teddy Bridgewater in the Minnesota Vikings’ opener a 10-6 win over the Oakland Raiders. Cassel went 5-6 for 62 yards while Bridgewater was 6-13 for 49 yards. Derek Carr went 10-16 for 74 yards on the Raiders side, but did throw and interception. Carolina Panthers Pro Bowl quarterback Cam Newton did not play in Friday night’s preseason-opening 20-18 victory over the Buffalo Bills. This is not a setback for Newton, who underwent surgery in March to tighten tendons in his left ankle, as much as it is precautionary. In St. Louis Michael Sam got an extended look at defensive end in the St. Louis Rams’ pre-season opener in a 26-24 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Just a quick little NFL pre-season wrap up from last night.

Did you have the Baltimore Orioles leading the American League East by 5 games at this point in the season? Well that’s right where the Orioles are. A 5 game lead over the New York Yankees. I guess you could see the Orioles in 1st place being led by first base man Chris Davis; no. Davis has had some injuries this season and is having a down year coming off of 2013. Davis does have 20 home runs and has driven in 55, but he’s hitting .198 for the season. Then you’re thinking catcher Matt Wieters is having a break out season; no. Wieters is on the disabled list having playing in just 26 games for Baltimore this season. So how have the Orioles gotten themselves into 1st place. Adam Jones and Nick Markakis lead the offense as full-time players and a great free agent signing of Nelson Cruz have helped. Makakis is hitting .287 with 10 home runs and 39 RBI’s and has been a great defender in right field. Jones is hitting .284 with 22 home runs and 70 RBI’s while being a top defensive center fielder as well. Cruz is supplying the big power numbers for Baltimore this season with 29 home runs and 77 RBI’s. Shortstop J.J. Hardy;s power numbers have been down, but he’s gotten his average up to .281 and leads the team in doubles with 25. Wei-Yin Chen is leading the pitching staff in wins with 12, but Bud Norris and Chris Tillman have 9 wins apiece. After Tommy Hunter’s injury Zach Britton has stepped in and locked down the closer role. Darren O’Day has been a top set up guy with 18 holds and the Orioles went out and added left-handed pitcher Andrew Miller at the trading deadline. Will see if the Orioles can hold off the Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays down the stretch in the A.L. East.

If you’re an Indiana Pacers fan the worst possible thing happened last night in the scrimmage for Team USA basketball. George’s leg landed and then buckled at the base of the basket stanchion after he fouled James Harden on a drive to the basket just 27 seconds into the fourth quarter. George suffered a open tibia-fibula fracture and had surgery on it last night. George is expected to remain hospitalized for about three days. One of the reports that came out said that while there didn’t appear to be additional damage besides the fractures, doctors believe George likely will miss all of next season, though no official prognosis has been given. The White team led George’s Blue team 81-71 in the scrimmage at the time of the injury, but the rest of the game was cancelled after George got hurt.

The Indiana Pacers had the best record in the Eastern conference last season before losing in the conference finals to the Miami Heat. George is the Pacers best player averaging 21.7 points per game, 3.5 assists per game and 6.8 rebounds per game. In 19 post season games last season George’s scoring average increased to 23.6 points per game. With the majority if not all of the top NBA free agents signed by now the Pacers don’t really have to many options to try to replace George outside of the organization. Remember the Pacers lost Lance Stevenson as a free agent in the off-season. I guess will see if the Pacers male a move and try to add a player like Shawn Marion or Al-Farouq Aminu to fill some of the void left by George’s injury.

The MLB non-waiver trading deadline was July 31st and a lot of teams made moves before the deadline. The day start with the Boston Red Sox making their 1st of s couple trades they would make by sending Jon Lester, Jonny Gomes and cash to the Athletics for Yoenis Cespedes and a Competitive balance pick. The day ended with the Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays making a three team deal. The Tigers landed the big prize in this deal getting David Price. The Mariners got the right-handed bat a lot of experts say they needed in Austin Jackson and Tampa Bay came away with three players Nick Franklin, Drew Smyly and top shortstop prospect Willy Adames. The Red Sox also sent John Lackey, minor league pitcher Corey Littrell and Cash considerations to the St. Louis Cardinals for Allen Craig and Joe Kelly. By far the busiest team at the trade deadline Boston made two other trades sending Andrew Miller to Baltimore for minor league left hander Eduardo Rodriguez and then trading Stephen Drew and cash to New York Yankees for Kelly Johnson. It was a year where major league players were traded for major league players, but as always there was a share of prospects moved in deals. The Yankees added another infielder getting Martin Prado from the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor league catcher Peter O’Brien and a player to be named later. The Diamondbacks also Gerardo Parra to Milwaukee Brewers for two minor leaguers Anthony Banda and Mitch Haniger. The A’s sent Tommy Milone to the Minnesota Twins to get back outfielder Sam Fuld. The mariners did land a 2nd right-handed hitter getting Chris Denorfia from the San Diego Padres for Abraham Almonte and minor league pitcher Stephen Kohlscheen. The Houston Astros had said earlier in the week that they would be willing to trade a starting pitcher and they did sending Jarred Cosart, Enrique Hernandez and Austin Wates to Miami Marlins for Jake Marisnick, Colin Moran and Francis Martes. If you where listening to the show yesterday (Friday) you heard us talking about the Cubs trade to get another prospect. The Cubs traded Emilio Bonifacio, James Russell and cash to Atlanta Braves for Victor Caratini.

I think I got through all of the trades from deadline day and now will see if these deals work out for the stretch run. Of course there will be questions out there. Did the Rays get enough in the David Price deal? If Jon Lester is just a rental for the A’s; do they have to win the World Series to validate this trade? As this plays out the last couple months of the season will get these answers.

Did your favorite team make a move? Did they make themselves better or did they ship off players from their major league roster for prospects?

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have acquired Huston Street from the San Diego Padres in a 6 player deal. Prospects Taylor Lindsey, R.J. Alvarez, Jose Rondon and Elliot Morris will head to San Diego while the Angels will also get right-hander Trevor Gott. Street has 24 saves and has only given up 4 earned runs in 33 appearances for an ERA of 1.09. Ernesto Frieri started the season as the Angels closer and did get 11 saves, but had his issues along the way and was eventually dealt to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Joe Smith moved into the closer role after the Frieri deal and picked up 15 saves to this point for the Angels. Street is in his 10th season and the Angels will be his 4th team. He has closed for the Oakland A’s, Colorado Rockies and of course the Padres before the trade. Street has 258 career saves with his high water mark being 37 saves for the A’s in 2006. The back-end up the bullpen was the Angels weakness going into the season, but with the trade for Street they get an experienced closer who should help keep them in the American League West race. The Angels are 1 1/2 behind the A’s in the West and would claim a wild card spot right now. The top two teams in the A.L. West the A’s and the Angels have made big trades. Does this mean the Seattle Mariners have to make a deal to stay in the A.L. West race? The Mariners are currently 9 games behind Oakland, but would be the 2nd wild card team right now.

I’m not sure how many of you where rooting for the New York Yankees this season. With it being Derek Jeter’s last season I thought they might get themselves into the playoffs and Jeter would go out that way. Now with the pitching injuries the Yankees have had I don’t think will get to see Jeter in the playoffs one more time. Masahiro Tanaka has issues with the ligament in his pitching elbow. No one has said the magic Tommy John word when it comes to Tanaka, but you have to wonder if that surgery is down the road for him. The Yankees have also announced that CC Sabathia’s season is officially over. Sabathia is scheduled to have arthroscopic debridement surgery this coming Wednesday. No team can lose it’s top two starting pitchers and hope to compete; so sadly for Yankees fans and Derek Jeter fans it looks like his career will end at game 162 this season.

As you’ve known for a week or so now LeBron James signed a 2 year deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Well now James wants Kevin Love to be a Cavalier and the trade rumors have started. Unlike James’s situation when he went to Miami, Love has a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves; so Cleveland just can’t sign him. The trade rumor I’ve heard the most has Cleveland sending this year’s #1 overall draft pick; Andrew Wiggins, last years #1 overall draft pick Anthony Bennett and a 2015 1st round draft pick to Minnesota for Love. It’s being reported that the Timberwolves want more than this for the Cavaliers for Love. James must realize that the way the cavaliers roster is right now that they’re too young and inexperienced to win and NBA title and adding a player like Love brings the Cavaliers closer to that title. Don’t forget though that the Golden State Warriors have long had an interest in Love. The Warriors are offering a package that includes David Lee and Harrison Barnes. Minnesota would like Klay Thompson in any deal they make with Golden State, but right now the Warriors have been hesitant to include Thompson in any deal. The Chicago Bulls where the 3rd team that had major interest in Love, but with the signing of Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic signing the Bulls are out. I mentioned earlier that James only signed for two seasons with Cleveland. Will we have to go through “Decision 3” with James? I don’t think that will happen. Two years is a good signing by James and his people. After that 2nd season the new television contract kicks in for the NBA and the salary cap should go up allowing James to get more money in a couple of seasons. I don’t think Cavaliers fans should panic about the short-term deal for James; I think it was just a smart business move by his agent.

So this may be the slowest sports week of the year. Major League Baseball is on their All-Star break. Most of the big name free agents in the National Basketball Association have signed with teams. National Football League training camps don’t open until next week for most teams. The National Hockey League gets pushed to the side unless they’re actually playing games. Even the World Cup has ended; oh what to do.

If you’ve been following NBA free agents and where they ended up signing, did you notice that the Los Angeles Clippers didn’t sign any players? Could that be because Donald Sterling still owns the team? This is going to be the case right into the regular season unless something big happens. Even though Sterling was offered a unbelievable $2 billion dollars for the Clippers I don’t think he wants to sell the team and will do everything he can legally to hang on to them. While I don’t side with Sterling or the comments that he made he is allowed due process like any other American is and we have to deal with this. I don’t know why he didn’t take that offer and run; since it was way over what the team is worth, but he didn’t. It looks like his family would like him to take that offer, but that might end up being decided in court as well. As it looks, this will drag out into the NBA regular season and how will this affect the Clippers? Would you go to a Clippers game if Sterling still owns the team? Why would Sterling hang on to this team if attendance drops and the Clippers start to lose money. Who knows when this will wrap up as it looks like Sterling is going to go through every and any legal channel he can find to some how try to hang onto the Clippers. It’s a tough spot for the NBA and new commissioner Adam Silver to be in to start the season.

Did you watch the MLB All-Star game last night? I think the MLB All-Star game is far and away the closest to an actually game than any of the other sports. The American League defeated the National League 5-3. Max Scherzer was awarded the win while Pat Neshek took the loss. Glen Perkins of the hosting team the Minnesota Twins got the save for the American League. Mike Trout won the Most Valuable Player award. Trout was 2 for 3 with a triple and 2 RBI’s in the game. While Trout was a good of choice as any, weren’t you secretly rooting for Derek Jeter to win the MVP in his last All-Star game? I can honestly say that I was and Jeter did enough to win the award, but Trout did a little more. Jeter went 2 for 2; leading off the bottom of the 1st with a double and scored the 1st run for the American League. Maybe it would’ve been overkill had they given Jeter the MVP award, but hey Mariano Rivera won it last season pitching just one inning. Jeter got his moment to say goodbye after 6 innings as Alexei Ramirez came out to replace Jeter after the American League had taken the field. It was a nice moment for the 14 time All-Star as Jeter waved to the fans and tipped his cap. Jeter waved multiple times at the National League dugout and I think he hugged everyone in the American League dugout.

The British Open starts tomorrow (Thursday) or as it’s just being called now The Open. ESPN has the coverage and you know they have to be jumping up and down that Tiger Woods has decided to play. While I think it would be a bit of a surprise if Woods ended up winning this tournament, but it would be a great scenario if it happened. Woods isn’t that far removed from being injured and you have to wonder if he’s 100% healthy. I’m sure Woods is most people’s pick to win this weekend, but there are some other golfers to watch. Lee Westwood should’ve won The Open last year at Muirfield and he may bounce back and win this year. How about Bubba Watson? He can play big in big tournaments or he could go out and double bogey the front nine, but he’s fun to watch. Graeme McDowell may surprise some people this week. He’s from Northern Ireland and should be familiar with the course; so don’t be surprised to see his name high on the leaderboard though the weekend. So there are a couple of other names other than Tiger Woods to look out for over the weekend for you.
