If you’ve listened to the show Sportstime Radio. Sunday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on BlogTalkRadio you know my co-host Dan the man and I live in the Chicago area. Now that the Blackhawks winning streak or as some experts pointed out a points scoring streak has ended the talk has turned to Derrick Rose.

Now I’ve never played a minute in the National Basketball Association (NBA); so I don’t know what that’s like. What I have in common with D. Rose is I have had reconstructive knee surgery three times. Twice on my left knee and once on my right knee. I’ve actually had a total of five knee surgeries, but two where considered minor knee surgeries. What I can tell you about this is sometimes the mental aspect of the recovery is the toughest part and I think that’s where D. Rose may be right now. He’s been cleared by the doctors to return to action, but he hasn’t yet. I don’t have D. Rose’ quote right off-hand, but he more or less said he doesn’t think he’s ready to come back. He also mentioned that he wants to be able to dunk off his left leg with no issues before he returns. Now I have to tell you he may never be able to dunk off that leg the same as he used to, but the only way he’s going to know is to try. I’m sure he’s done this in practice, but has to have the confidence to play in a game and get the chance to try it. D. Rose don’t wait until next pre-season to do this; get out and try it in a game before your season ends. The Bulls aren’t going to do anything negative to D. Rose; he’s their best player and their future. I’m sure they’ll limit his minutes at first and they can even rest him if he can’t play in back to back games. Believe it or not the best thing is to give that knee a try to see how it holds up, but you have to get past that mental block. There is a chance that D. Rose won’t be the same player he was before he got injured, but I think he’ll be just fine as long as he can get started. It’s always in the back of your mind, but once you get into the flow of the game it will become easier and easier to play. D. Rose has been killed in the local media here by a lot of guys and I didn’t want to do that to him. I do believe he needs to find his way back onto the court this season. Not only would it help him mentally and make the off-season less stressful, but it will help his team. It will also make him a good teammate and right now he needs to be a good teammate.

I’d like to think I’m an avid fantasy player and hopefully one of the better ones out there. I regularly play baseball, football and hockey. Now I did take this hockey season off because of the strike, but I’ll be back next season. I’ve even played basketball any kind of March madness pick’em, Nascar and even a PGA golf league. I don’t think I would call myself a fantasy expert, but I have a lot of experience in fantasy leagues. Now this actually all started when I bought myself a new car. If you’ve listen to the show you know I bought a 2013 Chevy Sonic LT. When I bought the car they gave me a free subscription to Sirius XM radio. Now I’ve enjoyed having this and have had a good time flipping channels. Well I found the Fantasy Sports channel. What has surprised me the most about this station is how many people play in very, very small fantasy leagues. The experts take calls and give advise and very, very rarely do they get a call from someone who’s league is bigger than 12 teams. Now for me these are way to small for baseball leagues and it takes the fun out of it for me. Most fantasy league rosters have 20 to 25 players on it. Now there are 30 teams in Major League baseball with 25 players on a roster. Now my math isn’t always the best, but I believe there are 750 players on major league rosters. Now you’re wondering about my league; well it’s 20 teams with 23 roster spots per team. I believe this really makes our league better. We do suffer from time to time with teams who stop changing line ups but every league has those type of problems. Trust me I understand the difficulty in researching baseball with everything going on and it’s easier to get into a small league. If you love baseball do the work get into a bigger league and have fun with it. Don’t jump up and down when you win your league and it has 10 or 12 teams in it; jump up and down when you win your league and it has 20 teams in it. Just like Mr. Fantasy does when he wins a league; I’ve known him long enough to know he does this. Anyway I’ll reach out to you guys who take the time to read this and by the way thank you for that. We have a 20 team league with some openings right now; so sign up and give it a try. It’s a free league we run through Yahoo. Here’s all the information you’ll need to sign up.

It’s Yahoo Fantasy baseball

The League name is Touch’em All

The league ID# is 33024

The league password is payup1

I hope to see you in the league and good luck.

As far as awards go this may be the toughest of all to pick a winner. There where so many good rookies in the NFL this season that even getting a ballot of five together meant leaving a couple of players out. The advantage to this is everyone has their opinion and this is how my ballot shakes out.

Andrew Luck is the NFL Rookie of the Year on my ballot. Luck led the Indianapolis Colts to a 10-5 record and a playoff spot. Luck threw for 21 touchdowns and 4183 yards; he also rushed for 5 touchdowns. There where a lot of expectations put on Luck being the #1 overall pick in the draft and he handled them well. The only negative to his rookie season where the 18 interceptions he threw. Since the Colts went to picking #1 in the draft with just a couple of wins to a playoffs spot this season that helps boost Luck to the NFL’s Rookie of the Year.

This is a close call but I put Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins second on my ballot. He could just as well be the Rookie of the Year but I went with Luck. Griffin threw for 3100 yards and 20 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions. Griffin has also ran for 752 yards and 6 touchdowns. If the Redskins can get a win in their last game of the season against the Dallas Cowboys they’ll make the playoffs. Griffin has led the Redskins to a 9-6 record this season but has missed a game and parts of a couple others due to injuries. Even with that Griffin would be a good choice as a Rookie of the Year.

Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks is third on my ballot. Wilson a third round draft pick is one of the biggest surprises this season. Most people thought he’d sit behind free agent singing Matt Flynn but Wilson went to camp and won the starting job. He led Seattle to a 10-5 record and a playoff birth. Wilson has thrown for 2868 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also added 3 rushing touchdowns this season. Wilson has played just as well as Luck or Griffin and I wouldn’t be surprised if he won Rookie of the Year.

Enough with the quarterbacks for now. Alfred Morris of the Washington Redskins comes in at #4 on my ballot. Morris had to of been the steal of the draft. Morris was taken in the 6th round with the 173rd pick. Morris has carried the ball 302 times this season. Morris has rushed for 1413 and 10 touchdowns while averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Morris is the perfect to compliment to quarterback Robert Griffin III (#2 on my ballot). The Redskins are 9-6 with their make or break game coming up this Sunday against Dallas.

If he was good enough to be considered Defensive Player of the Year then Luke Kuechly Middle Linebacker of the Carolina Panthers should get consideration for Rookie of the Year. He leads the NFL on tackles with 151. Of course being a Middle Linebacker, he doesn’t put up huge sack numbers; he has 1. Kuechly has intercepted 2 passes this season to go along with all his tackles. In a down year for the Panthers (6-9) Kuechly is a bright spot for their defense.

There you go pick one of mine or come up with your own Rookie of the Year. You can follow me on Twitter @Burketime

This is a tough award to pick and may be the toughest of all to select a top coach. There are quite a few good candidates for this award. Everyone has a favorite coach; so here’s the way I have them for this season.

My choice for NFL Coach of the Year is Bruce Arians of the Indianapolis Colts. To tell you the truth I don’t even know if he qualifies for the award. His job is offensive coordinator but he’s filled in this season as head coach while Chuck Pagano recovers from cancer treatments. The Colts are 10-5 while Arians has filled in and are in the playoffs. Pagano came back to his job Monday but Arians did a fantastic job while filling in. Not to mention the work he did with Andrew Luck. If he doesn’t qualify for the award they should change it and just give this award to Bruce Arians.

In any other year Mike Smith of the Atlanta Falcons would probably win Coach of the Year. The Falcons are 13-2 with a game to go and I believe have clinched home filed advantage throughout the playoffs. Smith and the Falcons still have a lot to prove even though they’ve done so well in the regular season. I think the Falcons need to win a playoff game or two and even though they say it doesn’t affect these awards I think in a voters mind I think it does. Anyway Smith has done a good job with the Falcons this season and should get a lot of votes for Coach of the Year.

3rd on my ballot is Gary Kubiak of the Houston Texans. The Texans are 12-3 and at times have looked like a Super Bowl contender. The Texans a lot like the Falcons have to prove something come playoff time, but for the regular season Kubiak keeps this team winning. Houston maybe the most balanced team in the NFL and of course that’s where coaching comes in. If the Texans can get a win this week (@Indianapolis) and clinch home field though the playoffs in the AFC that could help Kubiak get so extra votes.

Mike Shanahan of the Washington Redskins comes in fourth on my ballot. The Redskins are 9-6 and have a win and you’re in-game this week against the Dallas Cowboys. Shanahan has a rookie quarterback in Robert Griffin III and a rookie running back in Alfred Morris but even with that the Redskins have a chance to win their division. There may have been some doubts about Shanahan without having John Elway under center, but this season has helped change some of that. Will see how many ballots Shanahan ends up on.

Maybe Pete Carroll should be higher on my ballot than fifth but that’s where I have him. Seattle is 10-5 so far this season and no one wants to play them in Seattle. Carroll went with a rookie quarterback in Russell Wilson over free agent signing Matt Flynn and the choice turned out to be right. Carroll also has the second leading rusher in the NFL in Marshawn Lynch. The Seahawks are a playoff team this season and that helps put Carroll on my list because I don’t think anyone had Seattle in the playoffs at the start of the season.
