When you mention the award for Defensive Player of the Year two guys come right to mind. They could really be 1 and 1a and I wouldn’t be surprise if at the end of the season they end up splitting the award. I didn’t take the easy way out like that and I went with one over the other. There’s still one game to go and if one of them went nuts it could have a huge effect on voting. Anyway, here’s my ballot.

I went with J.J. Watt, defensive end for the Houston Texans. Watt sits at 20.5 sacks right now and like I mentioned there is one game to go. The Texans are 12-3 and are looking at a bye in the playoffs. The Houston defense is giving up 20.2 points per game and Watt is a big part of that. Watt is also putting up these numbers even though Brian Cushing was lost for the season.

Aldon Smith is second on my ballot. Smith is only one sack behind Watt at 19.5. Smith is a big reason the 49ers defense ranks in the top ten in all the major stats. Third in points allowed at 17.3; fourth in passing yards allowed at 199.7; sixth in rushing yards at 96.8 for an overall ranking of second at 296.5 yards per game. The 49ers are in the playoffs this season and are 10-4-1 with a game to go.

As I look past sack totals for the third spot on my ballot I’m going with Luke Kuechly. Kuechly is the middle linebacker for the Carolina Panthers and while the Panthers have had a down year at 6-9; Kuechly leads the NFL with 151 tackles. Last time I checked tackling was an important part of the game. My guess is Kuechly will be over looked on most ballots, but I believe he belongs on the list.

Von Miller and his 17.5 sacks ends up in the fourth spot on my ballot. He’s the leader of the Denver Broncos defense and that defense has helped the Broncos go 12-3 this season. The Broncos are third in yards allowed per game at 302.2 this season; fifth in points allowed per game at 19.1 and third in rush yards allowed per game at 91.0. All good reason to include Miller in the Defensive Player of the Year talk.

Charles Tillman fills out my ballot for Defensive Player of the Year. While Tillman has just three interceptions all three of them have been returned for touchdowns. Tillman does much more for the Bears defense. Tillman has 71 total tackles so far this season, but he has forced 10 fumbles making him dangerous to be around with the football.

It’s always tougher to pick a Defensive Player of the Year, so let me know Who Ya Got? You can follow me on Twitter @Burketime

With one week left in the NFL regular season I thought it might be a good time to hand out some awards. So who is the National Football League Most Valuable Player. There are some good choices for M.V.P. this season, but I think one player was above all the others. Here’s the way my ballot would look. My pick for M.V.P. would be:

Adrian Peterson, running back for the Minnesota Vikings. A.D. yeah I got that right, his nickname is All Day. Is there a better player in the NFL right now? No. He leads the league in rushing right now with 1898 yards and isn’t too far off from breaking the season record for rushing yards. Peterson needs 204 rushing yards this week against Green Bay to set the record. With Percy Harvin injured Peterson has been the only true offensive threat for the Vikings but teams still can’t stop him. Peterson is the player mostly responsible for the Vikings being able to win and you’re in the playoffs situation this weekend. I haven’t even mentioned that he’s coming off major reconstructive knee surgery. With all this considered; Adrian Peterson is this season’s M.V.P.

Behind Peterson for me would be Calvin Johnson; Megatron. I know his team the Detroit Lions are 4-11 at this point in the season but you can’t argue with the numbers he’s put up. 117 catches for 1892 yards an average of 16.2 yards per catch and 5 touchdowns. The Lions offense is Johnson and every team knows it, but he’s still put up these kinds of numbers. Johnson is the best receiver in the NFL and #2 on my M.V.P. ballot.

There are a few quarterbacks names you could throw into a hat and pick one out for this award but I’m going with Peyton Manning. Coming off a neck injury which cost him all of last season. Denver is 12-3 right now and have a chance to end up with the best record in the AFC. They’re second in scoring at 29.5 points per game. Manning has 34 touchdown passes and 4355 passing yards with one game to go.

Marshawn Lynch is the fourth name on my ballot. I know Russell Wilson gets most of the press for Seattle but Lynch is actually second in the NFL in rushing yards at 1490. Seattle is second in the NFL in rushing yards per game at 161.7 yards. Lynch seems kind of hidden in Seattle’s success this season. 10-5 and a playoff berth guaranteed. Lynch while not the M.V.P. this season deserves a lot of credit for where the Seahawks are this season.

In the last spot on my ballot, I’m going with Brandon Marshall. Yeah I know there are four or five quarterbacks I could throw into this spot but I’m going with Marshall. The Bears offense has been embarrassing at times this season and when they throw the ball everyone knows it’s going in Marshall’s direction. Even though teams know this Marshall still caught 113 passes for 1466 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. This is the reason I thought Marshall should get on my ballot.

There you have it my M.V.P. ballot. There is one game to go but I don’t think it would change the way I’ve selected my players. Feel free to let me know what you think.

Dan the Man won week 14 with a 10-5 record. I was second at 9-6 and Mr. Fantasy finished third at 8-7. For the year I have the lead at 127-67-1. Mr. Fantasy is in second at 120-74-1. Dan the Man is in third with a record of 115-79-1.

Here’s what we agreed on this week.

Houston over Indianapolis

Denver over Baltimore

Washington over Cleveland

The Giants over Atlanta

Seattle over Buffalo in Toronto

Detroit over Arizona

Green Bay over Chicago

The rest of the games we split on; here they are.

Dan the Man and I have Miami, Mr. Fantasy has Jacksonville.

Mr. Fantasy and I have St. Louis, Dan the Man has Minnesota.

Dan the Man and Mr. Fantasy have New Orleans, I have Tampa Bay.

Mr. Fantasy and Dan the Man have Carolina, I have San Diego.

Mr. Fantasy and I have Oakland, Dan the Man has Kansas City.

Mr. Fantasy and I have Pittsburgh, Dan the Man has Dallas.

Mr. Fantasy and I have New England, Dan the man has the 49ers.

Dan the Man and Mr. Fantasy have the Jets, I have the Titans.

We are in playoffs now.  Hope you made the cut, and I would say stay with what got you there.  If you have decisions that need to be made, maybe this will help you.

Quarterbacks Start’ems.

  • Eli Manning – It’s December and the Giants win.  Falcons are 17th against the pass and Eli has thrown for 8 TD’s in previous 3 games.
  • Cam Newton-Faces bad San Diego Defense.
  • Russell Wilson- Has averaged two TD’s and only thrown 1 INT over the last 5 games.  He plays a soft Buffalo pass defense
  • Matthew Stafford –Arizona already has given up.  Detroit is a dangerous team thru the air.

Quarterback Sit’em

  • Andrew Luck –Has thrown 8 TD’s and 10 INT’s over the last 5 games.  He faces a tough defense that is going to prove last week was a bump in the road.
  • Jay Cutler-Bear’s system is bad.
  • Tony Romo- Was subpar against a good Bengals defense, now faces a great Pittsburg defense that must win this week if they are going to make the playoffs.
  •  Colin Kaepernick-This is the biggest game in his NFL career and he faces the best team in the NFL.  I think he is going to be glad NFL players have short memories this week.

Running Back Start’em

  • Steven Jackson-has been a good play the last 5 weeks and this trend continues against the Vikings average run defense.
  • Alfred Morris-He has proven when the offense leans on him he produces.  This week looks like they will need to with RGIII’s injury.
  •  Frank Gore-Needs 30 yds to break the franchise rushing record.  He faces one of the worst rush defense and should have solid production this week.
  • C.J. Spiller– Fred Jackson is out this week and Seattle is 22nd against the rush.

Running Back Sit’ems

  • Chris Johnson-Jets can play defense.
  • Demarco Murray- Pittsburg gives up the fewest rushing yds.
  • Ryan Mathews– He is on my list of biggest busts this year.  He has 1 rush TD this year and has only broke 90 yds rushing once.
  • Doug Martin-You must start him, but Drew Brees against the worst pass defense in the NFLTampa Bay may need to abandon the run to keep up.

Wide Receiver Start’em

  • Cecil Shorts-Number 1 target in Jacksonville.  He will get plenty of targets this week against Miami.
  • Hakeem Nicks- Now that he has returned he has seen 10 targets a game.  This is the time of year the Giants play their best football.
  •  Chris Givens-I know he only had 3 receptions last week, but he was targeted 10 times.  He will be thrown to early and often.
  • Greg Jennings-Next man up with Jordy Nelson out.  Greg Jennings will step in and have a great game.

Wide Receiver Sit’em

  • Larry Fitzgerald-Write him off for the rest of the year.
  • Stevie Johnson-Seattle is 4th against the pass. Big Jack you have over valued this guy all year.
  • Torrey Smith-He disappears against good defenses.  This week is Denver and they have a great passing defense.
  • Dez Bryant- Has a broken finger and faces a great defense this week.

Tight End Start’em

  • Greg Olsen-TD in previous 2 games.
  • Martellus Bennett– TD in previous 2 games
  • Kyle Rudolf-Rebounds from bad game against Chicago.  Had a TD in previous 3 games.

Tight End Sit’em

  • Brandon Pettigrew– Not getting a lot of looks
  • Antonio Gates– Packed it up.
  • Jermichael Finley-Not playing good
  • Owen Daniels-Bust alert, been in a funk last 3 weeks

Let me know how you like this and if you agree.  You can always get me @mrfanofsports or Email the show.

Week 14 was crazy.

We saw many blow outs and several teams didn’t show up this week in big situations.

Steelers, Texans, Falcons, Bears and Bengals all choked.

Can I stop hearing Tampa Bay and making the playoffs?  Will the Bears even make the playoffs after dropping another one?

Accountability time, I told you this is what you should do last week.  Let’s see how I did.

Week 14 Start’em and Sit’em

Posted: December 8, 2012 by Sports Time Radio in Uncategorized

Week 14 has a lot of great story lines.

Who will separate themselves in the Rookie of the year race?  I see it as a three horse race between Luck, RGIII and Wilson.

Is this the AFC championship preview?  New England hosts the Texans in what should be a great game.

Can the Steelers keep their playoff dreams alive?  The last spot comes down to Bengals and Steelers.

Now Which is the better division, all year everyone proclaimed the NFC as the better division, but I don’t see it that way anymore.

Let’s get into this week’s Fantasy Start’em and Sit’em

Quarterbacks Start’ems.

  • Eli Manning – Big day against a bad Tampa Defense and it is December.  Look for the Gaints to get really hot down the stretch.
  • Joe Flacco-Washington has a bad pass defense.  Ranked 31st against the pass, Flacco has a great afternoon.
  • Andrew Luck- Will be rookie of the year and we are watching something special developing this season in Indy, add in a bad Tennessee team=big afternoon.
  • Matthew Stafford –Has the best receiver in the NFL and Green Bay gives up yards thru the air.

Quarterback Sit’em

  • Phillip Rivers –Nothing left to play for and faces best defense in the NFL.
  • Jay Cutler-Great QB, bad system faces decent defense means bad numbers
  • Tony Romo- Bengals pass defense is under rated.  Romo will have trouble moving the ball.
  •  Russell Wilson-Is now in the Rookie of the year conversation after beating the Bears.  He will have a tough night against the Cardinals.

Running Back Start’em

  • Steven Jackson-87 rushes/369 yds/1 TD over the last 4 games.  This includes 2 games against the 49ers.  Buffalo is 30th against the rush, expect his production to be high.
  • Jamaal Charles-K.C has found its rushing attack. Charles has Averaged 105 yds a game over the last 4.  Lokk for this to continue this week.
  •  Chris Johnson- He has struggle the last 2 weeks, but he a colts defense that is not very good against the rush.  He gets things back on track this week.
  • Ben Jarvus Green-Elis– Faces a middle of the road rush defense and they will be keying in on A.J. Green and the pass defense.

Running Back Sit’ems

  • Bryce Brown-I know he has been putting up BIG numbers since starting, but this week he faces the best run defense.
  • Reggie Bush Faces 3rd rank rush defense
  • Ryan Mathews– he has been struggling on posting 53 yds a game and 0 TDs over the past 5 games.  Now he faces the number defense in the NFL.
  • Steven Ridley Has scored in his last 4 games.  Houston is stout against the run and Ridley will have a tough night.

Wide Receiver Start’em

  • Hakeem Nicks-Faces the 30th rank pass defense.
  • Jeremy Maclin- Faces worst Pass Defense in the NFL.
  •  Chris Givens-20 targets/16 Rec/207 yds/1 TD over the last 2 games.  This continues against Buffalo’s middle of the road pass Defense.
  • Torrey Smith-He is being targeted a minimum of 8 times a game over the last 4 games combined with the NFL’s worst pass defense.  He should put up good numbers this week.

Wide Receiver Sit’em

  • Larry Fitzgerald-He is one of the best receivers in the NFL, but no QB and a tough physical Seattle defense means another bad night.
  • Stevie Johnson-His production has been up over the last 4 games, but the Rams defense is better than they get credit for.  It will be tough game for him.
  • Brian Hartline-Faces 2nd best pass Defense
  • Steve Smith(Car)- 6 for 52 YDs when he faced Atlanta in September.  Atlanta is looking to clinch the number 1 seed.  His numbers will be similar to last time.

Tight End Start’em

  • Owen Daniels-Great situation against New England.
  • Jason Witten-Romo will be looking for his check down all night.
  • Jermaine Gresham-Who be open a lot
  • Heath Miller – Big Ben returns

Tight End Sit’em

  • Brandon Pettigrew– Not the main Tight end anymore.
  • Antonio Gates– They’ve packed it in
  • Jermichael Finley-Over rated
  • Brent Celek-not been productive
