I’m sure you’ve heard your favorite teams coach or general manager say it takes five years to actually evaluate the draft they just had. Since the 2013 NFL draft just ended I thought let’s go back, check and see how the players turned out. You’ll be the one to decide how your teams 1st round pick turned out.

#1 Miami Dolphins took Jake Long. Long signed with the St. Louis Rams as a free agent this off-season. While with the Dolphins he started 74 out of the 74 games he played their. He was limited to 12 games last season because of injuries. Long made 4 pro bowls in his five seasons in Miami.

#2 St. Louis Rams took Chris Long.Long has 42 career sacks for the Rams, but has come on in the last two seasons going over double digits in sack totals. Long has played in all 80 games since being drafted starting 68 of them. Also Jake and Chris went #1 and #2, but they’re nor related.

#3 Atlanta Falcons took Matt Ryan. Atlanta was looking for a franchise quarterback in this draft and they seemed to have found one. Ryan has started 78 out of a possible 80 games since being drafted. He missed two games to injury in his second season. Ryan has thrown for 18,957 yards and 127 touchdowns.

#4 Oakland Raiders took Darren McFadden. McFadden has been injury a lot playing in a total of 57 games. McFadden started 44 of those games. He’s rushed for 3,334 yards and 18 touchdowns in his career. He’s has also added 158 catches and 5 touchdowns in his career.

He has 3836 career rushing yards and 27 touchdowns. He has also caught 98 passes in his career with 4 of them going for touchdowns.

#17 Detroit Lions took Gosder Cherilus. Cherilus has played in 75 games for the Lions starting 70 of those games.

Flacco has started all 80 games since being drafted. He’s put up 17,633 yards and 102 touchdowns in his career. The Ravens won the Super Bowl last season and Flacco was the M.V.P.

#19 Carolina Panthers took Jeff Otah. Otah started 25 games combined for the Panthers in 2008 and 2009 before missing the 2010 season. He came back to start 4 games in the 2011 season, but that was it.

He had 18 interceptions for Tampa Bay while playing for them and took 3 of them back for touchdowns. Talib had some off field issues and has been suspended for them.

#21 Atlanta Falcons took Sam Baker. After picking Matt Ryan earlier in the draft the Falcons wanted someone to help protect him. Baker played in 65 games for the Falcons starting 56 of them. He started 15 games for them last season.

#22 Dallas Cowboys took Felix Jones. Jones has had some injury issues in his pro career, but he broke out as a kick returner his rookie season. He’s played in 64 out of a possible 80 games; starting 23 of them. He has a total of 2728 yards rushing for his career with 11 touchdowns. He has returned 1 kickoff for a touchdown; in his rookie season.

#23 Pittsburgh Steelers took Rashard Mendenhall. Mendenhall was the second of three running backs to go in a row and he’s another one that has had some injury problems. He’s played in 57 games starting 48 of them. He has also broken the 1000 marker twice in his career. He has totaled 3549 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns for his career. Due to injuries Mendenhall was only able to play in 6 games last season.

#24 Tennessee Titans took Chris Johnson. Johnson has topped a 1000 yards every year since being drafted and in 2009 went over the 2000 yard mark by 6 yards. He’s only missed 1 game in his career and has made 77 starts for the Titans. He has rushed for 6888 yards and 44 touchdowns in his career. He has carried the ball 1463 times and averages 4.7 yards a carry for his career.

#25 Dallas Cowboys took Mike Jenkins. Jenkins has played in 71 games since being drafted and has started 48 of them. He has 8 career interceptions and has 1 interception return for a touchdown. Jenkins was also made the Pro Bowl in 2009.

#26 Houston Texans took Duane Brown. Brown has played in 75 games in his career and has started every one of them. He missed 4 games in 2010 with an injury and 1 game last season. Brown was a pro bowler for the 2012 season and a 1st team all pro.

#27 San Diego Chargers took Antoine Cason. Cason has played in all 80 games since being drafted and has started 49 of those games. He has 12 career interceptions and 1 interception return for a touchdown. Cason has also returned punts for the Chargers; mostly in the 2010 season.

#28 Seattle Seahawks took Lawrence Jackson. Jackson only played two seasons with the Seahawks. He played in 32 games and started 24 of them. He also totaled 6.5 sacks while in a Seahawks uniform. Jackson has played the last three seasons with the Detroit Lions.

#29 San Francisco 49ers took Kentwan Balmer. Balmer played in 27 games for the 49ers. He didn’t start any of them. He recorded 11 tackles in 2 seasons, but no sacks. In 2010 he played for Seattle and the last two seasons he has been with the Washington Redskins.

#30 New York Jets took Dustin Keller. Keller has played in 72 games for the Jets starting 49 of them. He has 241 career receptions for 2876 yards and 17 touchdowns. Keller was injured for a lot of the 2012 season playing in 8 games and starting 5. Signed with the Miami Dolphins this off-season.

#31 New York Giants took Kenny Phillips. This was the last pick of the 1st round. New England had their pick taken away as a penalty for the Spygate mess. Phillips has had some injury issues in his career. He has played in 56 games for the Giants starting 41 of them. He only played in 2 games in 2009 because of injuries and last season he appeared in 7 games. He has 8 career interceptions with 4 of them being picked off in 2011.

As far as awards go this may be the toughest of all to pick a winner. There where so many good rookies in the NFL this season that even getting a ballot of five together meant leaving a couple of players out. The advantage to this is everyone has their opinion and this is how my ballot shakes out.

Andrew Luck is the NFL Rookie of the Year on my ballot. Luck led the Indianapolis Colts to a 10-5 record and a playoff spot. Luck threw for 21 touchdowns and 4183 yards; he also rushed for 5 touchdowns. There where a lot of expectations put on Luck being the #1 overall pick in the draft and he handled them well. The only negative to his rookie season where the 18 interceptions he threw. Since the Colts went to picking #1 in the draft with just a couple of wins to a playoffs spot this season that helps boost Luck to the NFL’s Rookie of the Year.

This is a close call but I put Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins second on my ballot. He could just as well be the Rookie of the Year but I went with Luck. Griffin threw for 3100 yards and 20 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions. Griffin has also ran for 752 yards and 6 touchdowns. If the Redskins can get a win in their last game of the season against the Dallas Cowboys they’ll make the playoffs. Griffin has led the Redskins to a 9-6 record this season but has missed a game and parts of a couple others due to injuries. Even with that Griffin would be a good choice as a Rookie of the Year.

Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks is third on my ballot. Wilson a third round draft pick is one of the biggest surprises this season. Most people thought he’d sit behind free agent singing Matt Flynn but Wilson went to camp and won the starting job. He led Seattle to a 10-5 record and a playoff birth. Wilson has thrown for 2868 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also added 3 rushing touchdowns this season. Wilson has played just as well as Luck or Griffin and I wouldn’t be surprised if he won Rookie of the Year.

Enough with the quarterbacks for now. Alfred Morris of the Washington Redskins comes in at #4 on my ballot. Morris had to of been the steal of the draft. Morris was taken in the 6th round with the 173rd pick. Morris has carried the ball 302 times this season. Morris has rushed for 1413 and 10 touchdowns while averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Morris is the perfect to compliment to quarterback Robert Griffin III (#2 on my ballot). The Redskins are 9-6 with their make or break game coming up this Sunday against Dallas.

If he was good enough to be considered Defensive Player of the Year then Luke Kuechly Middle Linebacker of the Carolina Panthers should get consideration for Rookie of the Year. He leads the NFL on tackles with 151. Of course being a Middle Linebacker, he doesn’t put up huge sack numbers; he has 1. Kuechly has intercepted 2 passes this season to go along with all his tackles. In a down year for the Panthers (6-9) Kuechly is a bright spot for their defense.

There you go pick one of mine or come up with your own Rookie of the Year. You can follow me on Twitter @Burketime

This is a tough award to pick and may be the toughest of all to select a top coach. There are quite a few good candidates for this award. Everyone has a favorite coach; so here’s the way I have them for this season.

My choice for NFL Coach of the Year is Bruce Arians of the Indianapolis Colts. To tell you the truth I don’t even know if he qualifies for the award. His job is offensive coordinator but he’s filled in this season as head coach while Chuck Pagano recovers from cancer treatments. The Colts are 10-5 while Arians has filled in and are in the playoffs. Pagano came back to his job Monday but Arians did a fantastic job while filling in. Not to mention the work he did with Andrew Luck. If he doesn’t qualify for the award they should change it and just give this award to Bruce Arians.

In any other year Mike Smith of the Atlanta Falcons would probably win Coach of the Year. The Falcons are 13-2 with a game to go and I believe have clinched home filed advantage throughout the playoffs. Smith and the Falcons still have a lot to prove even though they’ve done so well in the regular season. I think the Falcons need to win a playoff game or two and even though they say it doesn’t affect these awards I think in a voters mind I think it does. Anyway Smith has done a good job with the Falcons this season and should get a lot of votes for Coach of the Year.

3rd on my ballot is Gary Kubiak of the Houston Texans. The Texans are 12-3 and at times have looked like a Super Bowl contender. The Texans a lot like the Falcons have to prove something come playoff time, but for the regular season Kubiak keeps this team winning. Houston maybe the most balanced team in the NFL and of course that’s where coaching comes in. If the Texans can get a win this week (@Indianapolis) and clinch home field though the playoffs in the AFC that could help Kubiak get so extra votes.

Mike Shanahan of the Washington Redskins comes in fourth on my ballot. The Redskins are 9-6 and have a win and you’re in-game this week against the Dallas Cowboys. Shanahan has a rookie quarterback in Robert Griffin III and a rookie running back in Alfred Morris but even with that the Redskins have a chance to win their division. There may have been some doubts about Shanahan without having John Elway under center, but this season has helped change some of that. Will see how many ballots Shanahan ends up on.

Maybe Pete Carroll should be higher on my ballot than fifth but that’s where I have him. Seattle is 10-5 so far this season and no one wants to play them in Seattle. Carroll went with a rookie quarterback in Russell Wilson over free agent signing Matt Flynn and the choice turned out to be right. Carroll also has the second leading rusher in the NFL in Marshawn Lynch. The Seahawks are a playoff team this season and that helps put Carroll on my list because I don’t think anyone had Seattle in the playoffs at the start of the season.

There you go feel free to compare my picks to yours and as always follow me on Twitter @Burketime

When you mention the award for Defensive Player of the Year two guys come right to mind. They could really be 1 and 1a and I wouldn’t be surprise if at the end of the season they end up splitting the award. I didn’t take the easy way out like that and I went with one over the other. There’s still one game to go and if one of them went nuts it could have a huge effect on voting. Anyway, here’s my ballot.

I went with J.J. Watt, defensive end for the Houston Texans. Watt sits at 20.5 sacks right now and like I mentioned there is one game to go. The Texans are 12-3 and are looking at a bye in the playoffs. The Houston defense is giving up 20.2 points per game and Watt is a big part of that. Watt is also putting up these numbers even though Brian Cushing was lost for the season.

Aldon Smith is second on my ballot. Smith is only one sack behind Watt at 19.5. Smith is a big reason the 49ers defense ranks in the top ten in all the major stats. Third in points allowed at 17.3; fourth in passing yards allowed at 199.7; sixth in rushing yards at 96.8 for an overall ranking of second at 296.5 yards per game. The 49ers are in the playoffs this season and are 10-4-1 with a game to go.

As I look past sack totals for the third spot on my ballot I’m going with Luke Kuechly. Kuechly is the middle linebacker for the Carolina Panthers and while the Panthers have had a down year at 6-9; Kuechly leads the NFL with 151 tackles. Last time I checked tackling was an important part of the game. My guess is Kuechly will be over looked on most ballots, but I believe he belongs on the list.

Von Miller and his 17.5 sacks ends up in the fourth spot on my ballot. He’s the leader of the Denver Broncos defense and that defense has helped the Broncos go 12-3 this season. The Broncos are third in yards allowed per game at 302.2 this season; fifth in points allowed per game at 19.1 and third in rush yards allowed per game at 91.0. All good reason to include Miller in the Defensive Player of the Year talk.

Charles Tillman fills out my ballot for Defensive Player of the Year. While Tillman has just three interceptions all three of them have been returned for touchdowns. Tillman does much more for the Bears defense. Tillman has 71 total tackles so far this season, but he has forced 10 fumbles making him dangerous to be around with the football.

It’s always tougher to pick a Defensive Player of the Year, so let me know Who Ya Got? You can follow me on Twitter @Burketime

With one week left in the NFL regular season I thought it might be a good time to hand out some awards. So who is the National Football League Most Valuable Player. There are some good choices for M.V.P. this season, but I think one player was above all the others. Here’s the way my ballot would look. My pick for M.V.P. would be:

Adrian Peterson, running back for the Minnesota Vikings. A.D. yeah I got that right, his nickname is All Day. Is there a better player in the NFL right now? No. He leads the league in rushing right now with 1898 yards and isn’t too far off from breaking the season record for rushing yards. Peterson needs 204 rushing yards this week against Green Bay to set the record. With Percy Harvin injured Peterson has been the only true offensive threat for the Vikings but teams still can’t stop him. Peterson is the player mostly responsible for the Vikings being able to win and you’re in the playoffs situation this weekend. I haven’t even mentioned that he’s coming off major reconstructive knee surgery. With all this considered; Adrian Peterson is this season’s M.V.P.

Behind Peterson for me would be Calvin Johnson; Megatron. I know his team the Detroit Lions are 4-11 at this point in the season but you can’t argue with the numbers he’s put up. 117 catches for 1892 yards an average of 16.2 yards per catch and 5 touchdowns. The Lions offense is Johnson and every team knows it, but he’s still put up these kinds of numbers. Johnson is the best receiver in the NFL and #2 on my M.V.P. ballot.

There are a few quarterbacks names you could throw into a hat and pick one out for this award but I’m going with Peyton Manning. Coming off a neck injury which cost him all of last season. Denver is 12-3 right now and have a chance to end up with the best record in the AFC. They’re second in scoring at 29.5 points per game. Manning has 34 touchdown passes and 4355 passing yards with one game to go.

Marshawn Lynch is the fourth name on my ballot. I know Russell Wilson gets most of the press for Seattle but Lynch is actually second in the NFL in rushing yards at 1490. Seattle is second in the NFL in rushing yards per game at 161.7 yards. Lynch seems kind of hidden in Seattle’s success this season. 10-5 and a playoff berth guaranteed. Lynch while not the M.V.P. this season deserves a lot of credit for where the Seahawks are this season.

In the last spot on my ballot, I’m going with Brandon Marshall. Yeah I know there are four or five quarterbacks I could throw into this spot but I’m going with Marshall. The Bears offense has been embarrassing at times this season and when they throw the ball everyone knows it’s going in Marshall’s direction. Even though teams know this Marshall still caught 113 passes for 1466 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. This is the reason I thought Marshall should get on my ballot.

There you have it my M.V.P. ballot. There is one game to go but I don’t think it would change the way I’ve selected my players. Feel free to let me know what you think.
