As far as awards go this may be the toughest of all to pick a winner. There where so many good rookies in the NFL this season that even getting a ballot of five together meant leaving a couple of players out. The advantage to this is everyone has their opinion and this is how my ballot shakes out.

Andrew Luck is the NFL Rookie of the Year on my ballot. Luck led the Indianapolis Colts to a 10-5 record and a playoff spot. Luck threw for 21 touchdowns and 4183 yards; he also rushed for 5 touchdowns. There where a lot of expectations put on Luck being the #1 overall pick in the draft and he handled them well. The only negative to his rookie season where the 18 interceptions he threw. Since the Colts went to picking #1 in the draft with just a couple of wins to a playoffs spot this season that helps boost Luck to the NFL’s Rookie of the Year.

This is a close call but I put Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins second on my ballot. He could just as well be the Rookie of the Year but I went with Luck. Griffin threw for 3100 yards and 20 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions. Griffin has also ran for 752 yards and 6 touchdowns. If the Redskins can get a win in their last game of the season against the Dallas Cowboys they’ll make the playoffs. Griffin has led the Redskins to a 9-6 record this season but has missed a game and parts of a couple others due to injuries. Even with that Griffin would be a good choice as a Rookie of the Year.

Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks is third on my ballot. Wilson a third round draft pick is one of the biggest surprises this season. Most people thought he’d sit behind free agent singing Matt Flynn but Wilson went to camp and won the starting job. He led Seattle to a 10-5 record and a playoff birth. Wilson has thrown for 2868 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also added 3 rushing touchdowns this season. Wilson has played just as well as Luck or Griffin and I wouldn’t be surprised if he won Rookie of the Year.

Enough with the quarterbacks for now. Alfred Morris of the Washington Redskins comes in at #4 on my ballot. Morris had to of been the steal of the draft. Morris was taken in the 6th round with the 173rd pick. Morris has carried the ball 302 times this season. Morris has rushed for 1413 and 10 touchdowns while averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Morris is the perfect to compliment to quarterback Robert Griffin III (#2 on my ballot). The Redskins are 9-6 with their make or break game coming up this Sunday against Dallas.

If he was good enough to be considered Defensive Player of the Year then Luke Kuechly Middle Linebacker of the Carolina Panthers should get consideration for Rookie of the Year. He leads the NFL on tackles with 151. Of course being a Middle Linebacker, he doesn’t put up huge sack numbers; he has 1. Kuechly has intercepted 2 passes this season to go along with all his tackles. In a down year for the Panthers (6-9) Kuechly is a bright spot for their defense.

This is a tough award to pick and may be the toughest of all to select a top coach. There are quite a few good candidates for this award. Everyone has a favorite coach; so here’s the way I have them for this season.

My choice for NFL Coach of the Year is Bruce Arians of the Indianapolis Colts. To tell you the truth I don’t even know if he qualifies for the award. His job is offensive coordinator but he’s filled in this season as head coach while Chuck Pagano recovers from cancer treatments. The Colts are 10-5 while Arians has filled in and are in the playoffs. Pagano came back to his job Monday but Arians did a fantastic job while filling in. Not to mention the work he did with Andrew Luck. If he doesn’t qualify for the award they should change it and just give this award to Bruce Arians.

In any other year Mike Smith of the Atlanta Falcons would probably win Coach of the Year. The Falcons are 13-2 with a game to go and I believe have clinched home filed advantage throughout the playoffs. Smith and the Falcons still have a lot to prove even though they’ve done so well in the regular season. I think the Falcons need to win a playoff game or two and even though they say it doesn’t affect these awards I think in a voters mind I think it does. Anyway Smith has done a good job with the Falcons this season and should get a lot of votes for Coach of the Year.

3rd on my ballot is Gary Kubiak of the Houston Texans. The Texans are 12-3 and at times have looked like a Super Bowl contender. The Texans a lot like the Falcons have to prove something come playoff time, but for the regular season Kubiak keeps this team winning. Houston maybe the most balanced team in the NFL and of course that’s where coaching comes in. If the Texans can get a win this week (@Indianapolis) and clinch home field though the playoffs in the AFC that could help Kubiak get so extra votes.

Mike Shanahan of the Washington Redskins comes in fourth on my ballot. The Redskins are 9-6 and have a win and you’re in-game this week against the Dallas Cowboys. Shanahan has a rookie quarterback in Robert Griffin III and a rookie running back in Alfred Morris but even with that the Redskins have a chance to win their division. There may have been some doubts about Shanahan without having John Elway under center, but this season has helped change some of that. Will see how many ballots Shanahan ends up on.

Maybe Pete Carroll should be higher on my ballot than fifth but that’s where I have him. Seattle is 10-5 so far this season and no one wants to play them in Seattle. Carroll went with a rookie quarterback in Russell Wilson over free agent signing Matt Flynn and the choice turned out to be right. Carroll also has the second leading rusher in the NFL in Marshawn Lynch. The Seahawks are a playoff team this season and that helps put Carroll on my list because I don’t think anyone had Seattle in the playoffs at the start of the season.

There you go feel free to compare my picks to yours and as always follow me on Twitter @Burketime

When you mention the award for Defensive Player of the Year two guys come right to mind. They could really be 1 and 1a and I wouldn’t be surprise if at the end of the season they end up splitting the award. I didn’t take the easy way out like that and I went with one over the other. There’s still one game to go and if one of them went nuts it could have a huge effect on voting. Anyway, here’s my ballot.

I went with J.J. Watt, defensive end for the Houston Texans. Watt sits at 20.5 sacks right now and like I mentioned there is one game to go. The Texans are 12-3 and are looking at a bye in the playoffs. The Houston defense is giving up 20.2 points per game and Watt is a big part of that. Watt is also putting up these numbers even though Brian Cushing was lost for the season.

Aldon Smith is second on my ballot. Smith is only one sack behind Watt at 19.5. Smith is a big reason the 49ers defense ranks in the top ten in all the major stats. Third in points allowed at 17.3; fourth in passing yards allowed at 199.7; sixth in rushing yards at 96.8 for an overall ranking of second at 296.5 yards per game. The 49ers are in the playoffs this season and are 10-4-1 with a game to go.

As I look past sack totals for the third spot on my ballot I’m going with Luke Kuechly. Kuechly is the middle linebacker for the Carolina Panthers and while the Panthers have had a down year at 6-9; Kuechly leads the NFL with 151 tackles. Last time I checked tackling was an important part of the game. My guess is Kuechly will be over looked on most ballots, but I believe he belongs on the list.

Von Miller and his 17.5 sacks ends up in the fourth spot on my ballot. He’s the leader of the Denver Broncos defense and that defense has helped the Broncos go 12-3 this season. The Broncos are third in yards allowed per game at 302.2 this season; fifth in points allowed per game at 19.1 and third in rush yards allowed per game at 91.0. All good reason to include Miller in the Defensive Player of the Year talk.

Charles Tillman fills out my ballot for Defensive Player of the Year. While Tillman has just three interceptions all three of them have been returned for touchdowns. Tillman does much more for the Bears defense. Tillman has 71 total tackles so far this season, but he has forced 10 fumbles making him dangerous to be around with the football.

It’s always tougher to pick a Defensive Player of the Year, so let me know Who Ya Got? You can follow me on Twitter @Burketime

With one week left in the NFL regular season I thought it might be a good time to hand out some awards. So who is the National Football League Most Valuable Player. There are some good choices for M.V.P. this season, but I think one player was above all the others. Here’s the way my ballot would look. My pick for M.V.P. would be:

Adrian Peterson, running back for the Minnesota Vikings. A.D. yeah I got that right, his nickname is All Day. Is there a better player in the NFL right now? No. He leads the league in rushing right now with 1898 yards and isn’t too far off from breaking the season record for rushing yards. Peterson needs 204 rushing yards this week against Green Bay to set the record. With Percy Harvin injured Peterson has been the only true offensive threat for the Vikings but teams still can’t stop him. Peterson is the player mostly responsible for the Vikings being able to win and you’re in the playoffs situation this weekend. I haven’t even mentioned that he’s coming off major reconstructive knee surgery. With all this considered; Adrian Peterson is this season’s M.V.P.

Behind Peterson for me would be Calvin Johnson; Megatron. I know his team the Detroit Lions are 4-11 at this point in the season but you can’t argue with the numbers he’s put up. 117 catches for 1892 yards an average of 16.2 yards per catch and 5 touchdowns. The Lions offense is Johnson and every team knows it, but he’s still put up these kinds of numbers. Johnson is the best receiver in the NFL and #2 on my M.V.P. ballot.

There are a few quarterbacks names you could throw into a hat and pick one out for this award but I’m going with Peyton Manning. Coming off a neck injury which cost him all of last season. Denver is 12-3 right now and have a chance to end up with the best record in the AFC. They’re second in scoring at 29.5 points per game. Manning has 34 touchdown passes and 4355 passing yards with one game to go.

Marshawn Lynch is the fourth name on my ballot. I know Russell Wilson gets most of the press for Seattle but Lynch is actually second in the NFL in rushing yards at 1490. Seattle is second in the NFL in rushing yards per game at 161.7 yards. Lynch seems kind of hidden in Seattle’s success this season. 10-5 and a playoff berth guaranteed. Lynch while not the M.V.P. this season deserves a lot of credit for where the Seahawks are this season.

In the last spot on my ballot, I’m going with Brandon Marshall. Yeah I know there are four or five quarterbacks I could throw into this spot but I’m going with Marshall. The Bears offense has been embarrassing at times this season and when they throw the ball everyone knows it’s going in Marshall’s direction. Even though teams know this Marshall still caught 113 passes for 1466 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. This is the reason I thought Marshall should get on my ballot.

There you have it my M.V.P. ballot. There is one game to go but I don’t think it would change the way I’ve selected my players. Feel free to let me know what you think.

This Old Stub: Fathers Day

Posted: December 24, 2012 by Sports Time Radio in baseball, sports, Uncategorized

20121223-165219.jpg

This past summer my wife Katie decided that we’d take our fathers to a Cubs game for Fathers Day and it just so happens the Red Sox are in town for the weekend. We end up dragging her brother David, who is a White Sox fan, her sister Amy, Katie & I and our fathers. 6 people, really not enough to want to pay to park for two cars. So we decide that Amy’s car which was a KIA something(I’m not that great remembering car names) Explorer type truck. Katie had said she would ride in the back hatch and being the wonderful husband I am, I said I’d ride in the back. This is where I’m supposed to say something like, “and it was the longest ride of my life” and it was.
I hop in the back, pull the door down close and attempt to get comfortable. I sit to the side trying to extend my legs to the other side as I do my body begins to push it self up and my head is now crammed to the roof with my neck forcefully cranked to the side. I maneuver my self Indian style directly in the middle with no padding, just sitting on the thin mat and steal with the top of my head just barely grazing the roof. One small bump and its toast for my skull. So after about 20 mins, I can feel a slight cramp in my hip flexors but I know if I make any movements it’ll just make it worse. Plus with traffic in the Loop the way it is there’s no stopping till we get there. I don’t know where it started, maybe it was all the stop & go traffic by Soldier Field. Or maybe it was on Lake Shore Drive by the Field Museum. Either way the next 20 mins felt like days until we’d reach Wrigleyville. Amy isn’t a bad driver at all, but thanks to my mother, I get car sick if I’m not driving but I don’t want to drive. Yea I know try being inside my mind. Every tiny little bump in the road, curve. If we’re stopping, then going, stopping, my head gets heavier and heavier, side to side. There’s something in my gut waiting to come up. Finally we’re passing Chicago street, the traffic lets up and it’s a little smoother until Belmont. Amy exits Belmont, but when you do you must stay in the right lane because its a quick turn but not only that with all the traffic if you miss Inner Lake Shore Drive, have fun cruising through the neighborhood. We’re headed North, finally Addison street, hang a left but I can’t take it anymore. I jump out on Belmont, my Brother in law walks with me the rest of the way, plus he wanted a smoke. Finally we are entering the gates. We grab some food and head straight to our seats. I wish we could have been one of the first 5000 people to get the free seat cushion but you can’t win them all.

The Cubs send Paul Maholm to the mound vs Boston’s Franklin Morales. Leading off former White Sox & 2005 World Series winner, Scott Podsednik sends a line drive to center and scores when Dustin Pedroia hits his 16th double of the season. Kevin Youkilis sends Pedroia to third on a fly out to Reed Johnson in right field. With the shift on for David Ortiz, Big Papi still sends a fastball to right, scoring Pedroia. Mike Aviles & Darnell McDonald both fly out ending the inning, 2-0 BoSox. Reed Johnson leads off with a double but Darwin Barney keeps him at second with a pop out to shortstop. Batting 3rd, Starlin Castro takes a change up but sends a curve ball to center scoring Reed and ending up with a triple. Alfonso Soriano steps up to the plate and goes down swinging. Jeff Baker strands Castro at 3rd on a ground ball to Ortiz.
The second inning has Kelly Shoppach called out on strikes and both Ryan Kalish and Franklin Morales going down swinging. The Cubs send Joe Mather, Wellington Castillo and Luis Valbuena to go down in order. Pods leads off the 3rd with a ground out but Pedroia singles. With a 3-2 count on Youk the ninth pitch sees a hit & run but fails with Youk going down swinging and Dustin caught stealing. Malholm leads off with a K & Reed grounds out. Barney steps to the plate & singles to center then scores when Castro pops up to Pedroia ending up at second with his 10th double. But is again stranded on base when Soriano grounds out. At the end of 3 we’re all tied up.

Big Papi leads off the 4th with his 16th home run of the season giving the lead back to Boston. That’s all the action until the top of the 5th when, Red Sox pitcher Morales singles but the inning is ended when Scotty P hits into a 4-6-3 DP and is replaced with Daniel Nava due to an injured groin. The cubs go down in order and we end up in the 6th. With one out Youk walks but is left at first. Matt Albers steps in for Morales. Barney reaches on an error by Youkilis and moves over to second on a single by Castro. Soriano finally reaches but on a fielders choice but Castro is out at second. Jeff Baker reaches on a missed force attempt everyone is safe including Barney who scores to tie the game at 3. Mather & Castillo both groundout to end the inning.

Top 7. The double switch is on, Maholm out, Shawn Camp in batting sixth replacing Mather, sending Reed to Center and bringing in David DeJesus to play right and bat ninth. Darnell McDonald doubles. Jarrod Saltalamacchia steps in for Shoppach singling to right. With a visit to the mound, Camp is out & James Russell is in giving up a single to Ryan Kalish scoring McDonald. Will Middlebrooks pinch hits for Albers sending a sac fly to score Jarrod S. Kalish is able to move to third on a throwing error by Castillo. Nava sac bunts to Russel scoring Kalish and taking the lead by 3. Pedroia pops out to end the inning. Saltalamacchia stays in & Andrew Miller heads to the mound leading off the inning by walking Valbuena but is throw out trying to steal second. DeJesus flies out and Boston decides to bring in Mark Melancon who hits Johnson but gets Darwin to end the inning by grounding out.

Into the 8th, the Cubs replace Russel with Jairo Asencio. Youk leads off with a single but is forced out at second. Big Papi on first, Aviles walks. Darnell up to bat hits it to Starlin but on a throwing error everyone is safe with bases loaded for Saltalamacchia who ends up at first on a force attempt scoring Ortiz. Kalish flies out to end the inning. BoSox go with the double switch taking Youk out for Nick Punto and Scott Atchison steps to the mound, who retires Castro & Soriano on 5 pitches. Steve Clevenger pinch hits for Baker but ends the inning. Punto & Nava both single to start the 9th but Pedroia flies out. Adrian Gonzalez replaces Atchison and strikes out swinging but the double steal is executed. Cubs decided to intentionally walk Ortiz but are able to get Aviles to end the inning.

Bottom 9, the Cubs down by four but anything can happen. A-Gon stays in at 1st, Ortiz out and Alfredo Aceves in to finish the game. Tony Campana, Castillo & Valbuena all single to load the bases. DeJesus up to bat with bases loaded sends a fly ball deep to center field but its caught scoring Campana and moving everyone up a base. Down by 3, Johnson steps in the box…..and is called out on strikes. Men on second and third with the potential tying run at the plate, Darwin takes the first pitch. Aceves sends a 93mph fastball, Barney connects sends it in the air but 3rd basemen Punto is able to bring it to end the game. Albers gets the win and Camp gets the loss. Well at least they didn’t get swept.

Win or lose, there’s nothing like going to Wrigley Field to watch baseball. Needless to say after the exciting ride there, I chose to be crunched in the middle in the back seat. The ride going home was uneventful. All in all it was a great day, spending the day with our Fathers on Fathers Day at the ballpark. I do wish though we could have been sitting in the seats in the ticket on the picture above but we still had a great view. The view in the pics above are from the seats we actually sat in which I added below. If your ever looking for tickets at Wrigley, I’ve pretty much sat everywhere in the park, so email me @ SportsTimeRadio@hotmail.com or you can always tweet me

Week 14 Start’em and Sit’em

Posted: December 8, 2012 by Sports Time Radio in Uncategorized

Week 14 has a lot of great story lines.

Who will separate themselves in the Rookie of the year race?  I see it as a three horse race between Luck, RGIII and Wilson.

Is this the AFC championship preview?  New England hosts the Texans in what should be a great game.

Can the Steelers keep their playoff dreams alive?  The last spot comes down to Bengals and Steelers.

Now Which is the better division, all year everyone proclaimed the NFC as the better division, but I don’t see it that way anymore.

Let’s get into this week’s Fantasy Start’em and Sit’em

Quarterbacks Start’ems.

  • Eli Manning – Big day against a bad Tampa Defense and it is December.  Look for the Gaints to get really hot down the stretch.
  • Joe Flacco-Washington has a bad pass defense.  Ranked 31st against the pass, Flacco has a great afternoon.
  • Andrew Luck- Will be rookie of the year and we are watching something special developing this season in Indy, add in a bad Tennessee team=big afternoon.
  • Matthew Stafford –Has the best receiver in the NFL and Green Bay gives up yards thru the air.

Quarterback Sit’em

  • Phillip Rivers –Nothing left to play for and faces best defense in the NFL.
  • Jay Cutler-Great QB, bad system faces decent defense means bad numbers
  • Tony Romo- Bengals pass defense is under rated.  Romo will have trouble moving the ball.
  •  Russell Wilson-Is now in the Rookie of the year conversation after beating the Bears.  He will have a tough night against the Cardinals.

Running Back Start’em

  • Steven Jackson-87 rushes/369 yds/1 TD over the last 4 games.  This includes 2 games against the 49ers.  Buffalo is 30th against the rush, expect his production to be high.
  • Jamaal Charles-K.C has found its rushing attack. Charles has Averaged 105 yds a game over the last 4.  Lokk for this to continue this week.
  •  Chris Johnson- He has struggle the last 2 weeks, but he a colts defense that is not very good against the rush.  He gets things back on track this week.
  • Ben Jarvus Green-Elis– Faces a middle of the road rush defense and they will be keying in on A.J. Green and the pass defense.

Running Back Sit’ems

  • Bryce Brown-I know he has been putting up BIG numbers since starting, but this week he faces the best run defense.
  • Reggie Bush Faces 3rd rank rush defense
  • Ryan Mathews– he has been struggling on posting 53 yds a game and 0 TDs over the past 5 games.  Now he faces the number defense in the NFL.
  • Steven Ridley Has scored in his last 4 games.  Houston is stout against the run and Ridley will have a tough night.

Wide Receiver Start’em

  • Hakeem Nicks-Faces the 30th rank pass defense.
  • Jeremy Maclin- Faces worst Pass Defense in the NFL.
  •  Chris Givens-20 targets/16 Rec/207 yds/1 TD over the last 2 games.  This continues against Buffalo’s middle of the road pass Defense.
  • Torrey Smith-He is being targeted a minimum of 8 times a game over the last 4 games combined with the NFL’s worst pass defense.  He should put up good numbers this week.

Wide Receiver Sit’em

  • Larry Fitzgerald-He is one of the best receivers in the NFL, but no QB and a tough physical Seattle defense means another bad night.
  • Stevie Johnson-His production has been up over the last 4 games, but the Rams defense is better than they get credit for.  It will be tough game for him.
  • Brian Hartline-Faces 2nd best pass Defense
  • Steve Smith(Car)- 6 for 52 YDs when he faced Atlanta in September.  Atlanta is looking to clinch the number 1 seed.  His numbers will be similar to last time.

Tight End Start’em

  • Owen Daniels-Great situation against New England.
  • Jason Witten-Romo will be looking for his check down all night.
  • Jermaine Gresham-Who be open a lot
  • Heath Miller – Big Ben returns

Tight End Sit’em

  • Brandon Pettigrew– Not the main Tight end anymore.
  • Antonio Gates– They’ve packed it in
  • Jermichael Finley-Over rated
  • Brent Celek-not been productive
