The Cubs look to break the hole they dug themselves losing 6 out of 7 games.  The Great One, Jake Arrieta is seeking his 12th win of the season against the Reds Dan Strailey.  The Cubs wouldn’t let the former Cubs get past the 4th inning.  Kris Bryant would start the scoring in the top of the 1st with his 18th double bringing in Jadon Heyward and he’d score on Miguel Mobtero’s sac fly.  The Reds would strike back and tie it up in the bottom of the first with Adam Duvall’s 17th double to left scoring Billy Hamilton and Joey Votto.

In Kris Bryant’s second at bat in the top of third, he’d send a fly ball to left center for his 19th home run of the year.  Just like chess, in a counter move Jay Bruce would send Zack Cozart across home on a ground ball single to center, tieing the game at 3.

After Chris Coghlan and Arrieta start the first with singles on one out, Heyward drives in Chris on a line drive to center.  Bryant would jack his 20th homer of the season to left driving in Arrieta and Heyward.  After just 3 & 2/3 innings, Strailey would be pulled to make it a bullpen day for the Reds.  Jumbo Diaz would get out of the inning after giving up a single to Russel.  Jake would allow to baserunners in the bottom half but does not allow any runs.  Cubs 7-3.

With Michael Lorenzen on the mound and two outs, Arrieta cracks his 2nd home run of the season adding to his lead but would cut his lead to 3 in the bottom half by walking Billy Hamilton then giving up a home run to Jay Bruce.  He does get out of the inning.  Cubs 8-5.

Bryant would continue his in game hitting streak with a double to lead off the 6th but wouldn’t cross the plate.  Trevor Cahill enters the bottom of the 6th walking Jose Peraza who then scores on Tucker Barnhart’s double to right.  He would get two outs but after a single to Billy Hanilton, Joel Maddon would bring in Travis Wood.

Russ Olendorf enters the 7th getting the first 1-2-3 inning of the game.  Wood gets the first out in the bottom half but gives up a double to Duvall who makes it to third after Pedro Strop comes in getting the second out of the inning.  Duvall does score from 3rd on Pedro’s wild pitch.

Olendorf seems to be calming the Cubs down by retiring his 5th batter in a row but with two outs gives up back to back dingers to Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo but does get out of the inning.  Strop makes it a 1-2-3 bottom of the 8th after a bunch of defensive changes by Maddon.

Albert Almora, Jr entered the game in the bottom of 8th leading off the 9th with a single against Blake Wood.  Russel would cause Jose Peraza to commit an error to reach 1st.  Javier Baez would send a line drive to center scoring Almora but trying to stretch it to two gets caught at 2cd base.  Wood gets out of the inning.  Cubs 11-7.

Joel Peralta enters the game for the Cubs to shut down the Reds and gets Billy Hamilton to strikeout but gives up a solo homer to Joey Votto.  He gets the next out but Maddon brings in Hector Rondon to get Duvall to pop out to end the game.

While the Cubs did win, not the best outing for the Great One and the bullpen.  Jake goes only 5 innings giving up 5 runs on 4 hits striking out 4.  The bullpen gave up 3 runs on 4 hits.  It may have been a different outcome if not for Kris Bryant’s 5 for 5 with 3 home runs driving in 6 RBI’s.   Either way, Cubs win!

Cubs sought to split the series in Miami to start this 11 game road trip in a wining fashion.  Jason Hammel and the Cubs would hope to split the series with the Marlins, who had their Ace scheduled for the Sunday ballgame.  Hammel is also serving for his first win since June 4th against the Diamondbacks.   That would not be the case today as the Marlins would win and take the series 3-1.

Let’s just get the offensive side out of the way.  Fernandez would get his 10th win of the season on 7 innings giving up only 1 run on 4 hits.  He would walk 3 but strike out 13 batters.  Rizzo would get the first hit in the second inning.  He’d give up the second hit of the game to his counterpart, Hammel, walks Ben Zobrist and gives up a single to Jason Heyward to load the bases.  Kris Bryant would score the second out of the inning but the first and only run of the game.  Contreras would score the second walk on Fernandez in the 4th but gets caught stealing second base.  Heyward would snag a single in the 6th and Rizzo would try to get things going in the top of the 9th with a single but that would be all the action the Cubs would see for the day.

Jason Hammel and the bullpen would not have their best outing with everyone contributing to earned run category.  The Marlins would strike first as Hammel walks Justin Bour and then scores on Derek Dietrich’s double center field.  He would put 4 batters on in the 3, 4, and 5th innings but would start the 6th off with a double to Giancarlo Stanton and moves to third as Bour flys out.  Dietrich would get beaned to get on first.  With a man on 1st and 3rd, Andy Hechavarria would ground into an RBI double play that is challenged and overturned to be scored as just a force out.  After 6 complete innings, Hammel giving up only 2 runs on 4 hits striking out 3.  In the beginning of the year that would have been enough with the Cubs offense securing the win but not today.

Travis Wood enters the 7th inning striking out a batter but gives up 2 hits and a run to have Maddon bring in Justin Grimm also strikes out a batter  and gets Bour to groundout to end the inning.

After Grimm gives up a single to start the bottom of the 8th, he would be replaced by Spencer Patton who gets the first two outs of the inning but gives up a single to Miguel Rojas.  That would be enough for Maddon as he brings in Gerardo Concepcion who walks Ichiro Suzuki.  Martin Prado would smack a double to center scoring both Dietrich and Rojas but would get Christin Yelich to ground out to end the inning.

After 8 innings, 6 runs would be all the Marlins need to knock off the Cubs and take the series.  Let’s hope the series goes much better in Cincinnati.

Heart don’t stop. No Giant leading the vote at his respective position in 2016? Is nothing sacred? With San Francisco in first place, seven games in front of Los Angeles in the NL West, shouldn’t there be at least one? Buster Posey, maybe?

The more important question is, does any serious Giants fan care?

Recent history clearly demonstrates that the Orange and Black have been disrespected since the beginning of their successful binge in the National League, back in 2010. Every single series has listed the Giants as underdogs, including all three of the World Series confrontations.
In the current MLB Power Polls, San Francisco still takes a back seat to Chicago, a team most recently swept in a three-game series by the St. Louis Cardinals. I find this interesting because the 31-9 (77.5%) record posted by the Giants over the past 40 games compares rather favorably to that of the Cubs during the same stretch: 23-17 (57.5%).

And the Cubs are still ranked first?

So now Chicago fans have stuffed the ballot boxes to get their darlings onto the All-Star squad, and Giants fans are supposed to be miffed?

Speaking for myself, I prefer the bling that is attached to the playoffs, rather than that which is attached to individual accolades. Do I think Buster Posey is the best catcher in the league?

I know he is.

Do I care that he may have to take a back seat to Yadier Molina?
Not one iota.
Do I care that the Cubs have Anthony Rizzo (1B), Ben Zobrist (2B), Addison Russell (SS), Kris Bryant (3B), and Dexter Fowler (CF) starting the mid-season Classic, ahead of Brandon Belt (1B), Joe Panik (2B), Brandon Crawford (SS), Matt Duffy (3B) and Denard Span (CF)?

Not one iota.
I could look up the names of the Giants All-Stars from 2010, 2012 and 2014, but I could not name one for certain off the top of my head. It all kind of blends together. On the other hand, I haven no problem remembering who won the World Series each of those three years: the Orange and Black.
You get my drift?
It’s the big picture I am focused on, not the immediate one. In July I am thinking only of barbecues, beer and fireworks. I like to watch the All-Star game as much as the next guy, but not to see Giants players. No way. I want to see which league gets home-field advantage during the playoffs, because I prefer October’s Big Stage to July’s.
So let the Cubs bask in the glow of their July fireworks, with all the glitz and glitter of the All-Star game in San Diego, and let their fans enjoy the thrill of their players’ success. Giants players can use the All-Star break to rest up for the second half of the season, one which extends into October, when the smell of wood-smoke lingers in the air.
I prefer those October nights when I have to bundle up if I want to see major league baseball. I enjoy the fall colors radiating in the late afternoon sun, shadows making their presence known. You know, Orange and Black.
And I love the smell of that wood smoke from the Giants’ victory bonfires.

Joel Maddon would go back to his pitcher batting in the 8 hole  with Albert Almora, Jr batting 9th and keeping Wilson Contreras in the game in left field.  Kris Bryant would be batting 2cd and would start the game with a double but wouldn’t reach again until he walks in the 9th. Aside from Contreras’s walk that would be all in the 1st.  Lackey would lead off the bottom of the first walking Ichiro Suziki who would score on Chrstian Yelich’s sac fly to center.  The Cubs would strike back in the second with Miguel Montero’s solo shot to right tieing the game at 1 at run a piece.

The top of the third would see the patient rookie Wilson walk on two outs, Javier Baez would get hit by a pitch setting up Addison Russell for a three run blast to left center.  Cubs up 4-3.

Lackey would retire 7 straight batters until he walks Giancarlo Stanton in the bottom of the 4th, then Justin Bour launches his 14th homer run of the season bringing the Cubs lead to 1.  John gets the first out in the 5th but gives up a single to Ichiro who scores again on Martin Prado’s double to left.  With the game tied, Lackey walks Yelich prompting Maddon to visit the mound but he after gives up an RBI single to Stanton, Maddon would pull him for Gerardo Concepcion, who on his 4th pitch gives up an RBI double to Bour.  Derek Dietrch would join in the RBI fun with a sac fly to left scoring Stanton.  Marlins up 7-4.

Spencer Patton enters the 6th making it quick but gives up a 2 RBI double to Stanton scoring Prado and Yelich to put the Marlins up by 4 in the 7th bringing Justin Grimm in to finish the inning.

Russel would lead off the 8th with walk and moves to third on Montero’s single to left and then scores on Chris Coghlan’s 3-6-3 double play.  Carl Edwards enters the bottom of the 8th for the Cubs making it a quick 1-2-3 inning.

Dustin McGowen who gave the Cubs a run in the 8th comes back out for the 9th and is the pitcher who gave up the lead off walk to Bryant.  After Anthony Rizzo’s ground out, Wilson Contreras gets his first double of the year scoring Bryant.  This would have the Marlins bring in A. J. Ramos who hits Russell but gets his 24th Save of the season.

John Lackey would only go 4 and 1/3 innings striking out 5 and only walking 3 but gives up 7 runs on 7 hits which 1 was a home run.  The Cubs have the opportunity to split the series on Sunday.

Cubs head south to start the summer.  Jon Lester is on the mound taking on Wei-Yin Chen.  Lester is looking for win number 10 in his first meeting in Miami.

Lester would make it through three innings without any damage.  The fourth inning he would give up the first hit as a single but it would be Giancarlo Stanton’s solo home run for the first run.  He’d give up another solo shot in the sixth to Marcell Ozuna for the second run.  He’d only give up those 2 runs through 7 innings averaging 7 K’s per inning.

The Cubs would strike first in the 4th with a single by Jason Heyward that brought him to third on a fielding error.  Kris Bryant would drive him in a sac fly to left.  The Northsiders wouldn’t grab another run until the top of the 8th when David Ross would launch his 8th home run of the season tieing the game st 2 which should lead us to extra innings.

Pedro Strop enters the game in the 8th getting the first out but gives up a walk to Christian Yelich who scores on Stanton’s ground ball to right.  J.T. Realmuto would drive in Stanton to put the Marlins up by 2. Strop gets out of the inning without any further damage but ends up with a loss as the Cubs couldn’t rebound in the top of the ninth.

Thats four in a row, the bats are on a break but we still have time.

Last night was not a W in Wrigleyville for John Lackey but Jason Hammel hopes to improve to 8-2 when he takes on Adam Wainwright.  Hammel owns a 2-0 record against the Cards this year in St. Louis and looks to make the first of his starts this year at home against the Cards a W.  While the veteran batting lineup seems to have his number, no one has reached 20 at bats against him.

Tonight would not be Hammel’s night going only 5 & 2/3 innings giving up 4 runs in the second and third innings.  Stephen Piscotty would lead off the second with a double scoring on Brandon Moss’s single to center.  In the third, Matt Carpenter would lead off with his 11th home run of the season.  Aledmys Diaz would reach on a single the reaches home on Matt Holiday’s 13th home run of the season giving the Cardinals the lead with 4 runs.

With Adam Warren optioned to Triple-A Iowa and Clayton Richard on the DL, the contract of Gerardo Concepcion is brought up and the fastball pitcher immediately enters the game in the bottom of the 6th striking out Brandon Moss to end the inning and has a 1-2-3 7th inning.  Pedro Strop takes the 8th striking out 2 batters as Travis Wood closes the game out.

The Cubs bats wouldn’t provide enough support for Hammel to get his 8th win of the season.  They would strike first with Chris Coghlan leading off with a single getting pushed to third then scoring on Anthony Rizzo’s sac fly for the first run of the game.

Coghlan would then lead off the third with a walk and immediately scores on Jason Heyward’s 12th double of the year, a line drive to center.  Wilson Contreras and Addison Russsel would both single in the bottom of the 4th with Contreras ending up at 3rd base and then scoring when Albert Almora grounds into a double play.

Cubs lose by 1 in their second straight loss to the Cardinals.  There’s always tomorrow as long as the rain doesn’t stop them.

Game 68 has the St. Louis Cardinals coming to Wrigley for the first time this season with Jamie Garcia taking on John Lackey.  His last outing in St. Louis, he went 7 innings striking out 11 but giving up no runs for his third straight win to open the season.  Tonight he hopes to continue his domination of his former team.  He would get through the first inning giving up a single Aledyms Diaz and walking Stephen Piscotty but giving up no runs.  Jamie Garcia would do the same giving up a single to Ben Zobrist and waking Anthony Rizzo.  Lackey gets himself in to trouble giving up a solo home run to Brandon Moss, then gives up a single to Kolten Wong who moves to second on Garcia’s sac bunt.  Matt Carpenter would walk and end up at second on Diz’s single to left scoring Wong.  Lackey gets out of the inning but the Cards are up 2-0.  Baez would get a single but that would be all the action for the Cubs in the second.  Johnny Peralta leads off the third with a solo home run but Lackey gets out of the inning but not before giving up a single to Wong.

Zo would start off the bottom of the third with a single and scores on Kris Bryant’s 16th double of the season.  With Rizzo at the plate, Garcia would throw a wild pitch moving Bryant to third.  After Rizzo strikes out, Wilson Contreras would get his second RBI of his young career sending a single to center.  Cubs 2, Cardinals 3.

Lackey would score his first 1-2-3 inning with two flyouts and a ground out.  Jamie Grcia would do the same but with two ground outs and a K.  Both men would hit a batter in the 5th but Lackey would give up a single to Stephen Piscotty.  Lackey would score his second 1-2-3 inning of the game.  The bottom half would see a walk to Baez but all three batters would fly out.

Trevor Cahill would replace John Lackey in the top of the seventh getting all three batters out.  Garcia would stay in the game getting the first two outs but gives up a single to Jason Heyward bringing Tommy Pham into the game to face Kris Bryant who flys out to end the inning.

Travis Wood comes into the eighth making it a quick 1-2-3 inning.  Seung Hwan Oh enters the game giving up a single to Rizzo who ends being forced out on Contreras’s double play.  Baez would come up to the plate but goes down swinging.

Justin Grimm comes in the eighth striking out Pham but walks Matt Carpenter who gets caught caught stealing second.  Aledyms Diaz walks and that brings Maddon to the mound for a new pitcher.  Clayton Richard  would come into the game to face Jedd Gyorko giving up a double that Diaz would try to score on but gets caught on Kris Bryant’s relay to Russell.

The Cubs last chance sees Trevor Rosenthal enter the game for the Cards to try and get the save and starts out by striking out Russell.  Albert Almora Jr would double and Chris Coghlan, pinch hitting would get hit to reach first.  Almora would get gunned down at third by Yadier Molina.  Zo would send a single to right field moving Coughlan to third.  Man on first and third with Jason Heyward at the plate but he pops out to end the game for the Cubs.

Not a win for the Cubs and only a small loss for Lackey.  He goes to 7 and 3 but the Cubs at 47 and 21 still hold the best record in the Majors.

Go Cubs Go.

They don’t call it HotAtlanta for nothing!  Jake Arrieta would take on 23 year old Matt Wisler.  In the top of the first with one out, former Brave Jason Heyward would take a 1 and 1 fast ball deep to right  field for his fourth home run of the season.  Cubs 1-0.  Jake would put a base runner on because of a missed catch by Jake. The second inning would see both men having a quick 1-2-3 inning.  Addison Russell and Jake would both get singles and advance on a wild pitch but no runs would score.  Jake would give up a single in the bottom half but no runs for the Braves.

Anthony Rizzo would lead off the fourth with his 14th home run of the season.  Ben Zobrist and Chris Coughlan would hit back to back singles.  No outs, Miguel Montero gets into a pitchers count, 1 ball and 2 strikes, he takes Wisler deep to right field for a 3 run homer.  In the bottom half, Jake would give up a 1 out double to Nick Markakis who scores on Adonis Garcia’s line drive to center.   After 4, Cubs are up 5-1.

Eric O’Flaherty enters the game for the Chop Squad but gives up a lead off single to Heyward.  With no outs, Kris Bryant sends a line drive to left field for his 15th home run of the year.  Jake leads off with a strikeout but hits Ender Inciarte before getting out of the inning.  Cubs up 7-1.

Eric is able to get the first two outs of the sixth but gives up a single to Arrieta who scores on Fowler’s double to center.  The Braves get a base runner on a fielding error by Bryant but the inning ends on AJ Pierzynski’s 1-6-3 double play.  Cubs 8, Braves 1.

Ian Krol enters the game for the Braves giving up a lead off double to Bryant but gets out of the inning.  Arrieta gives up a leadoff walk to Jace Peterson.  He gets the next two outs but gives up a triple to Inciarte scoring Jace.  After 7, Cubs 8, Braves 2.

Alexi Ogando enters the game in the 8th making it a quick 1-2-3 inning.  Arreita was pulled from the game and Travis Wood making it a quick 1-2-3 top of the eighth.

Hunter Cervenka comes into hold the Cubs from scoring any more runs by getting Fowler to strike out.  Heyward doubles them intentionally walks Bryant but would strike out both Rizzo and Zobrist to end the inning.  Trevor Cahill enters the game putting two men on but gets out of the inning with out adding more runs to the Braves board and ending the game.

Jake was seemingly in a slump but whatever the issue was, The Great One is back scoring his 10th win of the season.  The series wraps up tomorrow before the Cubs head to Washington for a 3 game series.

The Cubs are entering game 4 of their 9 game road trip taking on the NL East in Atlanta.  Jason Hammel is looking for his 8th win of the season while the Braves starter Bud Norris is looking to not get his 8th loss of the season.  He starts the game off by striking out the first two batters of the game and a flyout ends the top half of the 1st.  Hammel follows in suit but only getting one strikeout.  Ben Zobrist leads off the 2cd with a single followed by Miguel Montero’s single.  Javier Baez sends a ground ball to short to second to first for a double play.  Russell ends the inning by striking out.  Hammel would get the first out of the bottom half of the second with Nick Markakis’s fly ball into foul territory.  However, he gives up back to back solo home runs to Adonis Garcia and Tyler Flowers.  He does give up singles to Bud Norris and Mallex Smith but gets out of the inning.  Braves up 2-0.

Albert Almora, Jr leads off the top of third with his first double of his career and a wild pitch would push him to third.  Dexter Fowler would ground out to second that scores Almora.  Heyward ends the inning with a ground out.  Chase d’Arnaud reaches on a fielding error by Russell and steals second base.  Hammel would give up one more hit to Adonis Garcia but gets out of the inning striking out Tyler Flowers.  Cubs 1 – Braves 2.

Bud Norris makes the top of the 4ht a 1-2-3 inning.  Jason Hammel hits Jace Peterson who moves to 2cd on Norris’s sac bunt.  Mallex Smith singles pushing Jace to third who then scores on Ender Inciarte’s sac fly to left.  Mallex Smith gets caught trying to advance to second to end the inning.  Cubs 1, Braves 3.  Both men would have easy 1-2-3 innings.  Norris would give up a double to Fowler in the 6th but that would be all the action for the Cubs.  Jason Hamel would give up two singles in the bottom half but after two outs, Maddon would have seen enough and bring Travis Wood into the game to end the inning.  Bud Norris continues with another 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.  Wood would get into to enough trouble putting two men on but with two outs, Maddon  brings in Adam Warren who loads the bases but gets out of the inning.  Jim Johnson replaces Norris for yet another 1-2-3 inning on the Cubs.

Justin Grimm enters the bottom of the 8th loading the bases with two singles and a walk.  Clayton Richard enters the game gives up a single to Inciarte adding to the Braves lead.  Richard old strikeout d’Arnaud but gives up a sac fly to Freddie Freeman but Nick Markakis ends the inning with a ground out.  Cubs 1, Braves 5.  Former Cub, Aroydis Vizcaino comes to close the game and get a win for the Braves and he does so, getting Fowler to ground out and then striking out both Heyward and Bryant to end the game.  This was not the pretties of the Cubs losses this season but that’s why there’s 162 games plus Rizzo is out with some back issues.  The Cubs may have a rough trip East but I wouldn’t worry until after the All Star break.  Go Cubs Go!

Jake Arrieta’s 11th start of the season and he is looking for his 10h win of the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Scott Kazmir, who is looking for his 5th win of the season.  Jake would start the game off getting the first two batters in the first but would give up a line drive single to center field by Adrian Gonzalez.  That would be all the action after Joc Pederson strikes out to end the top half.  Dexter Fowler would lead off with a walk but he forced out at second on Jason Heyward’s ground ball to second base.  Bryant would strike out but with Anthony Rizzo at the plate, Heyward would steal second base. Then Rizzo would reach after being hit by the pitch.  Ben Zobrist would strike out to end the inning.  Jake would almost have a 1-2-3 second inning but Miguel Montero’s fielding error would allow Yasmini Grandal to reach first and then Montero’s throwing error would advance him to second base.  It would be Kazmir who would score the perfect inning.  In the top of the third, Jake would get the first two batters out but give up a single to Corey Seager but get Gonzalez o end the inning.  Fowler would get the only hit in the bottom half of the third but get picked off trying to snag second to make it a 1-2-3 inning.

Jake would get his first perfect inning in the top half of the fourth but not before Joel Maddon had to challenge the tag at first on Trace Thompson.  Scott would record the same in the bottom half.  Jake would lead off the fifth by walking Grandal who would be forced out on Carl Crawford’s ground ball to short stop but he would be forced out on Kazmir’s inning ending double play.  Kazmir would continue to silence the Cub’s bats with his third consecutive perfect inning.  Both men would only see three batters each in the sixth inning.

Jake would start the seventh inning off by getting the first two batters out but would walk the next three batters to load the bases for pitcher Scott Kazmir.  Dave Roberts would not hesitate to pinch hit for him with Justin Turner who would strike out to end the inning and bring us to the stretch.  The Cubs continuing the tradition of baseball would use the video board to show Vin Skully singing the seventh inning stretch, in honor of Harry Carrey, which was a pretty cool moment.  Sorry, I cannot give an other word for it.  They also congratulated him on 67 years in the business.  Joe Blanton would enter the game in the bottom half of the seventh and continue the silencing of the Cubs bats.

The top of the eighth would bring in Clayton Richard for the Cubs who would make the game interesting by giving up three straight singles to Chase Utley, Corey Seager and Gonzalez who drives in Utley for the first run of the ballgame prompting Maddon to go to the pen and bring in Adam Warren.  He would get Joc to fly out for the first out of the inning but walk Trace to load the bases.  With Howie Kendrick up to bat, Warren would bring it to a full count getting him to fly out to Heyward but it would be scored as a sacrifice fly as Seager would score run number two of the the evening.  Yasmani would pop out to shortstop Addison Russel to end the inning.  Blanton would continue what Kazmir started with his second consecutive perfect inning.  Dodgers 2-0.

Maddon would bring Warren back out for the top of the ninth and give up two singles Crawford and pinch hitting Enrique Hernandez.  Man now on first and third and Maddon goes back to the pen for Trevor Cahill.  He would get Utley to strike out but gives up a three run homer to Seager.  Cahill would get Gonzalez to ground out and Pederson to fly out to end the inning.  The Cubs only have one more shot to win this game with Tommy La Stella leading off agains Adam Liberatore.  Adam gets La Stella and Fowler to fly out and Heywrd would go down swinging to end the game, 5-0 Dodgers.

Jake would go seven innings striking out 8 walking 4 and only giving up 2 hits.  Richard and Warren wouldn’t be so lucky giving up four rounds on five hits but they didn’t give up a walk.  Two more games to go.  Let’s Go Cubs!
