In the series finale with the Brew Crew, Jake Arrieta takes to the mound searching for his 15th win of the season.  He is 1 – 0 against the Brewers seeing them last in April.  He takes on Zach Davies who faced the Cubs last on July 23 and took the W.

Today would see another great start at the plate for the Cubs but not so great for Davies as he only goes four innings.  In the first inning, he gives up a single to Kris Bryant, then a double to Anthony Rizzo.  Bryant scores on Ben Zobrist’s ground out to first.  Rizzo scores on Addison Russell’s single to center.  The third inning would start with Matt Szczur leading off with a single and then being brought home Byrant’s 29th home run of the season.  With two outs and two men on, Wilson Contreras doubles to right bringing in Zo for the fifth run of the day.  In the fourth, Szczur leads off with a double and scores on Bryants double.  Bryant then scores on Rizzo’s double.  The Cubs have earned 7 runs after four innings.

Jake would get through the first three innings with only one walk.  In the top of the fourth he would give up two, two out walks then gives up a three run homer to Kirk Nieuwenhuis, his 11th of the year.  He gets out of the fourth but  after four innings the Cubs are up 7 – 3.  Jake gives up two more walks in the fifth inning but retires the next three batters to get out of the inning.  He does however give up a leadoff home run to Hernan Perez in the top of the sixth and walks Chris Carter for the second time.  He gets the next two outs but then gives up back to back walks to Ramon Flores and Keon Broxton.  With the bases loaded, Maddon decides to bring in Spencer Patton who gives up an RBI base on balls to Jonathan Villar but gets out of the inning.

The bottom of the sixth, Craig Counsel decides to bring in Blaine Boyer who gets out of the inning but not before giving up a solo homerun to Kris Bryant for his second of the day and his 30th on the year.  The Cubs are now up, 8 – 5.  Spencer Patton remains in the game for the seventh and makes it a five pitch inning as does Carlos Torres in the bottom half of the inning.

Patton remains in for the top of the eighth and gives up a leadoff double to Kirk Nieuwenhuis who scores on Ramon Flores’s one out ground out.  Patton walks pinch hitter Manny Pina and that would be enough as Justin Grimm enters the game.  He gives up a single to Villar but gets Scooter Gennett to ground out to Rizzo to end the inning and we go to the bottom half of the eighth.  Corey Knebel joins the game and his first batter is Javier Baez who grabs a single to leadoff.  With one out, Matt Szczur walks to bring up Kris Bryant who has two homeruns today.  He sends a line drive to left field driving in Baez and going 5 for 5 today picking up his 78th RBI.  Rizzo and Zobrist fly out to end the inning.

We go to the top of the ninth with Aroldis Chapman taking to the mound for another save opportunity.  He strikes out Ryan Braun for the first out.  Hernan Perez next up and he singles.  Chapman gets Chris Carter to strike out for out number two.  Nieuwenhuis grounds out to end the game giving Chapman his 27th save of the year and the Cubs get their 13th sweep of the season!

The Cubs are coming off a late night defeating the Cardinals in 11 innings for 10 in a row.  Jake Arrieta takes to the mound today looking for win number 14 and the Cubs 11 win in a row.  This year Jake is 1-1 against the Cards and hopes to make it 2-1 against Adam Wainwright who is looking for his 10th win of the season as he is 1-0 against the Cubs.

Jake would go just 5 & 2/3 innings today giving up only 4 hits, one of them a home run to Stephen Piscotty in the 5th with one out.  Jake strikes out six batters today while only walking two batters.  Today he really has no need going passed the 6th inning with the run support he was provided.

Matt Szczur fills in for Fowler leading off the Cubs half of the 1st with his seventh double of the year.  Kris Bryant decides to second that with a double of his own driving in Matt.  Anthony Rizzo walks on five pitches.  With one out Addison Russell would also smack a double scoring Bryant.  Montero walks to load the bases but Wainwright gets out of the first with just 2 earned runs.  Adam starts the second inning off by striking out Jake but then hits Szczur.  Bryant decides to double again and again drives in Matt for another RBI.  Jorge Soler only hits a single but its enough to score Kris.  Russell gets into a full count reaching on a walk.  Wilson Contreras steps in the box and takes the first pitch to left field for his seventh home run of the year.  Montero ends the inning with a ground out but the Cubs are now up by 7.  That would be all for Wainwright just two innings.  Seth Manness takes the 3rd and Jonathon Broxton takes the 4th and 5th each only allowing one hit and holding the Cubs at 7.

The bottom of the sixth sees former Cubs, Jerome Williams join the game giving up a lead off home run to Szczur.  He does get the next two outs but gives up another solo home run, this time to Jorge Soler.  He does get out the 6th but doesn’t have any better luck in the 7th starting with a single to Wilson, he gets an out but then gives up a two run home run to Javier Baez.  Chris Coghlan joins as a pinch hitter for Jake’s replacement Justin Grimm, and reaches on a walk.  Matt Szczur then launches his second home run of the day scoring Wilson and the Cubs are up by 13.  Williams gets out of the 7th, settles down and makes it a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th.

Joe Smith takes the top of the 8th inning for the Cubs and grabs the first two outs on eight pitches but gives up a home run to Jedd Gyorko to give the Cards their second run of the game.  He gets out of the inning and it would be Travis Wood taking the 9th.  He quickly gets the first two outs but then walks Tommy Pham.  Jhonny Peralta makes a pinch hit appearance and singles on the first strike he sees.  Stephen Piscotty swings on the first pitch he sees and sends it to Kris Bryant who throws it to Javier Baez for the force and the Cubs win, with an 11 game win streak.

Both teams donned throwback jersey honoring Oakland’s 1981 days.  Jake Arrieta looks to get back into form and start August off with a winning record as he seeks win number 13.  Sonny Gray steps to the mound  trying to get a little closer to .500.

Both pitchers have a quick first inning.  The second is followed by a couple base runners but no runs.  It’s the top of third that starts with back to back single to Wilson Contreras and Dexter Fowler but Gray gets the next two outs.  Ben Zobrist at the plate and he sends a line drive to center driving in both Contreras and Fowler.  The Cubs grab two runs to help put Jake a little closer to that first win in over a month.  The bottom half goes by quick.

Gray bounces back in the fourth not allowing a base runner where Jake allows a walk.  The same for the fifth as Gray again doesn’t allow a runner but Jake gives up a single.  Manager Bob Melvin decides to bring in Liam Hendriks who starts the inning off by giving up a double to Anthony Rizzo.  He then scores on Addison Russell ground ball to third.  Russell scores on Jorge Soler’s double.  The Cubs grab runs three and four to put Arrieta that much closer to a W.

Jake for the first time since May 14 goes eight innings only allowing four base runners on three singles and a walk with four strike outs

The Cubs would see Patrick Schuster and John Axford.  In those three innings the Cubs reach on three walks but don’t add anymore runs to the board.  Cubs take two in Oakland and have one more before heading back home.

Game two of the Mariners versus the Cubs.  Jake the Great Arriet is still looking for his 13th win and first win this month.  He would be taking on Wade Miley who is also looking for his first win in July in what would turn to out to be a pitchers duel.

There would be only one batter to reach first base but it wouldn’t be on a hit.  In the 1st inning, Jake would strike out Leonys Martin but throws a wild pitch that allows him to reach.  Miley would strikeout the side in the bottom half of the 1st.

Jake would allow two singles and walk but does not allow a run to cross the plate.  In the bottom half of the inning Kris Bryant would reach on a fielding error but Miley would pick him off and both teams would remain scoreless.  Neither pitcher again would not allow a base runner in the 5th and 6th innings.

Jake continues to hold the M’s retiring his ninth batter in a row.  Miley would start the bottom half off by walking Dexter Fowler and would advance to second on Bryant’s single center.  Both runners would advance on Ben Zobrist’s sac bunt.  Javier Baez steps in the box and sends a ground ball to short, the throw is to home base and on the tag, he would be called out.  The Cubs would challenge the call and it out be overturned for the first run of the game.  Addison Russell strikes out for the second out of the game.  With Jason Heyward at the plate, Miley tries to pick off Baez and Bryant tries to take home.  Adam Lind would throw home and Bryant would score the second run of the game.  The Mariners would challenge the call and it would be overturned to end the inning and run would be pulled from the board.

Jake starts the 8th by walking the first two batters and that would be enough for Maddon as he brings in Rondon who gets the first two outs and Maddon would bring Chapman in for the last out.  Leonys Martin would send a fly ball to left center scori two runs putting the Mariners up by 1.  He would then steal third with Cano at the plate and then scores the third run on a wild pitch but Chapman gets Cano to go down swinging and a blown save to go along with that.  Edwin Diaz would replace Miley and gives up a single to Heyward but gets Contreras to line out.  He would walk Miguel Montero but strikes out Rizzo and Fowler to end the inning.

Travis Wood starts the 9th and immediately gives up a single to Nelson Cruz who is removed for pinch runner Franklin Guiterrez who makes it all the way to third base on two ground outs.  But then scores on Chris Innetta’s single to short that is thrown high for Russell’s first error in 28 games.  Travis would load the bases but gets out of the inning

Steve Cishek enters the the bottom of the 9th striking out Bryant for the first out of the game.  He gives up a sole to Zo but then strikes out Baez and Russell to end the game and gives the Mariners a W in this series.

Jake would go the entire month of July with out a win going 0-3.  However this would be the best start of the month for him despite the loss.

Jake Arrieta enters the season series against the White Sox looking for win lucky number 13.  He takes on Miguel Gonzalez who is looking for win three of the year.

Miguel would open up the game getting the first two batters to flyout but walks Anthony Rizzo.  Ben Zobrist ends the inning with a ground out.  Javier Baez would be the next base runner getting a single but an error by right fielder Adam Eaton would allow him to make it to second.  Baez try’s to score on Kris Bryant’s single to left field, but Melky Cabrera guns Baez down at home.  The 4th inning sees Zo walking and Wilson Contreras reaching on an error but no one would score.

Jake has been not so great lately but gets through the first two innings with just a walk to Melky Cabrera. He would get the first out in the 3rd inning but gives up a double to Tyker Saladino and scores the first run of the game on Adam Eaton’s single to right field.

Miguel Montero would leadoff the 5th with a single but no one scores.  With two outs in the 6th, Contreras singles and makes it to third on Jason Heyward’s double to right field.  Addison Russell steps into the box and gets called out on strikes.   Montero leads off with a double and reaches on Javier Baez’s line drive home run to left field.  Gonzalez gets the next two outs but Robin Ventura decides to bring in Zach Duke to close out the inning.

Jake makes it through the 4th and 5th only allowing Justin Morneau to reach on a single.  He gets the first out in the bottom of the 6th but walks Melky.  Jose Abreu reaches on a single.  However, Jake strikes out Morneau for the second out of the inning.  With two outs and one strike, Todd Frazier takes Jake deep to center field for a three run dinger.  He gets out of the inning by getting  J.B. Shuck to ground out.
Justin Grimm enters the 7th and makes it quick with a ground out and two K’s.  Grimm gets the first out but gives up a double to Melky and that would be enough for him as Carl Edwards, Jr enters the game walking Jose Abreu but gets Morneau to line out.  Carl strikes out Frazier to end the 8th.

Duke opens the 8th walking Zo and that brings in Matt Albers. Wilson grounds into a force out, as he’s forced out by Heyward. Russell walks but Montero strikes out to end the 8th.  Albers stays in for the save opportunity with lead off man Baez who doubles to right.  Fowler steps in the box, and Baez steals third.  Fowler would send a line drive th first that deflects off of Abreu allowing Baez to score.  With no outs, Kris Bryant sends one to Melky driving Fowler to third but gets gunned down at second for the first out for the top of the 9th.  Lefty Dan Jennings enters the game to take on Rizzo.  Rizzo drops one into left with just enough on it to score Fowler and reach first.  He stays at first as Zo flys out to right.  Wilson Contreras knock one righting the hole between first and second for a single.  Jason Heyward gets himself into a full count and strikes out to end the inning.

We go into a tie game in the bottom of the 9th and Mike Montgomery enters the game with the possible win on the line.  He gives up a single to Shuck who makes it third on Navarro’s sac bunt right on the first base line.  Tyler Saladino steps into the box and sends one right back at Mike that bounces off the mound and takes off for center scoring Shuck for the walk off win by the White Sox.

Jake Arreita seemingly has come back to earth but we’ll let the Southsiders have this one as they’ll be watching the Cubs from their couches in October!

The Cubs would open the game up giving Noah some trouble early on. He is able to hold them at bay.  The third inning would see Rizzo and Zobrist striking out.  With two outs, Wilson Contreras would smack a line drive double to right.  With Jason Heyward at the plate, Noah would throw a wild pitch, Contreras takes advantage taking third base but Rene Rivera’s throws it away allowing Wilson to snag home and the first run of the game.

Jake would help himself in the bottom of the fourth hitting a double to right.  Tommy La Stella would send a line drive t right fielder Michael Conforto, he sends it home but Jake is able to get under the tag scoring the second run of the game.  Terry Collins would challenge the call and it would be over turned in favor of the Mets and the third out of the inning.

Jake would hold the Mets to two singles and a walk through 5 innings.  The top of the 6th, Jose Reyes would send a line drive to right making it all the way to third base for his first triple of the year.  Curtis Granderson would fly out to Heyward but it would be enough for Reyes to score and tie the game at 1.

Jake would start off great striking out the first two batters and getting it out of the first 1-2-3 but the not so lucky in the 2cd giving up a lead off home run to David Freese.  Starling Marte would reach on a single and score on Sean Rodriguez’s eighth home run of the season.  Pirates 3-0.

Through 3 innings, the Cubs would have 5 base runners but it’s not until the 4th when Jason Heyward would smack his first triple of the year and scores on Javier Baez’s ground out.  It wouldn’t be until the 6th,when Heyward would reach again on a single.  He would score again but this time on Miguel Montero’s 5th home run of the season to tie the game at 3.  Anthony Rizzo would put the Cubs in the lead in the top of the 7th with his 21st dinger of the year.  Cubs 4-3.

We are just about half way through the season and Jake Arrieta is seeking lucky number 13 against Bartolo Colon as the Cubs are looking to split the series.  Jake would not start off the he would like walking rookie Brandon Nimmo.  Neil Walker would step in the box and launch his 15th home run of the season putting the Mets up by 2 after the 1st.  Yoenis Cespedes would double but Jake gets out of the inning.  Jake bounces back striking out the first batter in the second and retiring all 3 batters.

The Cubs would get the best of Colon in the top of the 4th, with a lead off single by Kris Bryant who makes it home to tie the game at 2 with Anthony Rizzo’s 20th home run of the season.

Jake would run into trouble again in the 4th, giving up a lead off single to to Asdrubal Cabrera then walks De Aza.  Two men on, one out for Travis d’Arnaud who sends a shallow pop up to kid center that gets passed Baez and drops in between all fielders to score Cabrera and De Aza.

He would get the first batter in the top of the 6th out but gives up back to back singles to Alejandro De Aza and Travis d’Arnaud.  That would be enough for Maddon as he brings Travis Wood in to finish the inning for Arrieta.

Erik Goeddel would enter the game in the 7th and gets the first 2 batters out but gives up a solo home run to Bem Zobrist to bring the Cubs with in 1.

After the 7th, both bullpens would stop each team from adding any more runs, even worse for the Cubs, no runs.  Jeurys Familia would grab his 28th save of the season, moving the Mets closer to sweeping the Cubs, just like last years post season.

The Cubs look to break the hole they dug themselves losing 6 out of 7 games.  The Great One, Jake Arrieta is seeking his 12th win of the season against the Reds Dan Strailey.  The Cubs wouldn’t let the former Cubs get past the 4th inning.  Kris Bryant would start the scoring in the top of the 1st with his 18th double bringing in Jadon Heyward and he’d score on Miguel Mobtero’s sac fly.  The Reds would strike back and tie it up in the bottom of the first with Adam Duvall’s 17th double to left scoring Billy Hamilton and Joey Votto.

In Kris Bryant’s second at bat in the top of third, he’d send a fly ball to left center for his 19th home run of the year.  Just like chess, in a counter move Jay Bruce would send Zack Cozart across home on a ground ball single to center, tieing the game at 3.

After Chris Coghlan and Arrieta start the first with singles on one out, Heyward drives in Chris on a line drive to center.  Bryant would jack his 20th homer of the season to left driving in Arrieta and Heyward.  After just 3 & 2/3 innings, Strailey would be pulled to make it a bullpen day for the Reds.  Jumbo Diaz would get out of the inning after giving up a single to Russel.  Jake would allow to baserunners in the bottom half but does not allow any runs.  Cubs 7-3.

With Michael Lorenzen on the mound and two outs, Arrieta cracks his 2nd home run of the season adding to his lead but would cut his lead to 3 in the bottom half by walking Billy Hamilton then giving up a home run to Jay Bruce.  He does get out of the inning.  Cubs 8-5.

Bryant would continue his in game hitting streak with a double to lead off the 6th but wouldn’t cross the plate.  Trevor Cahill enters the bottom of the 6th walking Jose Peraza who then scores on Tucker Barnhart’s double to right.  He would get two outs but after a single to Billy Hanilton, Joel Maddon would bring in Travis Wood.

Russ Olendorf enters the 7th getting the first 1-2-3 inning of the game.  Wood gets the first out in the bottom half but gives up a double to Duvall who makes it to third after Pedro Strop comes in getting the second out of the inning.  Duvall does score from 3rd on Pedro’s wild pitch.

Olendorf seems to be calming the Cubs down by retiring his 5th batter in a row but with two outs gives up back to back dingers to Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo but does get out of the inning.  Strop makes it a 1-2-3 bottom of the 8th after a bunch of defensive changes by Maddon.

Albert Almora, Jr entered the game in the bottom of 8th leading off the 9th with a single against Blake Wood.  Russel would cause Jose Peraza to commit an error to reach 1st.  Javier Baez would send a line drive to center scoring Almora but trying to stretch it to two gets caught at 2cd base.  Wood gets out of the inning.  Cubs 11-7.

Joel Peralta enters the game for the Cubs to shut down the Reds and gets Billy Hamilton to strikeout but gives up a solo homer to Joey Votto.  He gets the next out but Maddon brings in Hector Rondon to get Duvall to pop out to end the game.

While the Cubs did win, not the best outing for the Great One and the bullpen.  Jake goes only 5 innings giving up 5 runs on 4 hits striking out 4.  The bullpen gave up 3 runs on 4 hits.  It may have been a different outcome if not for Kris Bryant’s 5 for 5 with 3 home runs driving in 6 RBI’s.   Either way, Cubs win!

Jake would only go 6 innings striking 11, walking 3 and only gave up 2 hits.  The bullpen combined would strike out 2, walk 1 and give up only one hit.  Great day for the Cubs!
