I hope you’re ready for the NFL draft because it kicks off tomorrow with Round 1.
Now there are a lot of ways to watch the draft if you aren’t in Nashville to see it live. ABC along with ESPN and ESPN Deportes will be covering all three days for Disney while the NFL Network as you’d expect will also cover all three days of the NFL draft.
The Arizona cardinals have the first pick in the draft and even though they selected what they thought was their franchise quarterback last season it appears that with the coaching change they made in the off season they’ll also bring in a new franchise quarterback as it appears as though Arizona will select Kyler Murray with the first pick. There where some rumors earlier this week that the Cardinals where considering going with another player at #1, but I’m sure that was just smoke screen to try and draw some interest in Josh Rosen; who was the quarterback they took in the first round last year.
There are a couple of teams out their where Rosen would be a nice fit, but I don’t think that they’re willing to give the Cardinals what they’d want in a trade for him. Rosen was the 10th pick in last years draft; so you’d have to think that Arizona would like to get a late 1st or early 2nd round pick in return for him, but I’m not sure that’s going to happen.
Rosen played in 14 games last season and started 13 of those games. He completed 55.2% of his passes while throwing for 2278 yards with 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Arizona went 3-10 in the games Rosen started. Rosen also rushed for 123 yards, but was sacked 45 times. Rosen also fumbled the football 10 times losing 7 of those fumbles. Now Rosen’s numbers weren’t great, but remember the Cardinals are picking first because they had the worst record in the NFL; so he wasn’t playing for a very good team.
Including Murray most experts expect three to four quarterbacks to be selected in Round 1 of the NFL draft. Is it possible that one of those teams that is expected or interested in drafting a quarterback would make a trade for Rosen?
The New York Giants have two 1st round picks #6 and #17 and everyone expects them to select the quarterback they see as the successor to Eli Manning. Is it possible the Giants would trade a later round pick for Rosen and let him sit behind Manning for a year before taking over as the starter?
The Washington Redskins are sitting with the 15th pick in the 1st round and with the terrible injury to Alex Smith last season that could be career ending the Redskins look like they might take a quarterback in Round 1. Maybe the Redskins are the team that deals for Rosen.
The Denver Broncos could be a bit of a wild card in all this. Denver has the 10th pick in the 1st round and there are some mock drafts that have them taking a quarterback with that pick. Now Denver did bring Joe Flacco in to be the starter, but they’d like a young guy behind him. Could that young guy be Rosen?
There has also been some speculation that with a new head coach the Cincinnati Bengals will draft a quarterback. The Bengals have the 11th pick; so there will be somewhere there when they pick, but it might make more sense for then to fill another need with that pick and see if they could acquire Rosen for a 2nd or maybe even a 3rd round pick.
All signs point to the Miami Dolphins needing a young quarterback to develop, but it seems as though they’re fine with going though this season with veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starter and finding that young quarterback in the 2020 draft.
Ben Rothlisberger is 37 years old and entering his 16th season. Not so much last season, but the couple of seasons before last Rothlisberger had talked about retirement; so maybe that crops up again. Even though there are reports that the Pittsburgh Steelers and Rothlisberger are trying to work out a contract extension he is only officially signed though the 2019 season.
Pittsburgh has the 20th pick in the 1st round and depending on how long they think Rothlisberger is going to play; could they draft a quarterback? Or are they a possible trading partner with Arizona for Rosen?
I even heard some talk that the New England Patriots might be interested in dealing for Rosen. Now Tom Brady is planning on playing until he’s 45 years old; so Rosen would have to sit behind him for a while, but could New England make this deal?
I fully expect the Patriots to trade their 1st round pick which is the final pick in the 1st round #32, but I don’t think it will be for Rosen. My guess is they’ll more down and acquire more draft picks like they’ve doe so many times in the draft.
Where do you see Josh Rosen ended up? and what do you think the Cardinals get for him?
Prior to tomorrow’s draft the Seattle Seahawks added some draft picks by trading their top pass rusher from last season Frank Clark for the Kansas City Chiefs.
In return for Clark the Seahawks will receive the Chiefs 2019 1st round draft pick which is 29th overall. The teams will also swap 3rd round picks in this draft and the Seahawks will also receive the lower of Kansas City’s 2nd round picks in the 2020 draft.
The Seahawks had placed the franchised tag on Clark, but he had yet to sign the $17.128 million dollar tag. With being traded to the Chiefs Clark also agreed to a five year $105.5 million dollar deal with 63.5 million dollars in guaranteed money.
In four season with Seattle Clark had 35 sacks with the 13 sacks he posted last season being a career high. Clark also made 33 solo tackles assisted on 8 other tackles had 10 tackles for loss and 27 quarterback hits last season. Clark recovered 2 fumbles last season while forcing 3 fumbles and he also snagged his first career interception last season.
Clark should help the Chiefs replace Justin Houston who was released by Kansas City in March and is now a member of the Indianapolis Colts.
