Let’s call it Wednesday

I’ve been a sports fan for a long time and I’ve seen great players come and go. What I’m trying to remember is if I’ve ever heard a great player complain as much as LeBron James does. It started with there not being enough time off for the All-Star break. The NBA gave in and made the All-Star break a week long. I think that with this extra time James took a trip to Miami instead of spending that extra time with his family which is what he said when he cried about the break being extended. James also complained about back to back games and playing three games in four days. Now under the new CBA these issues have been address. So expect an even longer NBA season starting next year when the new CBA kicks in. Then earlier this season James  started kicking and screaming that the Cleveland Cavaliers needed a shooter. So Cavaliers general manager David Griffin managed to swing a deal with the Atlanta Hawks for one of the best shooters in the NBA Kyle Korver. When things didn’t turn around right away after they acquired Korver the excuse James gave was that they hadn’t had any practice time together. The Cavaliers have now lost five of there last seven games and you knew that James would have an excuse or at least something to cry about and he didn’t disappoint. James has squarely placed the blame on Griffin and has now said that the Cavaliers need a play maker. James called the current Cavaliers roster “ill-equipped” and then later tried to back pedal on Twitter saying “I not mad or upset at management cause Griff and staff have done a great job, I just feel we still need to improve in order to repeat…if that’s what we wanna want to do”. James posted this in two separate tweets and the spelling is all his; so don’t blame that one on me. James is looking for the Cavaliers to add a back up point guard to lighten the load on himself and Kyrie Irving. The Cavaliers do have other point guards on there roster. Cleveland has Kay Felder there 2nd round pick from 2016 as well as DeAndre Liggins who is in his 4th NBA season. Now you have to ask yourself if it’s the general managers fault that James had the Cavaliers over pay his friends and now there in a tight salary cap spot even with the increase the NBA just had. It’s clear that James doesn’t want to see Felder or Liggins on the court; so they’re as good as done with the Cavaliers. Now the Cavaliers are still on top of the Eastern Conference at 30-13, but there lead is down to just three games over the Toronto Raptors. The more you listen to James talk you actually have to wonder if this is just a guy trying to cover his rear end in case the Cavaliers don’t make it to the NBA finals.

So where are the Cavaliers going to get a back up point guard. I’m sure James would love to see Cleveland go out and get his buddy Chris Paul. Paul is currently out after having thumb surgery, but I don’t think that Cleveland could get Paul’s salary under the cap unless Irving is headed the other way in the deal and that doesn’t solve the Cavaliers problem. James’ other buddy Dwayne Wade isn’t a true point guard, but I’m sure the Chicago Bulls would part with Wade’s teammate and true point guard Rajon Rondo. Rickey Rubio of the Minnesota Timberwolves name has come up in trade rumors; so maybe he could be an option for Cleveland. There could also be a players like Goran Dragic of the Miami Heat or Tim Frazier of the New Orleans Pelicans available. The question is which one if any of these players James would accept as a teammate. Then of course the Cavaliers would have to make sure they could make a deal with the salary cap. Of course with what the Cavaliers are paying in luxury tax penalties now; would a little more even matter?

The Washington Wizards arrived dressed in black funeral wear for what they openly labeled a grudge match against the Boston Celtics Tuesday night. Bradley Beal scored 13 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter to help  the Wizards extended their home winning streak to 14 games with a 123-108 victory over Boston. John Wall had 27 points while Markieff Morris register a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. This was a bit of revenge for the Wizards from the Last time these two teams met which ended with a Boston 117-108 victory. That game featured five technical fouls and ended with Wall and Jae Crowder getting into a verbal confrontation that almost started a brawl. That prompted the Wizards to show up to Verizon Center on Tuesday wearing all black, funeral themed clothing. Wall’s apparel consisted of a designer T-shirt beneath a varsity style jacket as he arrived. Beal who came up with the idea showed up wearing an oversized black winter trenchcoat complete with hood and matching scarf. He would later have his best offensive night since that game in Boston. There was no blow up between the teams this game, but there was some action on the Boston bench as Marcus Smart got into an argument with Boston’s assistant coaches in the 4th quarter. Celtics coach Brad Stevens explained that the argument came from Smart wanting to go back into the game, but was on an minute limit for the half.

The rivalry in more interesting between these two teams since they’re both have good seasons. Boston is currently 3rd in the Eastern Conference standings at 26-18 while the Wizards are currently 5th in the Eastern Conference standings at 25-20. Maybe there will end up being a playoff series between these two teams.

Believe it or not we’re getting close to the start of baseball spring training. Pitchers and catchers report starting February 13th with all players being in camp by February 20th. So ready or not it’s almost time for baseball.

John Wall hit a jumper with :05.9 seconds left to lift the Washington Wizards to a 101-99 victory over the short handed Chicago Bulls. The Bulls went into the game without there top two scorers and one of their top bench players. Jimmy Butler and Nikola Mirotic both missed the game because of an illness and Dwayne Wade sat out because this was the second game of a back to back. The win was the Wizards 3rd in a row and got them over the .500 mark at 19-18. The loss drops the Bulls a game under .500 at 19-20.

The Bulls took a 10 point lead 36-26 after one quarter.

The Bulls scored the first eight points of the 2nd quarter and where out to a 18 point lead at 44-26. The best the Wizards could do in the quarter was cut the Bulls lead to 10 points; which they did twice. Bobby Portis had 13 points off the bench while Rajon Rondo came off the Bulls bench for his first game action for the first time since December 30th and scored 12 points. Taj Gibson had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Rondo and Jerian Grant tied for the team lead in assists with 6.

This game was the first of a back to back for the Wizards as they have to travel to Boston to put there three game winning streak on the line against the 25-15 Celtics. This was the Bulls second loss in a row. Chicago will get a day off before they play there third game in four days as the stay on the road to play the 17-21 New York Knicks on Thursday night.

Wednesday nights 107-97 loss by the Chicago Bulls to the Washington Wizards was the Bulls 4th loss in there last 5 games. Also in the Bulls last 3 losses they’ve been beaten by double figures. With the win Washington improves there record to 13-15 while the Bulls fall back to the .500 mark at 14-14.

The teams where pretty even though the first part of the opening quarter. Washington found itself with a one point lead at 13-12, but the Bulls went on a 21 to 9 run the final 6 minutes of the quarter and built an 11 point lead 33-22 by the end of the 1st.

The Bulls where able to keep the lead in double digits and after a Dwayne Wade three point play the Bulls had the largest lead of 13 points at 43-30. The Wizards went on a 10 to 1 run and cut the lead to 4 points at 44-40. Washington came all the way back to take the lead at 53-52, but the Bulls where able to take the lead back going into halftime at 56-55.

Washington was able to tie the game again at 61 all and the Wizards then went on to build a 5 point lead at 71-66 before the Bulls came back. The teams found themselves tied again at 75 all and each team was able to add two more points before the quarter ended with the teams tied again at 77 all.

The teams tie 4 times to start the 4th quarter, but Washington scored 6 straight points to take a 91-85 lead. Chicago never got closer than 3 points again as the Wizards where able to continue to build there lead. It reached double digits for the first time with 1:05 left to play. The Bulls knocked the lead down a few points before Washington got it back to 10 points by the end of the game for a 107-97 win.

John Wall led the Wizards and was the games high scorer with 23 points. Wall also handed out a team high 9 assists. Bradley Beal added 21 points while Marcin Gortat had 14 points. The Chicago Bulls got there second win in a row and improved to 6-4 on the season while handing the Washington Wizards there second straight loss and dropping there record to 2-7 Saturday night. The Wizards playing without there starting back court as John Wall and Bradley Beal didn’t play in the game. Wall is being held out of the second of back to back games to rest his knees. Wall had off season surgery on both knees. Beal has a sore right hamstring and is considered day to day. Obviously missing your starting back court is going to hurt and this helped the Bulls to a 106-95 victory.

The Wizards got out to a 12-point lead at 21-9 after an Otto Porter Jr. lay up with 4:28 left in the 1st quarter. The Bulls then went on a 19 to 6 run to end the quarter and take a 1-point lead at 28-27.

The Wizards bounced back in the 2nd quarter and after Markieff Morris hit a jumper the Wizards had a 7-point lead at 39-32. Two Jimmy Butler free throws with just about 5 minutes to go in the quarter gave the Bulls the lead at 44-43. The Wizards came back to build a 9-point lead at 55-46 with a 1:19 left in the quarter. The Bulls where able to cut into that lead and went into halftime down 3 at 56-53.

The 3rd quarter belonged to the Bulls as they held the Wizards to just 14 points in the quarter. Maybe it was the fact that Washington was playing short handed or maybe it was the Bulls defense, but either way the Bulls double the Wizards points total and taking a 11-point lead after three quarters at 81-70.

The start of the 4th quarter saw the Bulls get out to a 15-point lead 85-70 before the Wizards scored there first points. The closest Washington could get in the quarter was 87-80. The teams played an even 4th quarter as each team scored 25 points. leading the game to the final score of 106-95.

Jimmy Butler was the high scorer in the game with 37 points. Butler also tied for the game high in assists with 9 and just missed a triple-double as he also had 8 rebounds. Butler was also a perfect 14 for 14 from the free throw line. Dwayne Wade had a rough night shooting going 5 for 17, but still had 14 points. Taj Gibson scored 13 points, Robin Lopez had a double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds while Nikola Mirotic came off the Bulls bench to add 17 points.

Washington was led by Markieff Morris who had 24 points and a game high 15 rebounds. Marcin Gortat put up a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Sheldon McClellan filled one of the back court spots and scored 15 points while Tomas Satoransky was the other back court starter and he scored 12 points and tied Butler for the game high in assists with 9.

The 6-4 Bulls start a 6-game road trip in Portland as they take on the 6-4 Trail Blazers Tuesday night. The 2-7 Wizards head to Philadelphia to take on the 1-8 76ers Wednesday night.

Are the Atlanta hawks the best team in the Eastern conference of the NBA? With a 34-8 record and on a 13 game winning streak you could make that argument. Under 2nd year head coach Mike Budenholzer the Hawks are playing more of an uptempo style and have been compared to the team that Budenholzer worked for 16 or 17 seasons the San Antonio Spurs. Yesterday on the Sports Time Radio podcast Brad Rowland from talked about the fact that the hawks are just one win away from tying the team’s all-time record for wins in a row. They’ll get their chance to tie that record tonight (Wednesday) as they host the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers are in last place in the Central division of the Eastern conference at 15-28 coming into tonight’s game. This could be considered a classic trap game for the Hawks as they have a big match up with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday and if they’re looking ahead to that game the Pacers may surprise them. If the Hawks can get their 14th win tonight and they find a way to get past the Thunder for #15 they’ll have a couple of winnable games Sunday against the Minnesota Timberwolves and then a week from today against the Brooklyn Nets. Could the Atlanta winning streak be at 17 when they go up against the 2nd best team record wise in the Western conference the Portland Trailblazers. Now if you don’t consider Atlanta to be the best team in the Eastern conference; you’d have to say they’re the biggest surprise right now. Stat wise you wouldn’t know how well this team is doing. They don’t have a player who averages 20 points a game. Jeff Teague is averaging the most points per game with 17.2. Paul Milsap isn’t far behind at 16.9 points per game. Milsap is the teams rebounding leader with 7.9 per game. Al Horford is 2nd in rebounding at 6,6 per game. Teague is easily the team leader in assists handing out 7.3 per game. You can’t talk about the success the Hawks are having without mentioning the role that Kyle Korver has played. Korver is shooting 53.6% from behind the three point line and adding 13.2 points per game, 4.2 rebounds per game and 2.9 assists per game. The Hawks have avoided a major injury to a star player this season and still may have some issues inside against bigger teams, but their isn’t a team in the NBA on a better roll right now.

The team in the Eastern conference that might give the Hawks the most problems could be the Washington Wizards. While the Chicago Bulls are struggling right now and the Cleveland Cavaliers are still trying to find their way the Wizards have the 2nd best record in the Eastern conference at 29-13. The Wizards have what the Hawks struggle against; bigger player who can move. The Wizards have Marcin Gortat, Nene as starters with Kris Humphries and Kevin Seraphin coming off the bench. While I think everyone is expecting the Cavaliers or the Bulls to represent the Eastern conference in the NBA finals, but don’t be surprise if you see the Wizards vs. the Hawks for the right to play for the NBA title.

7 years and $210 million is what it took the Washington Nationals to land Max Scherzer. Scherzer turns 31 in July; so that means the back-end of this contract will be terrible for Washington. There was a lot of money deferred; so does that make Schrezer the new Bobby Bonilla? While the contract says seven years he’ll be paid over a period of fourteen years. Schrezer was 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA last season for the Detroit Tigers. The knock on Schrezer is the fact that he’s had one complete game in 198 career starts, but that complete game was last season. Schrezer is also one year removed from a Cy Young award-winning season. Schrezer joins the nationals starting rotation along with Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, Gio Gonzalez and Doug Fister. They also have Tanner Roark, but you’d think if the Nationals don’t make another deal Roark may be ticketed for the bullpen. There is talk of the Nationals looking for a bullpen arm, but would they deal Zimmerman to get him or would Roark be the starter that gets dealt. Either way with the Schrezer signing the Nationals have on paper what appears to be the best starting rotation in Major League Baseball but will it win them a World Series.

I was a little surprised to see the Milwaukee Brewers trade Yovani Gallardo. He had been the ace of their pitching staff and even though his stats where in decline I didn’t think they would trade him. In return for Gallardo Milwaukee received a group of young players. Infielder Luis Sardinas and right-handed pitchers Corey Knebel and Marcos Diplan. There was some talk that the Brewers would be interested in Jordan Zimmerman of the Nationals, but it doesn’t appear that will happen; so it looks like Jimmy Nelson is the guy tab to move into the Milwaukee starting rotation. We’ll have Phil Watson from on the podcast today (Wednesday) and you know this topic will come up.

The Houston Astros and the Chicago Cubs made a deal as the Astros have traded outfielder Dexter Fowler to Chicago for infielder Luis Valbuena and right-handed pitcher Dan Straily. The Cubs had reportedly been seeking an outfielder, and Fowler will take over in center and join an outfield mix that also includes Jorge Soler, Chris Coghlan, Chris Denorfia and Arismendy Alcantara. Alcantara is just 23 and struggled in his first big league season in 2014, so perhaps the Cubs will have him start the season in the minors, or maybe they’ll also have him play infield, perhaps using him at third base until Kris Bryant arrives. Mike Olt and Tommy La Stella could also be in the short-term mix at third. If you’ve ever heard the podcast you know I’m all in on Kris Bryant and thought he should’ve been with the major league team at the end of last season. Sadly the Cubs are looking for control of Bryant for as long as they can; so I won’t be surprised at all if the Cubs keep Bryant in the minors until July just for that one extra year of control. Where Bryant starts the season at will tell you exactly where the Cubs think they are. If he’s in Chicago with the big club the Cubs think they have a shot at a playoff berth. If Bryant starts the season at Triple A Iowa the Cubs feel they won’t be a playoff team and hold Bryant back.
