Jason Hammel looks for one of his biggest outings against the also hot streaking Pittsburgh Pirates and thier #2 Gerrit Cole.  Now I have to be honest, today on The Podcast I not only went against the Cubs but I questioned thier ability to perform against a playoff contending team like the Pirates, who’ve also been tearing up their opennents.  They must have had us on in the clubhouse and dugout (I wish) because they shut me up.  As I predicted though, Dexter Fowler would lead off the game with a single, at least I was spot on with that but Cole would get out of the inning.  Hammel would get leadoff man John Jaso to ground out but would give up a solo home run to Andrew McCutchen.  Both pitchers would have relatively easy 2cd innings.

Fowler would leadoff the third with a walk.  With two men out Rizzo would step into the box and send a fly ball to right scoring Dexter!  Zobrist would send a line drive single to right scoring Rizzo. Russell would end the inning swinging but the Cubs would go up 2-1.  The every other inning theory says they both had again relatively easy fourth innings.

With the leadoff man out, Kris Bryant would walk and reach third on Rizzo’s second double of the game.  Zobrist would get his second RBI of the game with a sac fly to center.  Cole would hit Russell and then walked Matt Szczur prompting a pitching change, with A.J. Schugel.  David Ross would send a soft line drive to right, scoring both Rizzo and Russell.  Hammel would strikeout ending the inning but the Cubs would be up 6-1.

Jason Hammel would give up a leadoff single to Jody Mercer and then a walk to Jason Rogers  but would get the next three batters out including McCutchen but not before Jody Mercer would score.  Kyle Lobstein would come in for the Pirates giving up a lead off double to Fowler but would get out of the inning with out any damage.  Hammel would start off the sixth by hitting Starling Marte which would bring a coaching visit to the mound.  With Adam Warren pitching, Marte would get caught stealing but he would get out of the inning with out a run.

Lobstein would hit Zobrist to start the inning off but would get Addison to pop out.  Baez would single pushing Zobrist. Soler would pinch hit for Adam Warren and on a wild pitch Zobrist would score but Soler would pop out.  Cubs up 7-2.

Justin Grimm would come into the game and get out of the 7th by only giving up one hit.  With Lobstein still in the game, he would get out of the eighth by only giving up a double to Bryant.  Pedro Strop would replace Grimm by striking out Matt Joyce.  Marte would single to center but that would be all she wrote with Francisco Cervelli grounding into a double play.  Arquimedes Caminero would replace Lobstein and with two outs would give up a single to Baez and walk Ross.  Clayton Richard would come into the game pinch hitting for Strop but would ground out to end the inning.

Travis Wood comes into close out the game and starts it off by striking out Gregory Polanco. With two outs he’d walk Jody Mercer but would strike out Jason Rogers to end the game.   Cubs pitching would prove to be a huge strength tonight especially the bullpen combined only giving up 2 hits and striking out 6 batters with only two walks.  Hammel is now 4-0 with 5 games started and only 29 innings.  Until tomorrow!

Game four versus the Reds, Jason Hammel looking for his third win of the season against Alfredo Simon who is 0-1.  His last start was against the Cubs on April 13th, where he’d give up five earned runs and not make it through the first ininning.  I’d love to tease or lead you to believe that this start would be any different, it kind of was, he’d at least make it passed the first inning but not before giving up three runs.  Tommy La Stella would lead off with a double to center and score the first run on a single by Jason Heyward.  Heyward would steal second base with Anthony Rizzo at the plate.  He would send his a fly ball to right center, that would go under review for fan interfernce but would be upheld as his seventh home run of the season.  Soler & Montero would close out the inning with strike outs.  Hammel would come up in the second and reach on a ground ball to second.  La Stella would double and both men would score on a Jason Heyward line drive to  right field but he would end the inning getting caught stealing second.

Kris Bryant would lead off the third inning with a walk.  He would score on Anthony Rizzo’s second home run of the day and eighth of the season.  Jorge Soler would single and be pushed to second on a fielding error by Alfredo Simon.  Addison Russell would send a ground ball to center scoring Soler.  Drew Hayes would replace Simon retiring La Stella but the Cubs would be up now 8-0.  We move to the top of the sixth Hayes would meet La Stella again but this time Tommy would get his first home run of the season putting the Cubs up 9-0.

Jason Hammel would make it through six full innings only walking two batters and giving up three hits and striking out seven batters.  Adam Warren, Travis Wood and Hector Rondon would pitch the last three innings without giving up a walk or a hit.  Combined they would strike out five batters to give Jason Hammel his third win of the season.  All four pitchers would combine for a three hit shutout!

Excellent road trip for the Cubs, they are off Monday and start a six game home stand against the Brewers and the Braves.  Until Tuesday, #GoCubsGo

Jason Hammel gets his second start of the season hoping to improve to 1 – 1. His last start in AZ was a solid outing where the Cubs bats were silenced for the evening post Schwarber’s season ending injury.  With the fastest guy in the league Billy Hamilton, leading off with a base on balls. He gets an out with Eugenio Suarez and with Joey Votto batting Hammel throws to first to pick off Hamilton!  He would give up a single to Votto but would get out of the inning.  In the second he’d give a double to Jordan Pacheco but would get out of the inning. Hammel would get support in the bottom of the second Rizzo would fly out but Kris Bryant would launch his second homer to left center off Raisel Iglesias.  He was able to keep the Cubs at bay until the bottom of the fifth when Russell would reach on a line drive to center.  Hammel would help himself with a double scoring Russell, he would score on a sac fly by Ben Zobrist.  Blake Wood came into the sixth giving up two hits.

Hammel would come out after six, with 4 walks, 4 hits and 3 strikeouts.  Travis Wood would cruise through the seventh and would come out in the eighth for Pedro Strop who would get s 1-2-3 inning also.

J.J. Hoover would start the bottom of the eighth walking three, giving up three with four earned runs managing only one out.  Montero, Russell and Szczur would rack up an RBI each.  Fowler would get two on a grounder to right.   Jumbo Diaz would come in to get the last two outs.

Justin Grimm would come into the ninth and make it exciting.  He would give up a single to Jay Bruce. Adam Duvall would double.  With one out Tucker Barnhart would ground out to short scoring Jay Bruce.  With two outs, Scott Schleber would pinch hit for Jumbo but would watch strike three as the Cubs win thier fifth straight game putting them up in the standings at a league leading 8-1!

Combined the team is showing patience at the plate only striking out 4 times.  The bullpen would hold the lead together giving Jason Hamel his first victory of the season and dropping his ERA to .75.  After 3 hours and 7 minutes, 34,898 fans were singing “Go Cubs Go!”

The baseball trading deadline is at the end of the month, but the Oakland A’s and the Chicago Cubs got things started on July 5th. The Cubs traded two starting pitchers; Jason Hammel and Jeff Samardzija to the A’s and received shortstop Addison Russell, Billy McKinney, Dan Straily and a player to be named later or cash considerations. Living in the Chicago area this has been talked about quite a bit. I’ve heard a lot of baseball people say the Cubs got a great deal, but did they? Hammel and Samardzija are top of the rotation pitchers while the Cubs have potential. Straily started the season in the Oakland rotation and was so bad he was optioned to Triple A. McKinney is in Class A ball; that’s a long way away from being in the major league. The best player baseball people say the Cubs got in the deal was shortstop Russell; who was in Double A at the time of the trade and injured. For this trade to come out good on the Cubs end doesn’t Russell have to be a break out major league player? Shouldn’t McKinney at least get the majors and be a solid player. Shouldn’t Straily be a 4th or 5th starter for the Cubs. There are so many if’s involved in this deal for the Cubs I’m not sure you can say it’s good on there end to start with. Now it may work out to be a great deal for the Cubs, but can you call it that way right now or should you wait to call it a great deal. Remember you don’t always get John Smoltz for Doyle Alexander or Mark McGwire for T. J. Matthews, Blake Stein and Eric Ludwick. I gave Cubs fans a break there and they all know what I’m talking about. Or course having Hammel and Samardzija wasn’t going to get the Cubs into the playoffs any time soon; so they might as well move them for prospects who might be major league ready when and or if the Cubs ever improve. Does this trade have to get the A’s into the World Series for it to be a good deal for them? The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim also made a trade on July 5th. The Angels got left-handed pitcher Joe Thatcher and outfielder Tony Campana from the Arizona Diamondbacks for outfielder Zach Borenstein and minor league pitcher Joey Krehbiel. I’m not quite sure if this move by the Angels is equal to the move that the A’s made, but it should make the American League West fun to watch. The Diamondbacks made another trade the next day sending starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy to the New York Yankees for pitcher Vidal Nuno. You have to believe the Yankees where looking for a veteran starting pitcher since it looks more and more like C.C. Sabathia will be lost for the season. The Yankees still have a shot at being a playoff team and they’ll need a veteran starter like McCarthy in their rotation. As the deadline gets closer their will be more and more trades made as team try to get ready for a playoff run.

If you listen to the show you know I’ve been very tough lately on Chris Bosh. Bosh was offered a 4 year $88 million dollar deal by the Houston Rockets and hasn’t taken it yet because he apparently is waiting to see what LeBron James does. If you don’t remember Bosh used to be a Top 10 or maybe even a Top 5 player in the NBA now he’s an after thought in Miami. Bosh’s last year in Toronto he averaged 24.0 points per game. He’s never averaged over 20.0 points per game with Miami. I think Bosh needs to get out of the shadows of James and Dwayne Wade. While Wade isn’t the player he used to be he’ll always be the face of the Miami Heat. Wade was their draft pick and won a title before James and Bosh got their. I’m telling Bosh to go to Houston take that deal and try to win a title with James Harden and Dwight Howard. If Bosh passes up the Rockets deal and signs a veteran exception or whatever the NBA calls it then he’s a coward and he has no confidence in his own ability. It would be sad for Bosh if I thought he had more talent than he thinks he does.
