Let’s call it Wednesday

With the NBA regular season winding there are still some stories that have to play out before the playoffs get started.

Right now the Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers are all 1 1/2 games out of the top spot in the Eastern conference. The Heat are currently holding the #1 seed in the conference. Miami has struggled as of late as they are 1-4 in their last five games and with a game against Milwaukee tonight Miami could slip out of that #1 seed.

Boston has been the biggest mover in the standings since the All-Star break, but they just suffered a big loss when Robert Williams torn his meniscus ligament and will need surgery. Williams will be out four to six weeks and if the Celtics can get through the 1st round of the playoffs without him Williams could return in the 2nd round.

The 76ers have dropped their last two games and even Joel Embiid has cooled off a little down the stretch, but the important thing for Philadelphia isn’t getting that #1 seed, it’s making sure that Embiid and James Harden are both 100% when the playoffs start. Harden has taken a game off here and there to rest his hamstring, but he should be full go by the time the playoffs come around.

Of course, the Bucks are the defending NBA champions, and they appear to be picking up their game at the right time of the season. Milwaukee got a 118-116 win over Philadelphia to move to just a 1/2 game of that #1 seed. Milwaukee has won three of their last four games as they get ready to face the Brooklyn Nets tomorrow night.

As for the Nets they are in the 8th spot in the Eastern conference right now and they are 3 1/2 games out of the 6th spot which would get the out of the play-in tournament, but that’s a big hill to find with so few games left in the regular season.

The team right in front of the Nets are the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavaliers are just one game out of the 6th spot, so they have a chance to get themselves out of the play-in tournament. Evan Mobley will miss the Cavaliers game tonight against the Dallas Mavericks and there still is no timetable for Jarrett Allen to return from his finger injury. Mobley is only expected to miss tonight’s game and should return t for tomorrow night’s match up against the Atlanta Hawks who are holding down the 10th and final spot in the play-in tournament.

Right now it looks like the Nets, Hawks and Charlotte Hornets will be in the play-in tournament. Now will just have to which team ends up in that 7th spot and joins them.

Now over in the Western conference it looks like the only thing left to decide is which teams will fill the final two spots in the play-in tournament.

As of right now the New Orleans Pelicans and the San Antonio Spurs are sitting in the 9th and 10th spots in the Western conference.

The Spurs are tied record wise with the Los Angeles Lakers at 31-44, but San Antonio owns the tiebreaker with the Lakers, so they have that 10th spot right now.

It looks like the other eight Western conference playoff teams are set and the only thing that there is to watch is if the Minnesota Timberwolves can get out of the 7th spot in the conference and pass either the Denver Nuggets or Utah Jazz who they trail by two games.

Coming down the stretch there are some compelling games to keep an eye on and see which teams end up in which spots for the playoffs.

  1. The old cliche about cream rising to the top is appropro here. Both Boston and Milwaukee have been on a tear recently.
Right now, I’m wondering if the Bulls will play Philadelphia in the first round of the playoffs. If that happens, and Philadelphia is happy, I think that series will only go 5 games with the 76’ers picking up the easy win.

The Eastern Conference is so competitive but keep an eye out for players claiming injuries so the team can jockey for positions.
