Let’s call it Wednesday

It’s been quite an off season for the NFL and it’s nowhere close to being over. I don’t remember another time when so many big-name players have changed teams and that may not be done either. There are reports that the Kansas City Chiefs have had serious discussions with the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets about possibly trading wide receiver Tyreek Hill. If this deal happens Hill would join quite a long list of players that will be on new teams to start next season.

We’ve already seen who many experts think is the best wide receiver in football in Davante Adams traded, so maybe it shouldn’t be a big surprise if a wide receiver the caliber of Hill is dealt.

Now wide receivers aren’t the only players being moved. Quarterbacks are a hot topic as well and there was another name quarterback traded earlier this week when the Atlanta Falcons deal their long-time quarterback Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts for a 3rd round pick in the upcoming draft.

Ryan joins Russell Wilson, Carson Wentz, Mitchell Trubisky, Deshaun Watson, Drew Lock and Marcus Mariota as starters for new teams this coming season. Add in the recently unretired Tom Brady and the resigned Jameis Winston and you’d think that the quarterback position would be settled for almost every team, but there are still a couple of quarterbacks that could still be available. The question is, where would they go?

The Cleveland Browns already had Baker Mayfield on their roster when they traded for Watson. Mayfield has asked for a trade, but the Browns haven’t seemed interested in moving him just yet. With the allegations against Watson, you have to wonder if the Browns will hold onto Mayfield until the NFL renders a decision on Watson’s case. With Mayfield in the last year of his rookie contract he’s not a big hit to the Browns salary cap, so holding onto him isn’t an issue. The issue might be will Mayfield report if he’s still with Cleveland.

The other quarterback that we always hear is going to be traded is Jimmy Garoppolo, but so far, the San Francisco 49ers have held onto him. Garoppolo is recovering from shoulder surgery. so, teams are going to want to make sure he’s completely healthy before they trade for him. You have to wonder how interested the 49ers are in trading Garoppolo. San Francisco drafted Trey Lance with the 3rd overall pick in last year’s draft, but it’s possibly Lance isn’t quite ready to take over as San Francisco’s starting quarterback. If the 49ers think that Lance isn’t ready, they might hang onto Garoppolo and let him be their starting quarterback.

Now if Mayfield and Garoppolo are available is there a team out there that is still looking for a quarterback. It seems as though most experts think that teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints and Detroit Lions will use 1st round picks in the draft to add a young quarterback, so they’re probably not interested in trading for Mayfield or Garoppolo.

Now there is a chance that the Carolina Panthers might be in the market for a quarterback. The Panthers inquired about Watson and their where some reports that they were interested in some of the other quarterbacks that have been moved.

Carolina has the 6th pick in the 1st round of the upcoming draft, but it’s doubtful they’d use that pick on a quarterback when they quite a few other needs. There’s always a possibility that they could trade back in the 1st round and get take a quarterback with a later pick they acquired, but that’s a lot of speculation there.

The Panthers have San Darnold penciled in as their starting quarterback and the question they have to answer is would a quarterback like Mayfield or Garoppolo be an upgrade. Mayfield has had his issues as the starter in Cleveland and while Garoppolo has taken a team to the Super Bowl he doesn’t seem to get a lot of credit for doing that. Would a move from Darnold to Mayfield or Garoppolo make Carolina a playoff contender?

Here’s where you jump in and let me know what you think. What do you think of the way the NFL off season has gone? I’m also interested to know where you think quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo will end up at the start of the 2022 season.

  1. Garoppolo has made mega bucks despite being at best a mediocre quarterback. He might as well reap the financial rewards as long as possible.
There have been some interesting moves so far and it looks like the usual suspects will fight it out for the playoff berths next season.
