How was your week

Posted: February 1, 2020 by Sports Time Radio in sports

After a week off it’s time for the Super Bowl. This year the game is being played in Miami and it’s the AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs taking on the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers. Now there’s a chance that there’s going to be some bad weather in the Miami area, but it appears as the weather is not going to impact the game.

Like we like to do on the Sports Time Radio podcast we’ve made our picks for the game. We pick the winner o the game with the final score and who we think will win the MVP award. Here’s what we came up with.

Dan the Man has Kansas City winning the game 42-34 with Patrick Mahomes as the MVP.

Schaumburg Stu has San Francisco winning the game 28-24 with Jimmy Garoppolo as the MVP.

Mr. Fantasy has Kansas City winning the game 35-27 with Damon Williams as the MVP.

Now I did go out and solicit an outside opinion. Not only so we would have an odd number of picks, but in all honesty I wasn’t expecting to receive a pick from Mr. Fantasy.

I reached out to my good friend Greg who just happens to be a huge Oakland Raiders or I guess now I should say Las Vegas Raiders fan. Greg has San Francisco winning the game 31-21 with Emmanuel Sanders as the MVP.

That just leaves my pick. I’m taking Kansas City to win the game 24-21 with Tyreek Hill as the MVP.

Now I’d like to hear from you. Please leave your picks in the comment section; so we know who you got winning the game. Don’t forget the final score and who you have winning the MVP award.

I don’t have a huge rooting interest in either team; so I’m hoping that we get a good game and it does appear to be setting up that way. San Francisco has one of the best defensive in the NFL and they’re going to have to find a way to slow down the Kansas City offense led by Mahomes. The 49ers defense have the ability to put pressure on the quarterback rushing just their four down lineman, but Mahomes also has very good movement and the ability to escape the pass rush.

Both teams have kind of unknows running the football for them. San Francisco has been going with a 3-headed monster. Raheem Mostert has been getting the majority of the carries, but Tevin Coleman is healthy and should get his touches out of the backfield. Matt Breida has also had success running the football; so he might get a carry or two as well. Williams has pretty much been Kansas City’s only running back this post season, but Mahomes is the teams leading rusher. The Chiefs do have LeSean McCoy on their roster, but he hasn’t played this post season.

Will San Francisco continue to have success running the football? Can Kansas City find success running the football?

Throwing the football is where Kansas City appears to have the advantage. Mahomes has Hill, Sammy Watkins and Travis Kelce as his primary targets along with Williams out of the backfield. George Kittle is San Francisco’s top receiving threat, but they also have Sanders, Kendrick Bourne and Deebo Samuel at wide receiver. In their two playoffs games Garrapolo has only thrown the football 27 times and you have to wonder if he has to throw the football more will one of his receivers stand out?

Which player do you feel has to have a big game for his team to win? Is it a quarterback, a running back, a wide receiver or a tight end that needs to break out tomorrow.

Now I’ve heard a lot of people talk about football being over, but that’s not true. Seven days from now the XFL kicks off their season. It’s an 8 team league with a 10-week schedule plus playoffs. The games will be televised on ABC, Fox and ESPN.

The first game of the season has a 1:00 p.m. start time next Saturday and it’s the Seattle Dragons vs. the DC Defenders on ABC. The second Saturday game kickoffs at 4:00 p.m. and has the L.A. Wildcats vs. the Houston Roughnecks on Fox. There are also two games on Sunday. Sunday’s first game also kicks off at 1:00 p.m. with the Tampa Bay Vipers vs. the New York Guardians on Fox. Week 1 of the XFL season wraps up with the St. Louis Battlehawks vs. the Dallas Renegades. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 4:00 p.m. on ESPN.

Now unlike the Alliance of American Football the XFL will have some names that you’ll recognize. While the AAF was looking to be more of a developmental league to the NFL the XFL is just looking to be a football league.

I watched the first couple of weeks of the AAF, but I didn’t enjoy the football that was being played. I’m hoping that the XFL will have a little better football than the AAF did. I’m planning on watching and seeing how some of the new rules work out and if the football is good quality. Are you going to check out the XFL?

Tonight Fox will be showing the NFL honors; it’s the NFL’s year end award ceremony. There are 20 awards being handed out including MVP and Walter Payton Man of the Year. They’ll also hand out offensive and defensive Rookie of the Year awards. They’ll also hand out the Daily Fantasy Player of the Year award.

I think that everyone has Lamar Jackson winning the MVP award, but other than that I’m not sure who’s going to win what. Do you have picks for who will win what award?

  1. At least I was consistent with my weekend picks!
Although Kansas City won the game after San Francisco blew a 4th Qtr lead, I still find Mahones to be far from a classical QB. Somehow his scrambling worked in this game and he is very athletic, but I’m not as sold as many people are who annoint him as the next great QB.
