Day 2 at Wrigley Field North and John Lackey is searching for his eighth win of the season.  His last appearance in May against the Brewers, he only gave up  a run on four hits but did not get a decision as the Cubs lost by one in the 13th inning.  He’s taking on the 23 year old righty, Zach Davies, who is facing the Cubs for the first time this season sporting a 6-4 record.

Dexter Fowler would not lead off this game with home run.  Anthony Rizzo would double but that would be in all the action in the first.  Wilson Contreras and Addison Russell would walk in the second but again no runs.  Kris Bryant would single in the third but no runs. Davies would retire the next nine Cubs but is still taken out in the top of the 7th after giving uo a leadoff single to Ben Zobrist.  After getting Contreras out, Will Smith would replace Davies.  After giving up a single to Heyward, Russell would drive in Zo, giving the Cubs their first run of the game.

John Lackey would strike out the first batter but gives up a single to Scooter Gennett but Lackey gets the second out.  Jonathan Lucroy would get into a full count after several foul balls and Pat Hughes more or less calling it, Lucroy sends a line drive to left center for a two run home run.

Lackey would add a couple base runners in the second and third but doesn’t earn anymore runs.  In the top of the 4th, he would give up a solo home run to Kirk Nieuwenhuis sending Bernie down the slide again.  Lackey makes it through the 5th and 6th inning with no issues.

Clayton Richard enters the game in the bottom of the 7th giving up a double to Hernan Perez, then hits Ramon Flores.  Maddon would bring Adam Warren in.  Jake Elmore would pinch hit for Will Smith sacrifice bunting to push both runners up but Warren gets out of the inning.  He would stay in for the 8th, gets two outs but puts Ryan Braun and Lucroy on. Maddon would bring in newly acquired Mike Montgomery who gives up a three run home run to Kirk Nieuwenhuis putting the Brewers up 6-1.

Carlos Torres would come in giving up a single to Zo but would close out the game giving the W to the Brewers.  Lackey would be charged with a Loss today putting him at 7 and 7 on the season.

The Cubs head to Milwaukee for the weekend and depending on the whether up there, despite being in a dome, it can be very humid with the roof closed.  Let’s hope Jason Hammel has been eating his potato chips with sea salt as he searches for win number 9 against the Brew Crew.  Jimmy Nelson is looking for his seventh win of the season and his first in three starts against the Cubs.

Dexter Fowler is back.  He gets into a hitters count and launches a lead off home run and he’s back!  Scooter Gennett would cause an error allowing Kris Bryant to reach first and would steal second.  Wilson Contreras walks but Heyward would ends the inning with a ground out.  Cubs up by 1.

Jimmy Nelson loads the bases in the second by throwing the ball away to allow Addison Russell to reach first.  He walks Miguel Montero and Jason Hammel reaches on a bunt.  With the bases loaded, Fowler is up again this time sends a ground ball to left bringing both Russell and Montero for his third RBI since returning from the DL.  Bryant reaches on a fielder’s choice with Hammel out at home.  Anthony Rizzo sends a fly ball to center scored as a sac fly as Fowler scores.  Cubs 4-0

Jason Hammel flys through the first two innings but gives up a leadoff single to Hernan Perez.  Perez ends up at second after Nelson’s sac bunt and steals third with Jonathan Villar at the plate who ends up walking but is picked off to end the inning.  Hammel has a quick 4th but not before giving up a one out home run to Ryan Braun.  Cubs 4, Brewers 1.

Hammel leads off the 5th by walking Kirk Nieuwenhuis who scores on Perez’s double to left but he gets out of the inning.  Hammel starts the 6th off giving up a lead off double to Scooter Gennett.  Joel Maddon brings in Carl Edwards, Jr who gets out of the inning quickly.  Cubs 4, Brewers 2.

Travis Wood enters the 7th inning getting the first two outs but a throwing error by Montero puts Ramon Flores on to bring in Justin Grimm who strikes out Will Middlebrooks to end the inning.

Nelson would also last only 5 innings.  Carlos Torres would enter the game for the Brewers working the 6th and 7th only giving up one hit with two strikeouts.  Corey Knebel enters the game in the top of the 8th and leads off with a walk to Contreras.  Heyward flys out but Russell singles on an infield ground ball.  Montero would drive in Wilson.  Tommy La Stella enters the game but goes down swinging.

Pedro strop enters the 8th giving up a two out walk to Ryan Braun but gives up no hits or runs.  Despite Folwer’s lead off single in the top of the 9th, the Cubs go down with out adding any more runs.  Hector Rondon enters the 9th striking out Chris Carter but walks Jake Elmore.  He strikes out Perez and gets Flores to flyout to end the game.  Cubs win and Rondon is credited with a Save.

Jake Arrieta enters tonight’s game searching for lucky number 13.  He would be challenging Noah Syndergaard looking to hit win number 10.

The Cubs would open the game up giving Noah some trouble early on. He is able to hold them at bay.  The third inning would see Rizzo and Zobrist striking out.  With two outs, Wilson Contreras would smack a line drive double to right.  With Jason Heyward at the plate, Noah would throw a wild pitch, Contreras takes advantage taking third base but Rene Rivera’s throws it away allowing Wilson to snag home and the first run of the game.

Jake would help himself in the bottom of the fourth hitting a double to right.  Tommy La Stella would send a line drive t right fielder Michael Conforto, he sends it home but Jake is able to get under the tag scoring the second run of the game.  Terry Collins would challenge the call and it would be over turned in favor of the Mets and the third out of the inning.

Jake would hold the Mets to two singles and a walk through 5 innings.  The top of the 6th, Jose Reyes would send a line drive to right making it all the way to third base for his first triple of the year.  Curtis Granderson would fly out to Heyward but it would be enough for Reyes to score and tie the game at 1.

Jake would make it through 7 full inning giving up 1 run on 5 hits striking out 8.  Pedro Strop would take the 8th inning and make it quick.  Hector Rondon would enter the 9th but would immediately give up a single to James Loney, Neil Walker would force him out. Astrubal Cabrera would single pushing walked to second but with two outs, it would be Rene Rivera’s single to right that drives Walker in for the second run of the game for the Mets.

Jeurys Familia would try to keep the Cubs from winning.  He would have trouble by walking Russell and Montero.  Javier Baez would single to load the bases.   Matt Szczur would send a grounder to first, Loney throws it home for the first out.  Kris Bryant would send a grounder to third but Jose Reyes to Neil Walker to Loney ends the game for the Cubs.

The series finale between the Cubs and the Texas Rangers ends today with John Lackey seeking his eighth win against the strong Cole Hamels looking to grab win number 10.  Hamels would strikeout the first six batters.  Cole gives puts the first batter on due to a fielding error by Adrian Beltre with Albert Almora taking first base.  With two outs, Javier Baez sends a line drive to left field allowing Almora to cross home for the Cubs first run of the game.

The Rangers were quick to end first inning but Lackey gives up back to back singles to start the second off to Pronce Fileser and Ryan Rua.  With one out, Elvis Andrus drives in Prince with a line drive to center field.  Robinson Chirinos sends a fly ball to Almora but it’s far enough to bring Rua in for the second run for the Rangers.

The Rangers are up 2-1, going into the 4th and Lackey assists in adding another run by walking Ryan Rua and Nomar Mazara.  Chirinos’s double to left brings in Rua for the third run of the game for the Rangers putting them up by 2.

Lackey is able to hold the Rangers up until the eighth inning when he gives up a leadoff home run to Ian Desmond but is able to end the inning completing eight innings giving up 4 runs on 6 hits but strikes out 8.   I would say a pretty typical outing for Lackey but without the run support.  Clayton Richard enters game preserving the game for Lackey and the Cubs.

Cole Hamels combats Lackey with eight full innings but only gives up only one run but strikes out seven.  Sam Dyson enters the game for the Rangers to hold the game for the Rangers and receives his 19th save of the year.  The Cubs took the series, everyone wants a sweep but this is still a positive weekend for the Cubs.

John Lackey looks to stay above .500 with another win to go into the All Star break on a good note.  Jonathon Niese would get the start for the Pirates and immediately get the ball rolling for the Cubs with singles to lead off man Ben Zobrist, then on one out to Anthony Rizzo and to load the bases Wilson Contreras.  Addison Russell would also smack a single but this one gives him two RBI’s.  Lackey would only give up one single in the bottom half. After the 1st, Cubs 2-0.

Cubs would go down quick in the top of the 2cd but Lackey would allow a solo home run to star off the bottom half to Sean Rodriguez.  Adam Frazier singles and scores on Eric Fryer’s one out double to left.  With two outs, John Jaso sends a line drive to right scoring Fryer.  The Pirates are now up 3-2.

Kris Bryant stars off the 3rd with a walk and advances to third on Rizzo’s double to right.  Contreras would ground out to first but drives in Bryant to tie the game at 3.  Andrew McCutchen would lead off the bottom half of the 3rd with a solo home run to take the lead.

The back and forth of leads would stop in the top of the 4th, after Albert Almora, Jr launches his 2cd home run of the season driving in Baez to take the lead, 5-4.  Niese would then give up back to back singles to Bryant and Rizzo prompting his removal for Arquimedes Caminero to end the inning.

Lackey would make it to the 7th walking Josh Bell and giving up a single to John Jaso.  With no outs, Maddon brings in Pedro Strop.  He gets the first out and the second out from McCutchen but is scored as a sac fly to tie the game at 5.

Pirates set up man, Tony Watson enters the game and immediately strikes out Almora but gives up a double to Matt Szcuzr.  Zo pops out on a bunt.  With two outs Bryant’s sends a line drive to left scoring Szczur for the Cubs to take the lead again giving Watson a blown save.

Carl Edwards, Jr and Hector Rondon take the last two innings of the game for the hold and save as Strop is awarded the W with a blown save.  Lackey would go six innings giving up five runs on seven hits but strikes out nine only walking two.  Not the greatest outing but with the bats hitting and the bullpen holding, the Cubs take a game from the Pirates putting their lead at 7 above the second place Cardinals.

The Cubs have just dropped five games and the first the series against division rival Pittsburgh Pirates.  Jon Lester gets the nod looking for his first win since June 18th with the Pirates in Chicago.  He’s also looking to have a better start since July 3 when he only went 1 & 1/3 innings.   With just his third start for the Bucs, Chad Kuhl is looking for his second win of his young career but it would not start off smoothly with a one out walk to Kris Bryant who would score on Ben Zobrist putting the Cubs up by 2 in the first.

Lester would get through the the 1st with a walk to David Freese but gets out of it quick with a ground out double play.  He would then start the 2cd off with a walk to Jung Ho Kang, then a single to Starling Marte, then another walk to Sean Rodriguez.  He give the Bucs their first run by hitting Josh Harrison.  Eric Fryer would send a fly ball to center, scored as a sac fly scoring Marte.  With Kuhl in the box, Wilson Contreras would attempt a pick off a throwin error would allow Sean to score the third run of the inning, Bucs up by 1.

Anthony Rizzo starts off the 3rd with a triple.  Wilson would make up for the run he gave to the Bucs by driving Rizzo home on a ground ball between short and third.  Jason Heyward bumps him up to second as he singles to left.  With an early pitching change, Juan Nicasio enters the game and it would be Javier Baez with two outs drives in Wilson to take the lead by 1.

Lester starts the 3rd off by giving up a lead off home run to Andrew McCutchen to tie the game.  Sean Rodriguez with two outs, also smacks a solo shot to left center but he gets out of the inning.  Pirates 5-4.

Juan gives up a leadoff double to Bryant that scores on Rizzo’s line drive double to right.  Arauimedes Caminero would enter the game to close out the top half.  Lester would be pulled for Adam Warren ho gives up a single and a walk and it would be McCuthen’s single that brings in both base runners to put the Bucs up by 2.

Caminero strikes out the side in the 5th.  In the bottom half, Warren would load the bases walking Marte, intentionally walking Matt Joyce and a single to Eric Fryer.  Josh Bell Would enter the game pinch hitting for Caminero.  On a 1-1 count, Bell would take Warren out of the park and into the Alleghany River for a Grand Slam for his first major league home run.  Jody Mercer would follow with a solo shot to add to the lead, 12-5 Bucs.

A.J. Schugel would enter the game waking Bryant who advances to third on Rizzo’s single and scores on Zo’s double play ground ball. Bucs 12-6.

Spencer Patton, Justin Grimm and Hector Rondon each take an inning each seeing three batters with Rondon striking out the side.

The Cubs would get a base runner in each of the last three innings but no one crosses the plate or brings them within reach to winning.  The Pirates move to second place putting themselves within 6.5 games.  The Cubs need a W on Sunday and to be honest, need the All Star break off to gather themselves but maybe the festivities can be a good change of pace for them breaking up the recent string of losses this month.

We start the second half half of the season in Wrigley Filed with the Cubs taking on the Cincinnati Reds with Kyle Hendricks heading to the mound taking on Cody Reed looking for his first win of the season.  Kyle would go 5 and 1/3 innings giving up only  4 hits and his first and only run in the 6th inning after he is taken out out of the games with two men on.  Carl Edwards, Jr enters the game to get Adam Duvall to flyout scoring Joey Votto credited to Kyle.  Carl would close out the 6th which would end his time in the game.

The Cubs bounce back after being swept by the Mets early on Independence Day.  Kris Bryant receives a one out walk and Wilson Contreras is hit with 2 outs.  Addison Russell sends a line drive to left scoring Bryant.  Then Jason Heyward sends his own 2 out line drive to left scoring 2 more runs.  The Reds decide to intentionally walk Cubs rookie Jeimer Candelario to get to Hendricks who strikes out.  Cubs 3-0.

In the 2cd, Javier Baez would reach with 1 out on a fielding error by Brandon Phillips.  Kris Bryant drives him home with his 24th home run of the season.  Wilson Contreras launches his 5th home run of the season.  Reed gets out of the inning, but the Cubs are up 6-0.

The 4th inning would see Baez singling on 1 out and moves to second on Bryant’s walk.  Antony Rizzo would move them both up by getting hit.  Contreras’s ground ball would force Baez out at home.  With bases loaded, Addison would send a sharp ground ball to third that goes through his legs after hitting his glove for an error scoring Bryant and Rizzo.  Cubs 8-0.

Josh Smith enters the 6th inning giving up a leadoff single to Rizzo who scores on Russell’s 9th home run of the season.  Blake Wood enters the games to give up a single but gets out of the inning.

Travis Wood enters the game in the 7th and gets the 1st 2 outs but gives up a single to Ivan De Jesus and then a home run to Zack Cozart and a solo home run to Eugenio Suarez to redeem himself on the earlier fielding error.

Pedro Strop enters the 8th giving up a single to Jay Bruce but gets out the inning quickly.  The bottom half would see Jason Heyward called out on a ground ball but with Maddon challenging, the call would be overturned.  With 1 out, Maddon would pinch hit for Strop with Jason Hammel?  Hammel gets a single but Russ Ohlendorf who entered the game for the Reds in the 8th  gets out of the inning.

Hector Rondon would enter the top of the 9th to finish the game and close out the game and gets the first batter to ground out on the 1st pitch.  De Jesus would smack a single to get on base.  On his 5th pitch of the inning, Zack Cozart would send a ground ball to Addison Russell to Javier Baez to Rizzo for a game ending double play.

We’re a couple days off from being half way through the season. The Cubs are looking to come back after losing late last night to the Mets.  Jason Hammel is looking for his 8th win of the season and he can, if the bats are flying tonight in Citi Field.  The Cubs hitters are facing Jacob deGrom, who is looking for just his 4th W of the season.

After a rain delay, the game got under way to a quick start for both pitchers deGrom would walk Kris Bryant in the first but strikes out 4 batters in the first 2 innings.  Hammel gets through the first quickly but gives up back to back home runs to James Loney and Asdrubal Cabrera to start the second but gets out of the inning.  As the 3rd inning starts, the rain would start lightly but begin to pour causing another delay over an hour.  Mets 2-0.

Hammel would lead off the 3rd for a quick top half of the inning. He would start the bottom half strongly getting the first 2 outs but gives up a single to Neil Walker then walks Yoenis Cespedes. Two men on for James Loney who sends a screamer to center field for a double scoring 2 more runs.  Mets now up by 4.

With one out in the 4th, Kris Bryant would launch a solo home run to the second deck to finally put the Cubs on the board.  Hammel would strikeout the first batter in the bottom of the fourth but walks Wilmer Flores, them gives up a single to Travis d’Arnaud.  Jacob moves them both up on a sac bunt.  Brandon Nimmo would launch his 1st home run of the season.  Mets up 7-1.

Hammel ends the top of 5th with a line out.  He starts the bottom half with a lead off home run to Cespedes, then a single to Loney who is now 3 for 3.  Asdrubal would bring him in with his 10th home run of the season.  That would be enough for Maddon as he brings in Spencer Patton to get out of the inning.  Mets 10-1.

The top of the 6th starts off great for the Cubs with Albert Almora getting a single then moves to 2cd on Matt Szczur’s single to left.  But with Heyward at the plate, the rain would come down again causing yet another delay.  Hopefully for the Cubs, the game isn’t called.

After the delay, Terry Collins would bring Jerry Blevins in to replace deGrom to get the next 3 batters out.  Trevor Cahill enters the bottom half giving up a single but gets out of the inning quickly.

Hansel Robles enters the 8th, giving a lead off double to Wilson Contreras who makes it to 3rd on a passed ball.  Addison Russell brings him home on a sac fly for the Cubs.  That’s all the action, Cubs 2, Mets 10.  Cahill stays in for the 7th putting one man on but gets out of the inning.

Jason Heyward is the only one to reach base in the top of the 8 against Seth Lugo.  Trevor Cahill stays in putting 2 runners on but gets out of the inning.

Seth Lugo stays in the top of the 9th giving up a single to Baez then hits Russell.  Maddon would leave Cahill in to bat, watching the third strike and Almora would pop out to end the inning and the game.

Not the best outing for Hammel going only 4 innings giving up 10 runs on 9 hits.  That’s 2 for the Mets with 2 to go.

The Cubs are looking to avoid the regular season sweep in what many are calling the “rematch.”  Jon Lester takes to the mound against Noah Syndergaard.  Lester is looking to get his 10th win of the season.  The game would seem to start off in the Cubs direction in the first inning, starting with Jason Heyward’s double to left and scores on Anthony Rizzo’s line drive to right.  The Mets would tie it up in the bottom half with Curtis Granderson’s 14h home run of the season.

Baez would start the second inning with a single but gets picked off, then David Ross and Jon Lester would strike out to end the inning.  Wilmer Flores would start the bottom half off with a solo home run to Center.  Loney would strike out for the first out.  Matt Reynolds would belt a double to right and score on Rene Rivera’s 3rd home run of the season.  Syndergaard would reach on a walk.  Juan Lagares would double.  With only one out, Curtis Granderson’s would send a line drive to center scoring Noah.  Then Yoenis Cespedes would drive in Lagares with a single to right.  Lester them gives up back to back singles to Neil Walker and Flores driving in two more runs.  This prompts Maddon to pull Lester for his shortest outing of his career 1 & 1/3 innings putting him in position for the loss.  Spencer Patton would enter the game and get out of the second inning.  After 2, it’s Mets 8, Cubs 1.

Patton would make it through the 5th, adding a run in the 4th and 2 more in the 5th to make it 11-1, Mets.  Joel Peralta would take the 6th and the 7th adding 2 more runs in the 7th by hitting Brandon Nimmo who scores on Kelly Johnson’s home run.  Mets 13 to 1.  Maddon would go with one of his interesting moves, I can only assume to preserve the bullpen by bringing in Miguel Montero to pitch the 8th.  He loads the bases but only allows 1 run, giving the Mets 14 runs.

Logsn Verret would enter the game in the top of the 9th giving up a leadoff home run to Wilson Contreras.  This is the start of a 13 run rally as Javier Baez would double with one out.  Matt Szczur would reach on a throwing error but pitcher Montero, would flyout.  Addison Russell would single to load the bases.  Jason Heyward would step into the box with bases loaded and Logan Verret would throw a wild pitch that would score Baez for the 3rd run of the game in the Cubs rally, however Heyward would ground out to end the inning and the game completing the sweep for the Mets.  Hopefully, they can start the 4th of July with a bang in Cincinnati!

The Cubs look to break the hole they dug themselves losing 6 out of 7 games.  The Great One, Jake Arrieta is seeking his 12th win of the season against the Reds Dan Strailey.  The Cubs wouldn’t let the former Cubs get past the 4th inning.  Kris Bryant would start the scoring in the top of the 1st with his 18th double bringing in Jadon Heyward and he’d score on Miguel Mobtero’s sac fly.  The Reds would strike back and tie it up in the bottom of the first with Adam Duvall’s 17th double to left scoring Billy Hamilton and Joey Votto.

In Kris Bryant’s second at bat in the top of third, he’d send a fly ball to left center for his 19th home run of the year.  Just like chess, in a counter move Jay Bruce would send Zack Cozart across home on a ground ball single to center, tieing the game at 3.

After Chris Coghlan and Arrieta start the first with singles on one out, Heyward drives in Chris on a line drive to center.  Bryant would jack his 20th homer of the season to left driving in Arrieta and Heyward.  After just 3 & 2/3 innings, Strailey would be pulled to make it a bullpen day for the Reds.  Jumbo Diaz would get out of the inning after giving up a single to Russel.  Jake would allow to baserunners in the bottom half but does not allow any runs.  Cubs 7-3.

With Michael Lorenzen on the mound and two outs, Arrieta cracks his 2nd home run of the season adding to his lead but would cut his lead to 3 in the bottom half by walking Billy Hamilton then giving up a home run to Jay Bruce.  He does get out of the inning.  Cubs 8-5.

Bryant would continue his in game hitting streak with a double to lead off the 6th but wouldn’t cross the plate.  Trevor Cahill enters the bottom of the 6th walking Jose Peraza who then scores on Tucker Barnhart’s double to right.  He would get two outs but after a single to Billy Hanilton, Joel Maddon would bring in Travis Wood.

Russ Olendorf enters the 7th getting the first 1-2-3 inning of the game.  Wood gets the first out in the bottom half but gives up a double to Duvall who makes it to third after Pedro Strop comes in getting the second out of the inning.  Duvall does score from 3rd on Pedro’s wild pitch.

Olendorf seems to be calming the Cubs down by retiring his 5th batter in a row but with two outs gives up back to back dingers to Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo but does get out of the inning.  Strop makes it a 1-2-3 bottom of the 8th after a bunch of defensive changes by Maddon.

Albert Almora, Jr entered the game in the bottom of 8th leading off the 9th with a single against Blake Wood.  Russel would cause Jose Peraza to commit an error to reach 1st.  Javier Baez would send a line drive to center scoring Almora but trying to stretch it to two gets caught at 2cd base.  Wood gets out of the inning.  Cubs 11-7.

Joel Peralta enters the game for the Cubs to shut down the Reds and gets Billy Hamilton to strikeout but gives up a solo homer to Joey Votto.  He gets the next out but Maddon brings in Hector Rondon to get Duvall to pop out to end the game.

While the Cubs did win, not the best outing for the Great One and the bullpen.  Jake goes only 5 innings giving up 5 runs on 4 hits striking out 4.  The bullpen gave up 3 runs on 4 hits.  It may have been a different outcome if not for Kris Bryant’s 5 for 5 with 3 home runs driving in 6 RBI’s.   Either way, Cubs win!
