As we get closer and closer to the Major League Baseball trade deadline we’re hearing a lot of rumors, but yesterday there was actually a trade made.
The Los Angeles Dodgers sent two relievers Nick Robertson and Justin Hagenman to the Boston red Sox in return for former Dodger Enrique “Kiki” Hernandez.
Hernandez played for the Dodgers for six seasons 2015 until 2020 and was part of the Dodgers World Series winning 2020 team.
Hernandez signed a three-year $24 million-dollar free agent deal with the Red Sox after the 2020 season. He is in the final year of that contract and Boston is going to pick up $2.5 million of the remaining $3.6 million dollars Hernandez is owed.
Hernandez found success with the Dodgers as a super utility player, but his luck hasn’t been as good with the Red Sox especially this season. Hernandez is hitting .222 this season.
There was talk of him being the Red Sox everyday centerfielder when they signed him, but he’s spent time not only in center field but at 2nd base and shortstop. Hernandez has spent the majority of his time this season as the Red Sox short stop, but in his first two seasons with the team he played more in the outfield.
The move to shortstop for Hernandez came after Trevor Story was injured and defensively Hernandez has been a liability. Hernandez is a -6 in Defensive Runs Saved and a -13 in Outs Above Average.
As for who the Red Sox are getting in return. Robertson is a 25-year-old right-handed pitcher who’s appeared in 9 games for the Dodgers this season. Robertson is 0-1 with a 6.13 ERA over 10 1/3rd innings. He’s struck out 13 while walking 4 and has only given up 1 home run.
Hagenman is a 26-year-old right-handed pitcher. He’s made 25 appearances for the Dodgers Triple-A team affiliate the Oklahoma City Dodgers in the PCL. He’s 4-0 with a 2.78 ERA and 1 save. He’s struck out 60 batters while walking 11 over 55 innings.
Both Robertson and Hagenman will start their Red Sox careers at Triple-A Worchester, but there’s a possibility that Robertson could be brought up quickly to work out of the Boston bullpen.
We’ve had a couple of other teams make some minor moves. The Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays all added some pitching depth which is to be expected from any team that thinks it’s a contender. I’m sure there will be a lot of pitchers changing teams before the trade deadline hits.
I guess will have to wait a little longer to see if we get some bigger name players dealt. As for now it’s just talk.
How long do you think it will be before we see a bigger name player on the move? Considering that the trade deadline is August 1st, you’d think it would be soon.
Don’t forget to look for me on Twitter @Burketime.
Not much going on right now with less than a week to go before the trade deadline.
Hernandez has always been a fan favorite when he was the Dodgers and then didn’t give up much to get him. I think he’ll be a lot better now that he’s not with the Red Sox.
