How was your week

It looks like Deshaun Watson has a new team. The now former Houston Texans quarterback was traded to the Cleveland Browns along with a 2024 5th round draft pick. I return the Texans will receive 1st round picks in 2022, 2023 and 2024 plus a 3rd round pick in 2023 and a 4th round pick in 2024. That’s a lot for give up, but it’s clear that Cleveland sees Watson as their long-term franchise quarterback as after this deal is all said and done Watson received a new 5-year contract for $230 million dollars from the Browns.

Watson’s path leading up to this trade to Cleveland is very similar to the situation that Trevor Bauer of the Los Angeles Dodgers is in. Now Bauer hasn’t threatened to sit out or anything like Watson did, but off the field their situations were similar.

Bauer went through a situation where he was accused by a woman of sexual assaulting her while Watson has been accused by 22 different women that he committed sexual misconduct with them. To be fair to both men neither of them will be facing criminal charges from these accusations and I’m not a lawyer, so I’m not going to try and get into that part of these cases even though I’m sure there will be civil lawsuits against both men if there aren’t already. What I wanted to look at as how both of the leagues these men play in handled these situations.

Bauer made 17 starts for the Dodgers last season with the last of those starters being on June 28th before being placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball. Watson didn’t play in a game for the Texans last season but wasn’t placed on any type of leave or even suspended by the National Football League. And yes, before you ask both men were paid while they sat out.

Now Bauer’s administrative leave has continued to be extended by Major League Baseball while Watson got his wish and was traded by the Texans and received a new big money contract. Bauer will be on administrative until at least the end of the month while the National Football League has not announced any type of discipline against Watson as of now.

Not to try and diminish what Bauer was accused of, but it was one woman who made accusations against Bauer while it was women that made their accusations against Watson. While both of these accusations are terrible it seems as though Bauer is paying the price at least professionally while Watson seems to be moving on with his playing career. Like I mentioned earlier neither man was nor will be charged with a crime, but it seems as though Watson has shown traits of a serial offender while Bauer may have had a rough sexual encounter that is being reported as consensual.

After looking at what both of these men are accused of doing, I can’t quite figure out how Bauer has been held out while as of now Watson will be the Browns starting quarterback in Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season.

I’d like for you to jump in and comment on these situations. Maybe one of you who reads this blog is a lawyer or works for a lawyer and you can explain in greater detail the inner working of these cases to me. I’d greatly appreciate the assistance.

Before I went to bed last night, I was sad to see the report that ESPN’s long time NFL reporter John Clayton had passed away.

Clayton spent over 20 years working at ESPN as their NFL insider and garnered the nickname “The Professor” for his insights into what was going on in the NFL.

I’m sure just about everyone will remember Clayton’s Sportscenter commercial where he does his report and then crank the heavy metal music up and let’s his hair down. Then before the commercial ends he jumps into his bed grabs what appears to be a container of Chinese food from the nightstand and yells over the loud music “Mom I’m done with my segment”. It’s definitely one of the best Sportscenter commercial ESPN has ever produced.

Clayton was 67 years old, and it was said that he passed away after a brief illness.

  1. Bauer may be a sleaze but his one encounter pales before Watson’s many exploits. I’m surprised the league is letting him play this season because there has to be a lot of credibility behind so many women’s complaints.
But I suppose that Cleveland and the NFL will figure that the public will forget about the issue after awhile and concentrate on the next one that comes along.
