Let’s call it Wednesday

Well Week 1 of the NFL season is in the books and it’s time for every fantasy football team owner to overreact after just one week. Now unless you suffered a serious injury to one of your top players in Week 1 there’s no real reason to panic just yet.

How many fantasy football owners are panicking right now about the way Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers player? Now there’s no questioning that Rodgers was terrible in Week 1. He went 15 of 28 for 133 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Now everyone is going to read into this because of the off season issues Rodgers had with the Packers, but again it’s just one week.

To be fair the New Orleans Saints have a pretty solid defense; so that contributed to Rodgers struggles. How many people think that Rodgers struggles are going to continue when he faces the Detroit Lions this Monday night?

Now Rodgers wasn’t the only big time fantasy pick that had some issues during Week 1. Throw Derrick Henry’s name into that mix. Henry carried the football 17 times for 58 yards averaging 3.4 yards per carry. Henry did add 3 receptions for 19 yards, but didn’t find his way into the end zone as his Tennessee Titans lost to the Arizona Cardinals 38-13.

Any time your team gets down early like the Titans did it can take carries away from a running back and even though he had 17 carries that’s a low number for Henry who usually carries the football 20 plus times a game. Tennessee does have a tough Week 2 match up as they have to travel to Seattle to face the Seahawks, but you have to think that Henry will have a better game running the football in Week 2.

Those are just a couple of names that popped into my head tat struggled in Week 1, but that list could go on and on if I wanted to keep it going. Like I mentioned early; it’s just Week one of a 17 game season. There shouldn’t be a need to panic with your fantasy team, but there’s always someone in every league that does.

I went 1-1 in my two Yahoo leagues and in the money I play in where I co-manage a team with Mr. Fantasy; well we got crushed. Not the best of starts for me and unfortunately for me

I had Raheem Mostert on one of my Yahoo teams. Sadly Mostert went down with an injury that ended his season after just 2 carries for 20 yards. What makes replacing him more difficult is that this is a 20 team league and there aren’t any running backs out there that will get the bulk of the carries for their team. I’m just going to have to keep an eye on the waiver wire and hope that the running back I took later in the draft produces for me.

In non-fantasy football dealings I thought it was humorous that every team in the AFC and NFC West divisions won their games while every team in the NFC North lost their games. I don’t know how often that happens in Week 1, but I got a chuckle out of it.

So how did your first week of fantasy football go? Or just let me know your thoughts on Week 1 of the NFL season in general. Did something jump out at you that you liked or didn’t like? I’ll be interested to hear what you thought.

Now when he season started last Thursday Ronald Jones Jr. of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fumbled in the 2nd quarter of their game against the Dallas Cowboys ad that was it for him in that game. Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians benched Jones for the remained of that game. Well it doesn’t look like Arians is going to hold a grudge as he said that Jones will start in Tampa Bay’s game this week against the Atlanta Falcons.

Tampa Bay has a crowded backfield as Jones shares time with Leonard Fournette and Giovanni Bernard; so it’s a solid move by Arians to help Jones regain some confidence by naming him the starter. Just last Friday Arians said that Jones “struggled to regroup mentally after his mistake” and that’s why he went with Fournette and Bernard for the remainder of that game.

You do have to wonder if the Buccaneers would be going back to Jones as the starter if another running back had put up some numbers, but no one stepped up. Jones finished with 14 rushing yards on four carries. Fournette had 32 rushing yards on nine carries. Fournette also had five catches on seven targets for 27 yards while Bernard had two catches on three targets for 12 yards, both coming in the fourth quarter.

Do you like the move of Jones being named the starter? Or would you have liked to have seen Fournette being named the starter? I doubt Bernard was even considered as a starter as he’s always been looked at as a change of pace type of running back.

  1. I’m not at all surprised that Jones is getting the start for week #2.
We’ve seen this before with the Packers; a bad clunker or two before the eventually right the ship and win the division.
