The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won their second Super Bowl in franchise history on Sunday and they did it in dominant fashion as the beat the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9.
Now Tom Brady was named MVP of the Super Bowl, but did he really deserve to be? Brady went 21 of 29 for just 201 yards and he added three touchdowns. His quarterback rating was for the game was 81.8 and his Total Quarterback Rating for the game was 125.8. Brady put up solid numbers, but when you hold a team like Kansas City to just 9 points even though they where missing two starting offensive lineman someone from the Buccaneers defense should’ve been named MVP.
Patrick Mahomes was under pressure the entire game from that Buccaneers defense. If you’ve ever wondered what the term running for your life means just look at the tape of this game and watch Mahomes run. Somehow Tampa Bay only managed to sack Mahomes three times and that has to be attributed to Mahomes athletic ability. I’m sure will be seeing that throw Mahomes made while he was horizontal to the ground.
Ndamukong Suh had 1 1/2 of Tampa Bay’s three sacks, but didn’t contribute in stopping the run; so if not the teams sack leader who should’ve won the MVP on the Buccaneers defense? Well; how about Devin White? White was the Buccaneers leading tackler. He had 12 total tackles and 8 of them where solo tackles. He also had 2 tackles for loss and defended one pass along with getting an interception.
I don’t understand what the MVP voters where looking at except for the fact that they always seem to vote for the winning teams quarterback and in a lot of cases that’s the right choice, but in this game it wasn’t.
Actually Rob Gronkowski may have been a better choice for MVP then Brady. Gronkowski had 6 receptions for 67 yards and was the team leader in both of those categories. Gronkowski also caught 2 of the 3 touchdowns passes that Brady threw. I get that Gronkowski isn’t the poster boy that Brady is, but let’s face it he would’ve been a better choice.
Now as you know I had the Chiefs winning this game and I have to tell you I was very disappointed in their game plan. In general coming off of a week off Andy Reid’s teams play very well, but not this time. Reid and his offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy seemed to underestimate the Buccaneers pass rush and didn’t make the proper adjustments for having two of their starting offensive lineman being out injured. I guess Reid and Bienemy didn’t watch enough of the film from Tampa Bay’s game against the Green Bay Packers to understand that they could rush the passer against a quality offensive line; so imagine what they could do against an offensive line that missing two starters.
Now remember there was a lot of uproar when Bienemy wasn’t hiring for any of the coaching opening that where available this off season, but after this game you have to wonder if teams made the right choice by passing him up. It was easily the poorest performance from what has been described as “his” offense all even though Reid calls the plays.
I’m sure you can point out a lot of reasons that Kansas City didn’t win this game and I agree with you on that, but the first place I’m looking at is Reid and Bienemy. It was their responsibility to have this team ready to play and they sure didn’t look like they where ready to go.
Now I’m not saying Reid and his staff should be fired or anything like that. Kansas City is still a very good team and has already been put in place as the favorite to win next years Super Bowl. I just thought it was a very disappointing performance by Kansas City and even though I incorrectly predicted that they would win I would’ve settled for a good game and I didn’t get that either.
Oh well that’s it for this NFL season; so now we move on and get ready for the NFL draft. The draft will be virtual again and as it has been for the last few years will be done over a three day period of time. Round 1 is on April 23rd. Rounds 2 & 3 will be conducted on April 24th with Rounds 4 thru 7 being done on April 25th.

Maybe the Chiefs were overconfident. Although you bring up some good points about the Tampa defense, ask yourself one very important question; Would Tampa have won if another QB was at the helm instead of Brady??
