You have to wonder if professional wrestling is reaching its oversaturation point. As of right now there is 15 hours of professional wrestling available on television right now and soon there is going to be more added.
Right now, World Wrestling Entertainment airs three programs that cover seven hours of television time. WWE programming airs Monday, Tuesday and Fridays currently. All Elite Wrestling also airs three programs that cover five hours of television time. AEW’s programming airs on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Impact wresting or Total Non-Stop Action as they’re going back to using have one two hours television program that airs on Thursday night. Finally New Japan Pro Wrestling has an hour-long program that airs right after TNA’s show on Thursday night.
That’s quite a bit of wrestling and it’s on almost every night, but soon will also have the National Wrestling Alliance on television.
Last week it was announced that the NWA has agreed to a deal with the CW Network to air two wrestling based shows. Reports are that one of the shows will be a regular wrestling show with matches while the other show will be a reality based behind the scenes look at the NWA.
It hasn’t been announced what night either of these NWA shows will air or what names they might use. The NWA had a YouTube show called NWA Powerrr, but it’s unclear if that’s the name they’ll be using going forward.
The origin of the NWA dates back to around 1948, but since 2017 it’s been owned by Smashing Pumpkins lead singer Billy Corgan. In reality Corgan’s Lighting One Inc. is the official owner of the NWA.
The NWA features four men’s singles titles and two women’s singles titles. They also have two men’s tag team championship and one woman’s.
On the men’s side the NWA has a heavyweight title, a world television championship, a junior heavyweight championship and national heavyweight championship for singles titles. The women’s singles title are the World Championship and the Women’s Television Championship. Both the men and the woman have a World tag team champion while the men also have the United States tag team titles.
It’s unclear how many wrestling fans will know the wrestlers that wrestle in the NWA, but I’m sure there will be a few familiar faces. It’s also quite possible that with some new television money coming into the promotion that the NWA might sign some of the wrestlers that have been or might be let go by WWE or AEW.
So, if you’re watching wrestling on television right now, I’m interested to know what shows you’re watching. I don’t think that I know anyone who watches all 15 hours of wrestling that are currently available, but I’m sure there are people out there that do.
I’m also interested to know if you’ll be watching the NWA when their shows start to air on the CW Network. I will probably record the show and see if it’s anything that I’m interested in adding to my weekly wrestling viewing.
I always wonder why the fans tolerate today’s brand of wrestling so much. Most of the top matches are exactly the same; clotheslines, multiple near falls, a wrestler escaping a submission hold by crawling to the ropes causing a break, a stupid suicide dive over the top rope onto an opponent and whips into the ring barrier. Of course, if the match is super important, one of the wrestlers will be slammed onto the announcer’s table. And, of course, there will absolutely be no clean finish. It will be marred by distractions, outside interference etc.
One of the great heels of the 50’s was Hans Schmidt. (Guy LaRose) After he retired, one of the dirtsheets tracked him down when he was living in Quebec. They asked him what he thought of the current product. He laughed and laughed and then said something quite profound. ” I don’t know what you would call it, but it’s not wrestling! The new NWA show will be short lived and will draw a miniscule audience.
