This may be one of those issues were I’m the only one who has a problem with it, but it bothers me when the media anoints a team as the best after playing very few games. I had it happen again this week and I get that the media needs talking points, but you look stupid if you start pushing a team as the best in their league after just a few games.
We’re actually just starting Week 3 of the National Football League season, but after there 30 to 12 win over the New York Giants I head multiple media members pushing the San Francisco 49ers as the best team in the NFL.
With the win San Francisco improved to 3-0 on the season and the Giants fell to 1-2. So, San Francisco now has wins over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Los Angeles Rams and the afore mentioned Giants. There were people who saw the Steelers and Giants as possible playoff teams, but I don’t think anyone had either of those teams as a serious Super Bowl contender.
I get it a win is a win and you can only play who’s on your schedule and all that stuff, but maybe we could reserve judgement on who the best team in the NFL is until we get a little deeper into the season.
heading into the remainder of the games this weekend there are eight teams that are 2-0. Couldn’t it be possible that one of those teams is the best team in the NFL? Interestingly enough the Kansas City Chiefs aren’t one of those 2-0 teams, but Kansas City is expected to be a Super Bowl contender.
It’s all together possible that the 49ers end up representing the National Football Conference in the Super Bowl as they look like a very good team and should be considered a contender to make the Super Bowl, but there are other teams beside San Francisco that have also looked very good. Plus, in the NFL there always seems to be a team that no one talked about during the pre-season that has a much better year than expected.
This early in the season it’s almost impossible to point to one thing that the 49ers have that head and shoulders above what some of the other 2-0 teams have. San Francisco has a good running game with Christian McCaffery, but there are other teams with good running games. Brock Purdy has played well at quarterback, but again so have other quarterbacks. San Francisco has one of the better defenses in the NFL, but there are other teams with defenses that measure up to the 49ers.
Like I mentioned earlier when it’s all said and done San Francisco may end up being the best team in the NFL, but February 11th is a long way away and a lot of things will happen between now and then. I wouldn’t be surprised if between now and February 11th the media extolls three four or even five other teams as the best in the NFL.
The NFL schedule for Week 3 is very interesting as there doesn’t seem to be one game that jumps out at you.
I’ve heard some people who are very interested in the game between the Atlanta Falcons and the Detroit Lions. The Falcons are one of those eight 2-0 teams and there’s a lot of buzz about their rookie running back Bijan Robinson. I Week 1 Robinson put up big numbers as he rushed for 124 yards on 19 carries in the Falcons win against the Green Bay Packers. Last week Robinson didn’t get as many carries just 10, but still rushed for 56 yards as Atlanta beat the Carolina Panthers. Robinson is averaging 6.2 yards per carry and has added 11 receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown in his first two weeks in the NFL. The Lions aren’t looked at as a great defense, so it will be interesting to see what kind of numbers Robinson put up tomorrow.
I’d like to know what you think the best game of Week 3 is. Do you like the Sunday night match up which features the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Las Vegas Raiders? Maybe it’s the first Monday night game this week as the 2-0 Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the 2-0 Philadelphia Eagles. Let me know what if any Week 3 NFL match up catches your eye.
As always don’t forget to look for me on X, I’m at @Burketime.
The Tampa- Philadelphia game on Monday is shaping up to be a good one.
San Francisco has a very good team but it’s way too early to annoint them as the Super Bowl favorites.
